The figures will always be “adjusted” to suit the argument but I don’t think any Olympics has ever generated direct income in excess of the costs to mount it and run it.
And that’s the problem. It is all about money and prestige anmd politics, whereas it should be about clean competition between individual athletes, not nations. That’s why I have no time for it.

Well that’s an arguable benefit, anyway.;) But a basic census of who lives where on a particular date as a snapshot of the population is probably useful, but the raft of pointless and often intrusive questions is quite unnecessary.
