Thank you. Would you suggest dipping my toe in with the parody or with the more popular books? It is not a genre I know well but enjoy discovering new subjects and styles. Douglas Adams and Grant Naylor are about as far as I have got, and Red Dwarf was based on the TV series, I believe, not the other way round.

Indeed it is – that was a typo. Once I have satiated my current appetite for Wells, I will give him a go, as they say. I am very impressed by his attitude to his illness, to all sufferers from it and to his own death.

I read it and was , but googling revealed Terry Pratchitt, whom I have never read. Perhaps I should.

I recall a story Rory McGrath told some years ago on exactly this subject. He was making a call in the same way and resenting the probing questions and responded thus:

CC: Now I need you to answer some questions to identify yourself.

R McG: 36, overweight with stubble and a small ****.

CC: (Pause) I can’t believe that you said that Mr McGrath.

R McG: Ah, so you do know who I am then…..

Apologies if it’s not verbatim but it’s as close as memory will allow.

Although I haven’t been down there for several years I did always hanker after a ride but it never came to anything, such is the way of things. But I do hope someone has seen sense and that it will continue. Presumably the aircraft still have a reasonable life left in them – which is the more vulnerable – airframe or engine?
