Having never seen the Russky fighters “live” but having seen both Viggen and Phantom in the same environment you cannot help but make comparisons. An interesting thought that the Swedes might have bought the Phantom if they had not produced the Viggen – it had not occurred to me.

And that adds in a historical perspective as well.

I suggest that in some of those cases it is the other way round. Neither you nor I have any statistical evidence, but the bad things in life usually predominate where the media is concerned and good news is more often than not, no news.

Round our way there are the usual gangs of thugs, causing trouble and daubing graffiti and taking drugs. There are burglaries and car theft and the occasional mugging. So a fairly typical town. But what percentage are behaving like this? 5%, 10%, 20% even, although I doubt it. So definitely a minority.

For every bit of boorish behaviour in a supermarket, on the street or in a car park there are 100 people going about their business without fuss.

I am not saying there is not a problem. There is and our prescriptions for it have been debated at length elsewhere. I am just suggesting that the problem needs to be kept in perspective.

For the sake of objectivity may I add the following words to yours in heavy type?
