It was duplicated by “After the Battle” magazine in 1977, apparently.
Yes it was Eddie. ATB went to great lengths to get it just right, down to texture of the cover, the colours of ink used and facsimiles of the target photographs. It is indeed the volume which includes the Dams Raid. My own copy is very safely stored!

The episode will probably be around for a while as it’s on 4OD as well.

Blimey, I’ve got that on VHS somewhere! Must dig it out.
Had very fleeting visit in failing light to Mepal with 1Group, ironically on the way home from a weekend at REF’s! This thread reminds me I must order a set of plans for the place, make some enquiries as we promised ourselves a return visit. A quick recce seems that Mepal has quite a lot to offer in terms of history and physical remains, especially the dispersed sites.
If anyone knows of any local friendly potential contacts, drop me a PM! Also, we found the memorials and the village sign. IS there anything to commemorate the airfield and or its units in any of the local churches etc? Again, a PM would be most appreciated!
Shameless scrounge over! 😀

“The Hardest Day” is an outstanding book. My copy, which I’ve had (I think) since it was pretty much forst published still makes a journey from the bookshelf every now and then.
Pathfinder – that’s an excellent photo. I’ve dropped you a PM regarding it.

I would like to add my condolences.
A superb author who on many occasions, brought clarity to otherwise difficult research subjects. His contribution and reference works should not be underestimated.
A sad, sudden and shocking bit of news.

Be interesting to hear what Her Maj thinks – if anything :diablo:

Robbie – from what I understand, the USAF don’t allow on-base parking anyway. Which is why everyone has to make do with the surrounding fields!

Let’s not forget everyone, one of the driving forces behind Fred and Harold Panton and their acquisition of NX611 – it was their brother, Christopher. We were very privileged to be given access recently, by landowners at Skipton-on-Swale, to the tower, which itself is a memorial of sorts. There are two plaques on the outside to other aircrew and inside, the ground floor is littered with wreaths. Thankfully, the tower, whilst derelict, is in no way vandalised and may it remain that way. Apparently, the Pantons and family make the journey to Skipton to remember their brother each year on or about the anniversary of his loss.
This was xp706 two years ago at Aeroventure. Have been back a couple of times but the museum was closed – got the wrong opening times!

Didn’t Branson have something to do with building a replica of Cayley’s glider, and flew it, a few years ago?
Below are a couple of shots of the Mk.1 nose prior to restoration….
….as is obvious a lot of hard work just in the restoration of the nose , well done.
Good grief! That must have been an interesting driving experience 😮
Much better where it is now and nice to see it on Sunday. Very well done to all concerned!

Some of my efforts from yesterday up Derwent (well actually, and a friend of mine as well). Only really just had the time to quickly sort a few out. It was a stunning morning and real a privilege to be there.
Can’t compete with some of the lists already posted (but that’s not the point!) but the former airfield of Ashbourne in Derbyshire has Blenheim Road and Whitley Way.
It is now now known as (unsurprisingly) the Airfield Industrial Estate!

chuck1981 – “Chip ‘n’ Pin” is the very shortened term for the method of payment used by many in the UK these days. Your debit/credit card has a small chip embedded in it. You insert the card into a small machine at the counter then enter your PIN number. It was introduced as a supposed way of cutting down on fraud.
