imho, USN should license-build QE class (UK supplying powerplants) in lieu of future Ford class CVN probably costing over $10b per pop long term. Maybe could retain/mix 5 Nimitz, 1 Ford with 6 QE by 2025? USN should at least LEASE one of the QE, if nobody else knocked.

Wah! I missed this one when posted.

Can you imagine the uproar in US if the USN did this?! I type this as someone who has pointed out how much licence-built euro-designed kit the US has used. But buying capital ships from the UK?

Having said that (and being pretty clear in my mind that this will never happen) I like the idea. It might break the USN’s grip on biggest! most massive! best! mindset and it might even start USN and US shipbuilders start thinking about lower personing levels. If EMALs (or similar) could be integrated with the skijump it might even give the USMC the LPH/Strike Carrier they want.

Then the French, Koreans and Japanese all buy one or more and we have an allied forces common design. We cross deck, share extacs, have an economy of scale on spares, spiral upgrades across a larger virtual fleet.

Next step integrating CAAMM properly and allied land forces have the same SAM and it gets used on Visbys, Valours, Formidables, T125s, K130s, Albions, CVFs

Back in real land we all **** about making our own parochial, gold-plated, short run designs to do pretty much the same thing. Still at least that’s something which the UK can lead the world in, eh?

Because we like the Bennies ?

‘Stills’ please not ‘Bennies’ this IS the 21 Century after all

Your analysis however is spot on.

BTW Oil down south is nothing new. ’twas an open secret in HM armed forces decades ago.

Build 2, load them full of Lynx with Sea Skua and sit one in Red Sea and one in Mediterranean to wipe out FACs

Strange claim, the French had never the intention to hand that to the Nazis.

No they didn’t. And I wasn’t claiming that they did. But they did lose a number of their sailors when we sank their ships and unsurprisingly were pretty pissed off that their ally had killed their men.

This is fantastic news ^ and perfect timing too

French Navy showing the RN that they’ve forgiven us for sinking their ships to prevent the Nazis using them.

I like your concept but it’s butt Ugly!!! Can you not edit something along the lines of mine below

    Really?

I think it looks better than the others (esp. Venator and sad to say yours) even if still no beauty

    I’d like to see:
amidships 30mm much higher up for field of fire and protection from elements
all boats launched from stern to remove need for midships davits (I appreciate the element of all eggs in one basket but even so).
    fixed hangar
single layer of ISO containers and all handling below flight deck

Wars are not peacetime-budget voices, and should have never, never, never been financed from peacetime MOD budget.

I’ve read some of your previous ascersions (sp) of opinion as facts and shaken my head but ………. on this one I absolutely agree.

Does that mean the no ship-mounted radar can see anything on or close to the surface beyond its line-of-sight horizon? (How far would that be? 20nm?) So a ‘long-range’ radar on a ship only refers to the detection of high-flying aircraft?

    Pretty much.

Although those crafty ex-cons in the antipodes have had success with their OTH radars and there are constant rumours about the (ex) Red menace making great use of ducting even on their skimmer-mounted sets

I don’t think senior officers ever failed to point out what they needed to get the job done. Either publicly or privately, they always present their facts.

Gosh, Italian VSOs much be far more competent than British ones then 🙂

Interesting comment on the wireless t’other day by an ex senior special forces chappy along the lines of ‘one makes plans for the kit one has, if the plan calls for 30 helos and we only have 10 then we need a new plan

Politicians then regularly ignore the warnings.

That they do, and the ones which they don’t actively ignore they quite possibly do not understand.

I cannot see why many people believe the Mk8 is the right gun for a future platform, often saying that it’s existing support structure means it would be stupid to change weapons.

I don’ think that anyone has said that this will be stupid.

And some good arguments have been for a small-medium calibre weapon. But putting aside capability arguments the reality of MoD procurement in the short to medium term is that

    a) if MoD PE offer a choice between buying new weather protected 30mm mounts or reusing Mk8s Treasury will probably allow reusing Mk8s
    b) if MoD PE offer a choice of buying new weather protected 30mm mounts or new 57mm or 67mm mounts MoD PE will be told to buy new 30mm

I’m happy to speculate as well.

If B and C models are cancelled HMG will jump with joy, shout ‘breach(sp) of contract‘ and cancel JCA altogether.

FAA MIGHT be allowed to keep what’s left of Joint Force Harrier or RAF might have to have a token number to act as a figleaf (no STOVL JCA means it doesn’t meet the requirement, see?)

RAF MIGHT be allowed to keep all of their EFs (and if they’re really lucky they might even get some Tranche IIIbs or some of the Luftwaffe’s ‘excess’ airframes), luckily some new simulations will show that EF is sufficiently stealthy and STOL performance will be good enough for future operations anyway

    Royal Navy.

Navy to reduce to smallest size ever to save carriers

At least they refer to submersibles as boats not ‘subs’

Other than that conjecture after conjecture (reminds me of Humphrey Littletons comments about his Radio show being interrupted so that a newsflash could be made letting the public know that a meeting between the PM and a President was still going on)

Is it me or does the Venator seem less “stealthy” than say a Holland class or the BAM class

Venator is ugly and sin and in my view a very inefficient design. However for C2 and C3 roles lack of stealth don’t worry me none.

C2 and C3 on same hull seems the way to go for me. Which is full circle amusingly.

As Jonesy has stated cheapness, efficiency, endurance and simplicity are the things what we need for both vessels. Additionally we get the buy in bulk economies of scale for lots of components AND have at least two versions for potential export.

I’m wary about ‘just’ adopting Oto 76mm or Bofors 57mm. That means ‘just’ putting in place a whole new supply, operation, maintenance train.

If C2 and C3 are effectively our second string then putting our Mk8s on them seems like a sensible reuse (and cheaper than buying something new). If and when AS90 marinisation actually happens then first string ships can get that first and C2 and C3 as mk8 ammo runs out and bean counters agree that conversion is more economical than keeping the old mounts running.

Of course our allies and potential customers will have different mounts to reuse so going German or Danish route and making each position modular increases potential sales as well as giving RN more options (at the moment RN are going to want CAAMM, STWS, Mk8, GAshMBO but that might change, their lordships might even recognise that softkill is a good idea). Doing this modular approach now is much cheaper than further down the line (after we’ve already lost potential sales) just look at time and cost of making B1bs more flexible.

II’ve even read that the fines for speeding in Finland are based on income – now there’s taking social equality to the point of near insanity.

    What?! Why?!

If one accepts the need for speeding fines (not everybody does of course) then its either to garner revenue (in which case means testing is likely to push the money gathered up rather than being a lovely liberal sop to let poorer people pay less) or as a DETERRENT TO EXCESS SPEED. If a deterrent it has surely go to deter. No? As such it seems to make sense that someone with pots of cash is deterred rather than merely facing a minor inconvenience.
