[updated:LAST EDITED ON 04-03-02 AT 12:41 PM (GMT)]Dezz…thanks for posting this…my letters are ready…I hope we are not too late…when my parents visited Hawkinge last Autumn, the builders were already JUST 6 FEET from the perimeter fence…I simply cannot believe that this is happening…Hawkinge is one of the best (if not the best) memorials to the Battle of Britain…and it is being destroyed before our eyes…

The trouble is…the government no longer has men who fought in the Second World War…it’s just something that happened sixty years ago to them…they don’t care about preserving the memories of those who fought…they disgust me…

I’m 22 years old…and unlike a lot (but not all) people my age I have “real” heroes…not people like David Beckham and Posh, but the likes of Guy Gibson, Leonard Cheshire, Hugh Verity, Yvonne Cormeau, Barnes Wallis…I respect their contributions and their memories…shame the powers that be don’t feel the same way…

RE: Oh go home the lot of you!!!

Futurshox…tell me about it…my first job at Duxford was as a museum assistant and I had to work 2 weekends out of 3, including all airshows…I spent the September Airshow “guarding” the entrance to the Gold Pass and Hospitality Enclosures and couldn’t see a thing…everytime the Lanc did a pass I was peering under the marquee to catch a glimpse (if any of you came through those enclosures that weekend, I was the one in the Spitfire earings ;))…The October airshow was even better (not)…I spent 13 hours cleaning toilets and changing loo rolls..whoo hoo…the only flying I saw was the Breitling Fighters finale and that was because I refused point blank to change another b***** loo roll until I’d seen them 😉 😉 ;)…but that’s one of the down sides of being a museum assistant I’m afraid…I did gain a lot from the experience, and I got to know a lot of people in the museum, useful people if you get my drift…people in the know 😉

Steve…yes you are right…the south side of Hanger 4 is the Battle of Britain Exhibition, the south side is the Air Defence of Britain 🙂

Sadsack…no, I don’t think they did…it would have been a fantastic sight to see 4 Lysanders parked together 😉

Sadly, I don’t think some museums, Duxford included, give the Lysander enough recognition…personally had I been in charge of re-ordering Hanger 4 when they did the Battle of Britain exhibition, I would have put the Lysander in that exhibition as it took part in the Battle of France…which in turn paved the way for the Battle of Britain…I would have put the Meteor in the other half of Hanger 4 which is designated “The Air Defence of Britain”…the Meteor as we all well know being the first British jet to enter service with the RAF…

    When I’m Director of Duxford…we’ll see…~grins~ 😉 😉 😉

Sorry to be picky Steve but…in 1998, the Lizzy then operated by the ARCO (now resident with Kermit Weeks in Florida), the Shuttleworth Lizzy, and the Sabena Old Timers Lizzy all took to the skies together at Duxford…

You are right though in that the Lizzy in the middle of the three in the picture is the IWM’s static example…you would have thought that I’d recognise one of “my” planes wouldn’t you? 😉

    RE: 60th Anniversary?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 25-02-02 AT 09:16 PM (GMT)]I am no longer a museum assistant at Duxford, having moved “over the road” to work for the Film and Video Archive instead…this means I no longer get to polish the aircraft…something I miss very much :(…

Hopefully no one else from Duxford comes here often so I’ll tell you all a little story…one day last summer, I was on cleaning duties for the day and was put in charge of cleaning the aircraft in Hanger 1…now the Blackbird had not long been at Duxford so I hadn’t cleaned her before…I wasn’t quite sure whether I was supposed to or not so I checked the list of aircraft to be cleaned, and yes, she was on the list…so I picked up my big fluffy aircraft duster and started dusting away…

What I wasn’t bargaining for was that the surface of the Blackbird on her nose (which was too high up for me to see the top of) is slightly rough…a bit like sandpaper…and very attractive to big fluffy sticks…

Yes…you’ve guessed it…I had created the first fluffy SR-71…a cross between a mean fighting machine and an angora jumper…

Needless to say, Ashley the Spitfire polisher nearly wet her pants on the spot…

Fortunately the fluff came off quite easily and there was no harm done…but I’ve not been near her since…~squeaks~
