My grandfather trained as a “tail end Charlie” (rear gunner) in Lancasters but was invalided out with TB before seeing active service…

My great-uncle was RAF groundcrew – one of his roles was to collect together the belongings of aircrew who did not return and return them to their families, often in person. To return to a mother or a wife the few possessions that her son/husband owned, such as a watch, washing items, books etc was very hard for my uncle to do, for he was a gentle kind natured soul, who could hardly bare the pain and anguish so obviously suffered by those who had lost their loved ones…some of whom had been his friends too…

Not family, but a neighbour, Alec, served in the RAF as a mid-upper gunner in “Old Fred” (the cockpit section of which can be found on display at IWM Lambeth) He flew 21 missions in this aircraft and shot down a ME110.

~Bumping this back to the top~

Hope you get your car problems sorted Kev, I would really hate for you to miss the get-together 🙁

If anyone has any items for the raffle, please please bring them along…aviation items…prints…bottles of wine…chocolates…etc etc…all to a worthy cause – the Mark Hanna Research Fellowship.

Look forward to seeing folks on Sunday

As Alexis has already mentioned, the proceeds from next Sunday’s raffle at the get-together will be going to the charity Janie has posted details of.

I never actually spoke to Mark but saw him many times at Duxford…the last time I saw him, he was just walking out of the OFMC building towards the Control Tower…he turned as he exited the building and flashed me that brilliant smile of his…and that’s the picture of Mark that stays in my head.

Of course the loss that mere enthusiasts like myself felt cannot compare to the loss felt by Mark’s friends and family…but I hope that his family and friends can take some comfort in that he was so highly thought of by so many.

Well I’m female…although I don’t make a big thing about it here…I’m female and I like aircraft…so what? It was funny a while back when I discovered that there were a couple of members here who had spent several months thinking I was male 😀

Just confirming that the meet is still on as planned, if anyone has anything to contribute to the raffle, please bring it along on the day.

Macky42…yes, it is the feature film version of Dambusters, hope that’s ok! 🙂

To cover the projectionists’ expenses, I would appreciate a contribution of £3 from each of you – this will include a strip of five raffle tickets. Extra tickets will of course be available (and their purchase actively encouraged!) 50p for 1 strip, 3 strips for £1. I would like to donate all proceeds from raffle and all money left over after covering the projectionists’ expenses to the Mark Hanna Research Fellowship (I hope no one objects to this)

I am on holiday from tomorrow so if anyone has any questions, please message me here, or e-mail me at rharding@iwm.org.uk . I will be back on the 29th and will get back to you then.

Have fun and play nicely now!

Again, my good friend Kev has put me to shame…here I was thinking what aircraft I would buy myself – me me me! And there’s Kev’s wonderful suggestion of squadron reunions 🙂

Thank you Kev, for reminding me of the great debt I owe to these brave men (and women).

P.S. Can we make it £2million – Reunions AND a personal Spit for me to polish :p

My husband and I were wetting ourselves at this guy…it was really something different and enjoyable to see…the look on his face as he whizzed past just made it for me – he looked so happy to be there “flying” his “aircraft”.

The geese too I loved…although as Kev said, after several long straight passes, one was having visions of these birds squawking to each other “jeez…another pass down the flight line…when are we actually going to get going and fly somewhere?” :p Thanks Kev, that really made me chuckle 🙂

The 747 didn’t seem to fly as low yesterday as it did on Thursday, but was still excellent.

My other highlights were: the “100” shaped Balbo…the Meteor…Canberra…Avenger…and the Hunter…first Hunter display I’ve seen in a while…

My lowlights…not enough of the Venom…£5 for a programme??? You must be joking…quality of stalls was nothing like it used to be a couple of years back…if I want to buy a handbag, I’ll go to a clothes/bag/accessories shop for one…although that said, the stall did have a nifty Red Arrows shaped backpack…
