The planes are already on the air with assigned killboxes, and those kill boxes are hugely bigger than a 60 km´s circle…

Not true, speak to people on the ground out there and watch tv programs that show Harriers scrambling that are specifically for CAS! Sometimes troops have to wait half an hour for support!
To say there is always something overhead and loaded with weapons just waiting to strike in support of the troops is complete and utter rubbish and completely untrue.

Does anone else find this slightly suspect:

“The maximum speed I achieved on the jet plane without a canopy glass was around two times greater than speed of sound.”

They also have a squadron of Tornado GR.4’s so they obviously think they are useful and needed.

But how much more expensive is that to operate, a fair old bit I bet, each jet takes longer to get airborne let alone to the target area then any GMLRS shot by a huge margin.
It’s highly accurate hence it being known as the 60km sniper. Troops on the ground don’t care what delivers the hurt to the enemy be it aircraft or the big guns, they just want it there in a hurry and in a highly accurate manner and this is where GMLRS and other systems like it excell over aircraft.
Also with a GMLRS system you also put less personel at risk, that is the pilots risk which is always a factor and lose the pilot and you lose the plane, see the Tornado and F-15 going down recently as an example, GMLRS should have zero losses if deployed correctly.

And by the way, have you ever considered the kind of problems that using a 25 ton tracked MLRS launcher brings in one of the most mountainous country in the entire planet?

The GMLRS is a very fine system, but it´s a niche capability, it´s not even comparable to airpower.

    Cheers

Well whatever you may think about it the military disagree as they have GMLRS out in Afghan at the moment. They think it is usefull and needed.

Far less fast jets? do you even realise how many squadrons we’ve lost in the last 15 years? 7 full squadrons of tiffys (no looking more like 6) is not a lot, and if we ditch all our fast jets what exactly is going to provide air support to troops on the ground?

From my point of view fast jets are simply to expensive and not always the best system for the job (I know, thats heresy on an aviation forum!).

Systems like GMLRS (far cheaper then a Typhoon) can be a damn good substitute for CAS aircraft. Obviously there are differences and yes it’d still be nice to have some fast jets for delivering 2000lb bombs and also there’s the problem that GMLRS would have its own logistics footprint/trail but I’m betting that’d still be far cheaper then a fighter jets running costs.
I imagine you are familier with GMLRS but for those who aren’t here’s a run down on it:

Also, any “air cover” the Patriot will have will be irrelevant for further discussion due to Flanker doctrine of covering the Fencer.

Ok this is getting silly but if we’re going down that road than lets deal with the Flanker escorts with some F-22s which changes the outcome again.
Really though to be sensible about it there’s no point dragging every system going into the debate because it’s complicated enough as it is.
Perhaps try and work through the original scenario which was a single Su-24 with Kh-58’s against a Patriot system before throwing a load of extra goodies into the equation.

I’m amazing at how compact it is in the plan view drawing talltower posted especially in regards to its length.

    He’s dead.

Most private medical insurers are reluctant to accept the deceased as new customers. 😎

Oh well thats handy, less of my families taxes being wasted.
(though I should have read the thread and article before ranting but I stand by my rant)

Yet overseas aid frequently involves the armed forces, both in responding to disasters and development projects (eg working parties from ships visiting developing nations).

    Crazy!

I agree, our armed forces of all branches are all to often being used as glorified social workers/project managers in like you say disaster areas and developing nations. This must take a huge bite out of the budget and personel available for actually doing the job the armed services are ment to do; fight wars and keep our nation secure which as it happens we seem to be doing a rather half measure job at the moment (which is not the troops fault but governments I might add before i’m flamed to hell)
I tryed a google search to get some info on just how much is wasted (my opinion) on these projects and how many personel and their associated equipment (eg helo’s and transport aircraft) but my search was fruitless.

I think we need far less fast jets as well (Typhoons). Perhaps half what wer propose to operate in the future as they don’t seem to usefull and priorities ly elsewhere for the forseeable future.

I am amazed NASA cant find time in its schedule to point Hubble at the moon and take some detailed photos of the landing sites to shut people up once and for all.

Theres no way it’s gonna shut any of the fools up, it’ll only drive them futher into madness.

Its his own fault for being a Alcoholic.
I want to know were he got the money for the drink from?
    Was it :-
    (A) being a tea leaf
    (B) his parents
    (C) the long suffering British tax payer (who also had to foot the bill for the hospital fees).

    (C) Undoubtably (I’m sick of footing the bill for losers in this country and abroad)
He should be removed from the NHS database and be forced to go private, that way he can foot the bill himself. If he can’t afford it tough. People like him are the bane of society and our government encourages them as there is no sense of personal responsibility and never will be when they are bailed out at every corner by the state.

If China decided it’s time to sell back the government bonds they own, US would not have enough money for fuel to reach Taiwan strait, let alone fight a lengthy conflict. The times where US have held all the trumphs are gone.
