thanks guys,
WOW !! I consider myself well and truly told regarding the tragic demise of Baby Gorilla and its owner !!
If you care to read my post properly, you will notice use of the word might , ( may , possible to, or possibly ) and NOT would not.
I do not mind being corrected if i got it wrong, but i only expressed my opinion.
Obviously i’m amongst experts who know it all !! 😉
By the way ,accidents usually have an unpredictable outcome,so to say that Morgan would NOT have survived with or without the crash pylon sounds to me like someone decided that that was going be the outcome whatever might (or may) ;-)) have happened.

Just browsed through the panama jacks iraqi fury pics,
have to say its not my personal favourite livery but i did enjoy the ofmc fury in that livery(something different and eye catching), the panama jacks Fury looks absolutely glorious – i hope someone can post some pics of it on this forum when it flies.
As for the armour plate ,is it removed to allow a jump seat to be fitted?
I seem to remember the late Paul Morgan’s Fury had the armour plate removed, can’t help but feel that the outcome of that accident might have been different if the armour had been fitted,Morgan and WH588 as with so many other pilots/owners & aircraft are very much missed.

Have you seen the ‘Warbird Tech ‘ series books?
Volume 37 Hawker Sea Fury by Kev Darling is very good ,it has in its 105 pages the following:
Quote:
In depth developement history
Extensive technical diagrams
Full technical Description
War performance in Korea
Reno Air Racers
Full service history
It also has some nice colour photo’s which i hadn’t seen in print before.
I bought my copy from a bookstall at DX,but Midland Publishing at http://www.midlandcountiessuperstore.com my be able to supply,as they are U.K. distributors.
Hope this is of use,
Steve
A few more of my own thoughts:
Cant see the need for pyros myself,i think the show is fine without, and i wouldn’t mind betting they cost a fortune.
Those of you who have seen the Legends 2003 DVD will recall the DX fire crew attending the warning flare fired to warn the Guvnor of his aircrafts undercarriage problem, which had caused the grass to start smouldering where it had landed.
I think that says it all as far as pyros are concerned.
I also think it would be good if all those ‘flightline police’ in their flourescent jackets were removed to the taxiway , getting one of those people to move so photo’s can be taken is virtually impossible,in my experience that is the one complaint i have overheard most people have on the flightline walk. It seems to me that the flightline police think they are special, and are not prepared to move for anyone irrespective of how nicely they are asked.I realise that some of these people may be ground crew, but I’m sure they could keep an eye on people from the taxiway.

Hi James
Was this aimed at Me?,
if so can you enlighten Me as to what you are getting at please?

I agree, that music is appalling and I for one much prefer the sounds of the various engines in massed formations,………..its what the audience is there for isn’t it?? sight and sounds.
I wrote to the show organisers many years ago regarding the music and that nasty little train that used to get in everyones view just at the wrong time.
They replied that the music was important to the show and would not change it,nor would they stop the empty train rattling back and forth – not even during the show!!,but I have not seen it for many years now,……..their idea’s are obviously open to change if there is enough pressure brought to bear.
I think the commentators do a great job and really wish they would present and commentate on the Legends video’s/DVD’s instead of messr’s Bowd and Maffett who I personally think do these presentations no favours at all.

I think it is a shame that such a magnificent aircraft should be hiding in a hangar somewhere, especially after john spent so much money on it prior to importing it.
(Can’t be doing that Centaurus any good)
I seem to recall it only visited Legends once, and it would be a great replacement for the very much missed Baby Gorilla, which sadly had such a short display career in England.Have to say though, I’m not sure about the markings.

I think we all may be a little ungrateful at times about the line up
or missing aircraft, but the bottom line is that there are only so many available types and their locations or construction may make it too costly to bring them to Duxford.
Secondly, have you noticed how many people travel from all over the world just to see the “Legends” show ? can’t be that bad!!!!
I remember the Fighter Meet in 1984 ,only the two Spitfires ML417,and MH434 ,but the audience was spellbound when they took off together, so its not all always about ‘how many’.
I don’t know if Stephen Grey still lives in Switzerland, but I think we should be grateful that He chooses to operate them from Duxford, after all it would be a nuisance if we all had to go to Geneva to see them, (makes them all so much more accessible for most of us ).

My experiences of the Firefly over the years also provided a conclusion that this was an aircraft bordering on underpowered.
It always seemed to need so much runway to get airborne, and airspeed was always critical in such a heavy aircraft.(makes me wonder how they ever operated from carriers!!) although my own amateur video shows that properly executed manouvers were not a problem, although personally I’d never seen it perform derry turns, loops or rolls.
I was quite concerned at the airspeed and the amount of altitude lost in the first derry turn, but thankfully for me ,I was watching the breitlings getting airborne when it all went tragically wrong.
This prompted me to look at old footage that I had which also showed the aircraft not performing fancy manouvers.
Not being a pilot I suppose I’m not qualified to comment really, but I sometimes wonder why pilots trusted with almost irreplaceable aircraft repeat manouvers that they only just got away with previously,e.g….P.38,P63,Firefly all destroyed by apparently expert pilots with judgement second to none and that all important service training.
Already posted my favourite books,
But I reckon another favourite in most peoples collections if it was written would be an auto bioghraphy by Ray Hanna or Stephen Grey,I reckon they’ve both got enough flying experiences under their respective belts to fill a substantial book each!!

Biggin Hill video
The video is copying ever as I write this
Made a point of watching again the Hanna/MH434 display and I think those of you who watch it will agree that although the straight and level is low, when the aerobatic manoevers are carried out there is always plenty of height and speed involved which prevents any chance of the aircraft stalling and/or dropping out of manoevers. You may also note that MH434 is always gaining altitude rather than maintaining or losing it when entering a manoever!!. Lets also consider that in the event of a aircraft/engine failure the priority would be to avoid any loss of life, but IF and only IF there is pilot error then who knows what may happen.
What do you think??

RE : Biggin Hill Air Fair video

Here are my favourites
The Flight of the MEW GULL Alex Henshaw
Truly gripping ,if you haven’t read it get a copy, no wonder the record still stands !
Airborne – Neil Williams
Late great display pilot, never tire of reading it.
WINGS ON MY SLEEVE – Captain Eric ‘Winkle’ Brown CBE.DSC.AFC.RN
Test Pilot whose experiences must be almost unequalled !
Battle of Britain: The Movie Robert J Rudhall
A great book about my favourite film, and better than that,I managed to get the last of 100 Authors Proofs signed by
Robert (sadly missed),and Leading names from the film,Ron Goodwin,Mike Vickers,John Blake, and Pilots,Fitters ,and Armourers who fought in the battle(1940),Lady Bader, and lastly but by no means least Sqn Ldr Paul Day.
Goes without saying my most prized book!
Have any of you ever seen a recording of the Biggin Hill Air Fair 1982 as televised back then?
There are some great performers on this recording including many that are sadly no longer with us,but the reason I have posted this is to comment on the Hanna/MH434 performance.
The aircraft was still in the Sir Adrian Swire livery at this time and was the last Biggin Hill performance before MH434 was sold to OFMC.
This is a display the like of which I haven’t seen for many years, for instance imagine MH434 being banked round the trees on knife edge with only one wing visible above the trees, and the flying full length of runway with less than diameter of prop beneath the aircraft, – can’t get lower without landing!!
Wondered if anyone wanted to see it,I could run a copy so as to protect my copy ,and it could be passed round in similar fashion to the camera.
By the way you could also see the 83 show as well.
RE ; Legends DVD
Thanks for the info,
I’ll order one from airshows.tv
nice gesture to donate profits,i’ll support that.
thanks again Steve 964
