I apologise if this has been aired before but what happened to the Harriers that went to Thailand. According to an Ozzie mate (who inhabits this forum from time to time), they were flown a bit, found too tricky and were consigned to the back of a hangar. Any updates?
301Squadron of the Thai Navy still fly AV8S & TAV8S aircraft – still in gorgous light grey/white with hi-viz markings (similar to the pics of G-VTOL)
Got some images of G-VTOL in the “desert” scheme somewhere. Has anyone got pics in the short lived private demonstrator scheme??
When I look at WP964, I think it’s a shame that people can mess up a nice chipmunk like that. Can’t they buy some cheap silly modern kitt and built some new plane.
So you might guess that I don’t like this modification. 😉
J.V.
Those “people” were the Army Air Corps who used this one off chippy to train IIRC forward air controllers and needed a more combat – looking machine rather than a bright red and white trainer. Much rather have this official scheme than the Red Bull sea vixen
😀 Chippies are hardly rare and not particularly historic,
QUOTE]
Not historic!? Chippy first flew in December 1946, thats like saying the DC6, Bell X1, Westland Wyvern etc are’nt “historic” -they all flew in 1946!
Finningley Battle of Britain at home day, 20 September 1980 – The show was also to feature a White Horse Whiskey aerobatic competition and the Queens Cup Air race. The race was flown the next day, won by a Cessna 180, second was Den Penrose’s Arrow Active!!

Thought this thread might have been about the two Chipmunks at Gatow, Berlin in the 60s. 😉
,70s & 80s. One now with the bbmf
Spose the other Chippy warbird could be the “spitmunk” – a standard T10 in AAC camo that the BFWF had in the mid 70s -early 80s.
with one aircraft from every RAF squadron on show.
Apart from a certain very secret Nimrod equipped “reconnaissance” squadron and the TWUs shadow units – 63, 79 & 234!
Great day – easily one of my more notable aviation memories. Anyone remember that great idiot of a defence secretary (was it Mulley or something??) falling asleep next to the Queen during the fabulous flying display?? BBC TV had it well televised – is it possible that the BBC (and other networks) still have this and other air show programmes in their records?? I recall every Farnborough receiving large amounts of TV coverage – be great to see them again!!
REMEMBER IT WELL!!!
Probably the only show I’ve been to where pretty much nothing flew due to the November like conditions. Weather was only slighly better at Coltishall’s show the same day but a lot of participants were weather locked in Yorkshire including the BBMF. Great to see, I must get some of mine out.
Great flying display was lined up – back in the days when the only foreign participant was the Jordanian Falcons and only a couple of warbirds were needed for a great show due to the awesome RAF presence.
The thing is although the Vixen is a inportant part of British history its not a Aircraft which flew to save our country like the Lanc,Spit and Hurricane did and to put any logo on Types that so many people died fighting for us in would just be a crime.
Mmmm… I would hope that the many men of the FAA who flew these beasts from carriers all over the world will take umbridge at that comment. OK the vixen never saw combat but it was designed to do the same job that lancs, spits, hurris etc etc did and everyone involved with them was trained to do it. Just becasue they were’nt called up to “save our country” we shouldnt think of them as any less important than the rest. I believe that any warbird (or potential warbird) should have (and I’ll use the word again even for an inanimate object) dignity, if not for the machine then for the designers, engineers, crews who spent their lives working and dying with them.
The post was titled “Red bull sea vixen – how do you feel now” – I feel the same – I hate it but to some of you that means a barrage of abuse because God forbid, I feel differently to most of you. As someone said, long live free speech!?
My bottom line is – if its a unique example of a machine then keep it in an accurate scheme for the benefit of those who didnt see them when they were in service. If there are several examples around then use one of them as an advertising board, as long as there are some accurate ones also.
If aeroplanes are mere “nuts ‘n bolts” and bent pieces of metal why are we all here – why do we all refer to them as “she” and why do we all proudly display our photographs, anecdotes, stories of these “mere” flying objects. We all get pretty passionate about them in some shape or form and because of this, I’m here to say I would much prefer to see the original colours.I think it looks crap and as you said – it was designed to unfortunatley kill people, not be paraded around like a tacky advertising board – thats the job of Pitts Specials, Extras, Zlins etc etc.
Thanks for clearing that up about the availability of paint – as I said its just what I had heard.
The Graffitti Hunter is an accurate representation of an actual service Hunter that was painted by Fliegerstaffel 20 in IIRC 1995 – so thats fine!
As for G-FIRE, G-HUNT, G-BOOM,G-FURY, G-PROV etc – all awful
The thing about JPs, chippys, utterly butterly stearmans, hunters, even spitfires etc is that there are quite a few left still in authentic paint schemes so a few odd ball civvy liveries can be acceptable. The cvix is unique – some would say its even more unique now in that awful scheme, but not me. Return its dignity please!
Does Gazza Numan still fly?? Been years since I’ve seen him at a show – had heard he had given up following the loss of close friend??
bring back the SEAC display team with Harvards, “zero” and C45 – hilarious commentary and ricochet (correct spelling!?) gun sound effects.
What on earth are you doing starting a thread at nearly 1am in the morning!!??
I hate it, dispise it, loath it, worse thing ever – Red Bull could have sponsored this machine without the paint job IMHO, after all their Corsair looks nearly OK.
http://www.airsceneuk.org.uk/airshow03/zeltweg/06.htm
However, if they do intend to return it to its original scheme and bring back the proud honour of a former war machine and the FAA and not some cheap tacky show-biz act, then isnt there a problem? I did hear that 899sqn had intended to repaint its 25 anniv display sea harrier in extra dark sea grey/ white to look like Shars when they first entered service. But it would appear that no-one can source E.D.S.G. hence it being repainted blue, similar to the “Admiral’s barge” scheme. Any truth in this? If so then its buggered .
Should have left it in the drone scheme – just how eyecatching was that!?
4FTS 4FTS 4FTS 4FTS 4FTS 4FTS 4FTS 4FTS 4FTS 4FTS 4FTS 4FTS 4FTS 4FTS 4FTS 4FTS 4FTS 4FTS 4FTS 4FTS 4FTS………….
Did I mention I think it should be in mid 70s 4FTS colours??
What a great companion to the Gnat
Not a fan of display team schemes. Or how about the one off T12 green n white!?
Who attended this Air Show and which are your impressions ?
I did and I do a reasonable Clint Eastwood and Sean Connery.
They were hardly likely to be flying over South Wales yesterday, though!
Why not?? Lyneham’s hercs are frequently out and
about at weekends – a 24/7 force. Sometimes in huge numbers – Ive seen up to 13 on low level missions on a Sat or Sun.
