Great stuff! Okay then, whats the first a/c to arrive??
HP Victor masquerades as a supersonic jetliner in the “Iron Maiden”
Very enjoyable viewing. As has been touched on earlier, it was most refreshing to see the modern day equivalent Typhoons being scrambled, interwoven with the BoB footage, very nicely done. With the pathetic antics of the political and banking buffoons over the last few decades, the RAF is now fighting it’s own BoB and anything that underlines the need for the service gets my huge vote.:D
Thanks all, will have to get round to editing some more leg ends…:)
Its been stated elsewhere that most of the display acts turn up at RIAT for free, save fuel for the trip home and messing for the crews. The only acts RIAT pay for are civvy – so certainly the Vulcan this year and the pointless outing for the Sea Vixen.
So, I’m with chox – RIAT should re-invest some of those earnings back into the aircraft participation and actively seek the Russians or other “hard up” countries to attend to try and return it to its former, superb glory…
As a day out for the great unwashed of Lincolnshire with nothing else to do – great. As a major international military air show showcasing the RAF in the air as it is, after all the RAF’s premier event…….
If you wanted modern military hardware aplenty as befitting such an event, you had to go to Belgium for it.
Any reason for the huge G- markings on the Saudi one? spoils an otherwise superb looking machine…
Well I’m with Chox on this. Waddington is the RAF’s premier, showcase event and is currently featuring a very poor (enthusiasts) display line up. Sure the public crammed themselves (or not!) into Cosford last weekend and Waddo last year but as Chox has said, mainly to see the Vulcan. They should be cramming themselves in to see the RAF presented to them in a dynamic, engaging all noise and action fashion, not to watch a 50 year old jet warbird! What happens when the Vulcan has been seen for a few years on the circuit – will the interest still be there??
And as for the “there are’nt any aeroplanes to invite”…well…just look at our French, Belgian, Dutch and even Austrian and Polish equivalent display line ups…
The Bulldog Aerobatic Team (actually a duo) were formed for the 1974 season and were active until IIRC 1979. They effectively replaced the Chipmunk equipped “Blue Chips” duo that disbanded in 1973. As 2FTS was joint RAF/RN, an instructor from both dark and light blues formed the team. Their first public display was the Exeter & Greenham RAFA events 6-7 July.
Well as I say, it’s more a case of radical thinking. I don’t think chopping a couple of days out of one week’s flying and shifting it to a weekend is much to ask of personnel at all, especially when it would save a lot of work for personnel who would normally have to give-up a weekend to deal with an air show. As I said, the Navy manages to go off on leave when it suits them so I don’t see why the RAF couldn’t be as flexible – we’re only talking about one week a year maybe. So what if flying is scrubbed for a couple of days and moved? No big deal once a year.
As for the value of the training, I don’t see how that adds up. Surely, if all RAF flying was simply shifted to a weekend then the same flying would be taking place – including trade – that would otherwise have taken place during the week.
In essence, something along the lines I suggested would be far less disruptive to RAF operations than even a normal air show. Granted, it would still require personnel to oversee the public side of the event, but compared to a normal air show it certainly requires less time and cost for pre-rehearsed air display sequences. In essence it would be rather like arranging a Tactical Fighter Meet or a Joint Warrior – something like that, at a base where the public can have their show site on the other side of the runway. No air display flying (well maybe you could slip-in the BBMF and Reds at the end of the day!), just aircraft going about their business, and a few requests for aircraft to fly through or do a roller/overshoot or flyby. The result is a flying schedule which would have been taking place in any case, the only difference being that the public is there to see it. For the enthusiast the result is a much more interesting display than any show organiser could hope to stage these days.
All it requires is that shift of attitude to grasp the notion of block-movement of flying, and the concept of combining regular activities with public scrutiny. Absolutely no reason why it couldn’t be done and we’d all be a lot better off, RAF, public and enthusiasts alike. It’s just the problem of convincing conservative thinkers that just can’t imagine doing anything differently, methinks.
I get the idea, and never knock new thinking but I’m sure most punters would want to see quite a few solo/multi dislays of a/c being wrung out rather than just t/os & landings. Of course they scrubbed the best crowd pleaser and new way of thinking this year that was an absolute success – the RAF role demo….

I sat in ‘924’s “coal hole” at Llanbedr in 90/91 and the above description is fairly accurate. Unfortunately couldn’t take pics in the hangars but grabbed “the other” D3, XS577 that had been put out to grass..
Note she has a red nose (topical today eh – I don’t just throw this stuff together!)compared to ‘924’s yellow one.

Surely this is THE scheme though…

Spey Phantoms, yum yum yum…
