I’m not sure exactly what the slope is, can’t find it published anywhere, however the other factor is that there is a large haystack at the end of the runway which is already very short. On this landing seeing as there was another Mustang and a Yak 11 very close behind Maurice was using the brakes so as to get off and stopped at the within around 500m at the taxyway to the parking area hence why the tail was up at one point. An interesting experience but no great problem. Janie has been in and out of Old Buck on many occasions over the last few years.
all I wanted to point out was that you had spelt Tomahawk incorrectly
Surely the correct spelling of Tomahawk is Traumahawk???
Now if I’m not mistaken the Traumahawk is a low wing thingy and the nice looking Piper that Moggy flies is high wing???? I may have missed something here but I think I may have spotted a difference.
As for the original question I agree with everyone else’s comments I’d do exactly the same and have done on more than one occasion.
Fantastic shot of our Stearman Dan and a nice one of the Mustang, I do like that Dragon, it’s a wonderful restoration.
There is also the substantial remains of the tail section of a Marauder which all being well is shortly to go on display again in Essex (UK)
It’s particularly alarming as Spitfires have never been that good with keeping their Undercarrige Pintle Shear Bolts in one piece anyway (having been involved with repairing the results of such a failure a few years back).
Now that I am away from the Spitfire world are the regular pintle NDT inspections still in force in the UK and would this extend to operators in the rest of the world?
Allen I picked that one up in a second hand book shop in Long Melford about 3 weeks ago. I haven’t had much of a chance to read through it though. I think thats the one, its quite an old book isn’t it?
Long Melford!!! Now there’s a place, are you sure it was a bookshop and not an antiques shop?
Couple of good secondhand bookshops in Sudbury as well if you are in the area.
Nice!!!!!!!
You don’t always see a lot of flame, thankfully it is very rare and usually will only occur on a hot start with a little more fuel being primed through than neccesary. The fire will almost always blow itself out if the prop keeps turning. As for common practice, I can’t really comment on larger organisations such as those at Duxford however with the Mustang we don’t find it neccesay to stand by with a fire extinguisher on start up, however we always know where one is just in case.
Interesting pics to see, not very nice when you are strapped behind a fire breathing Merlin however (or standing outside as ground crew come to that).

Probably this Steph, aircraft seems to be a Grob Tutor
It will be done on Thursday
That’s quite early to start a party at twenty to eight, isn’t it?
Think it actually kicks off ten mins before that, I suppose I meant a 1940’s hanger bash.
Well, if it is not:
The Eaglescott Air Race,
The Cromer Seafood Fly In
The Stoke Gliding Steakout
The Devon Strut Fly In, or
The Old Sarum Summer Holiday Fly In …… then I guess it is a private party to which us troglodites are not invited! 🙁
I guess, if the great chequered-nosed horse was going to be there, it would have been recorded in the diary at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mustangjanie/
Nope none of the above and the chequered-nosed horse will be there, probably in the company of her playmate and other friends. Everyone is invited however they will need to buy tickets and there is no way my picnic will stretch that far, or the wine come to that, I’ll have to prize that away from Mrs Yak11Fan and her friends first 😀
Oh and I guess I’d better update the diary 😮
Nope thats the following weekend, this is further south!!!
A 1940’s hanger bash complete with a line up of WWII aircraft a nice picnic with wine and a beer tent….. Shall I go on????
