Thanks camlobe, ive worked with 8 myself and never noticed it! Nice to get a bit of background info… ta….jase
When i first posted this question it was not intended to cause embarresment or to try and shame anyone or any sqn,it was intended so that I could impart a little knowledge into the “yoof” on my Sqn…which doesnt have any yellow by the way…that is why i went to this font of knowledge..not to try and uncover some shame from the past.
I may be regretting that I started this! As a serving member of the RAF and ground crew, who has done a 4 year tour in Germany with many of these Squadrons I was just curious as to these stories, funny thing ,no one talks about it, its not taught at basic training and you wont find it in Sqn histories..SO are we to forget about these men/women and what they did for us or shall we pretend that only Aircrew are in the Royal Air Force …..
Bruggen ? Bruggen? wheres that???? will NEVER be as good a camp as BFPO43 .Laarbruch!!!!!!.. believe the grunts have destroyed Bruggen and the good name the RAF had in Germany and the Netherlands. Its called “javelin barracks” now I believe.
The dark patch is the refuelling point for the tip tank. Canberras had a nasty habit of settling about a foot while these were being filled!!
Hi Les, most of the hangars at Marham have nearly white floors, pain to keep clean! but mean you can work using a little reflective light. 3 Hanger probably hasnt had a lick of paint since v-bomber days . Add 5 nearly out of date aircraft and you have a perfect snapshot of 1960-70s. Think deep down the linies were sad to see the T4 go.
just a couple of quick points Mr Cooper_ 39 sqn work out of a run down, cold in winter, hot in summer un-modernised hangar…when they,re in the country that is ! if you look at the photo you will see the AOC… H&S dont allow painting of hangers or floors such as in the “good ole days”…….and T4 bomb doors are open from engine start!!! Damien if you were the chap I snapped at while wheeling the giraffe around please allow me to apologize….been a looooong day.
hello again Les…I’m the one with the specks on the left! had a good conversation with the chap who did the acceptance on 131 in 1961!!!!and a very nice lady who remembers 4 sqns of Canberras at Marham alone.Quite sad to think that 39 is the last of the line….except for the Indians of course!
hi Les hope you had a good day…I was the Cpl doing the see off on 31 ,also glad the damn thing started first time!!!!!
thats the nasty “makes you deaf ” type ! we had a few of the four seaters come to laarbruch many moons ago, think it was called a paris? not sure I,d like to fly in .!!
seem to remember that the fouga magista made a noise at start up that used to make your ears bleed!!…through ear plugs and ear defenders. still cant beat the lightning though.
The lightning at Brunty belongs to the Anglo American Lightning Organisation ..AALO …and is part of their spares mountain to enable xs422 to fly in the states.
What about the Canberra???someone must like that old thing…?…..anyone….hello…
just got back from France myself, the atmosphere at the bridge was fantastic on both days and the museum well worth a visit, only marred by the early closing. It closed at 18.30,which i know is quite late on a normal day…but… to see the Veterans being turned away after what was for some a long and very emotional day brought tears to Mrs Jases’ eyes and an angry lump to my throat!!………..
I quite often stop at the memorial on the runway to read the poems and listen to the birdsong..Bardney is well worth a walk around, although i think you can only get access to the forestry site on the north of the airfield
