Why Do We Shun Jets!!!

Having been a member of this message board for sometime and being a restorer of classic jet aircraft (Bucc certainly springs to mind), I cannot help but notice a certain lack of Jet coverage, is there something wrong with hot air blowers, or am I just being silly?? Do not get me wrong, I love seeing and hearing about Spits, Hurri’s and such like, but when ever something happens with a Jet, it always seems to go un-noticed, apart from a very few trusted regulars.
Come on guys, the Jet is here to stay, is’nt it about time we started to hear a bit more about them? 😀

It’s great to see so many of you post images of Cold War Warriors, I wish I could contribute but most of mine are of aircraft on the ground (considering I started this thread, just a tad annoyed!!), aerial photography was not one of my forte’s, restoring them to their former glory is.

Still waiting on info on the Collins Phantom & the IAF Starfighters though!!

Sod it, here’s a photo of a very ground bound but live Bucc, 894!!!!!!!!

And “Stringbag”, I’ve told you before no T.22’s were preserved cos they’re ugly! 😉 That “nose” only looks good on a Bucc.

😮 Blasphemy 😉

Not even one nose section survives, to my knowledge 🙁

PhantomII, please see my earlier apology and correction in this thread. I was misled by an article in the Swedish Historical Aviation journal, which actually stated that the Viggen I photographed was the last UNMODIFIED Viggen to fly! I have never actually seen a Viggen (and only once a pair of Gripens) in this part of Sweden so I thought wrongly that thay must have been grounded by now. I now hope to see at least one flying at Halmstad on Saturday and if I manage to get a decent photo I will post it, to nail my misconception once and for all!

Papa Lima,

I don’t know where you got your information, but the Viggen is to be around for a few years yet. They have been in the process of replacing them, and I believe the first variant to become exctinct will be the JA-37D interceptor variant, with the attack oriented AJS-37’s following later on. There aren’t enough Gripens to replace them all yet.

More Abingdon 1968

Well, Trumper, if you put it like that, I can’t resist posting the only other flypast photo I took on that wonderful day – pairs of Victors and Vulcans (the smoky ones) as far as the eye could see!
Scanned from a slide, and worth the time it took to Photoshop out all the hairs and dust spots!

Apologies for repeating this picture so soon, but for me it epitomises the time when fast jets were numerous, good-looking (Hunters) and powerful (Lightnings)

I really like some jets. Its inevitable, I suppose, that as us older folk remember the jets of our youth, memories of them will be tinged with some nostalgia. When I served at RAF Stanley (FI) in 83 I remember the thrill of being next to the RHAG as they caught the wire (I had to fill in the holes made by the hooks after they had struck the PSP), not really thinking that they would be gone soon.

More recently I saw a GAF F4 display and it was terrific – bought back alot of memories.

The lines of such pedigree jets, Hunter, Vulcan, Comet etc are matched by the pedigree piston types of Spits, Hurris and Mustangs.

To me they are two different breeds with the Turboprop the mixed breed, the sounds of the engines differ enormously, I can pick out the sound of a Merlin from a mile away, I can’t do the same with a jet, these are breeds apart, but I love ’em all.

As an engine bod I used to curse the piston engines against the jet engine, the latter being the easiest to service, apart from changing the starter cartridges on a Javelin!

The awesome power of a Lightning or Vulcan cannot be compared to the likes of a Hawker Hart or Twin Pioneer as they all served their own needs, it is just great that some of them are still around for us to enjoy and of course the icing on the cake is to see them airborne occasionally or even engine start ups and fast taxi tests.

Who was asking about Canberras? In days of old when the RAF was bold and Canberras ruled the skies. . .

Here’s a couple of the best looking Canberra type when in service. It is of course the B(I)8. XH231’s fin badge (a triangle with a black exclamation mark in it) denotes 59 Sqn, XM276 was 3 Sqn. Queen of the skies.

Ah! See the new forum allows multiple piccies from the “browse” option. Good one. 🙂 🙂

And “Stringbag”, I’ve told you before no T.22’s were preserved cos they’re ugly! 😉 That “nose” only looks good on a Bucc.

I also have a real passion for historic jets mainly because they are the Type of “intresting” aircraft I see the most. Living away from the majority of the WW2 aircraft that are flying I make regular visits to Bouremouth Aviation museum and quite often I am rewarded with that wonderful smell of Dehavillland or Hawker jets. I still really love WW2 stuff but Jets have really grown on me since this museum opened in 1997?

A Viggen in flight is LOUD and powerful… I hope you get too see one, it is worth it.

And, just don’t stick with british jets, you have lots more, look at french planes (Mirage3, … ), Italians like the G-91, US like the century series, russians, … there are a lot.
