558 SOLD DOWN THE RIVER
This was picked up from VTTS Website Forum….
===================================================
Quote from home page….If £1M can be identified and raised over the next four weeks,
HEY as an airshow volunteer and a substantial donor, we have been saying that we needed £250,000 by the end of Aug….
And the rest of the £1million in a phased rollout over the next 3-4months…. as we were told by the project bosses..and particularly by Mrs Irwin…
incidentally confirmed TODAY by Dr Robert Pleming by telephone…..
SO WHAT IS GOING ON…….
IS THIS A SELL-OUT BY THE TRUSTEES?
IS ROLL-OUT A SHAM???
IS THERE A HIDDEN AGENDA??
IS 558 BEING ABANDONED AND ON WHO’S ORDERS??
————————————————————————–
Makes you wonder don’t it????
Moggy you had better merge this with other one????
😀 😀 😀
..
There on Sunday… nose is off the Trident but told (uncorroberated)that whole airframe going to East Fortune
Wasn’t the EB52 a Dale Brown concept only??
A225HVY
No according to the QDR there was a plan to convert a number of B52H airframes to EB52-H, Electronic warfare platforms.
..
4 Engined B52 is DEAD….
Under the latest Defense Review, of the 94 airframes on inventry…of which 78 are operational, the USAF plans to retire 38 or half..this will save $681miilion in operational and mantainance costs..
The EB52 concept is also DEAD…
The USAF Bomber Force will be reduced to….
21 x B2a Spirits
75 x B1B Lancers
38 B52H
The smallest USAF Bomber force ever!!
Personally I would write off XL391 .
I couldn’t agree more, you would be better off contacting Paul Hartley and see if he is prepared to let the one he has/had in store at Bruntingthorpe go…. but beware Vulcans have a nasty habit of biting… ask Mr Bateson and Roy Jacobson? and a certain Manchester pub landlord 😀 :dev2: 😀 :dev2:
..
😉 😉 😉
To see HHA’s Bucc back in the air and of course ‘558’s first flight
I’m afraid her web bio doesn’t hold out much hope;
Chirpy Cockney junior accounts clerk who appeared, aged 15, on Double Your Money as a contestant, winning £8 answering questions on Famous Women. Hughie Green asked her back to become a hostess on the show and the subsequent The Sky’s the Limit. Sadly, Rose committed suicide some years later.
I don’t know who produced the item that says Monica comitted suicide, but it is totally wrong….. many years after her fame faded she lived a few doors away from me in a small villiage in the east midlands.
She was a good friend who never really came to terms with the fact, she was no longer in the limelight, she became a heavy drinker and it was this, which finally killed her… she actually fell down the stairs one night and was found dead in the morning.
she is saddly missed
.
XT896, XT897,XT910,XV433,XV469 and XV487 were held in store until August 95.
all in store at 27MU until scrapped….. 8/95 😡 😡 😡 😡
😡
Well, the F4 that OFMC got, was active for a while after being delivered, in that is was reported that Mark H had taken her for a ‘walk’ around the DX taxiways on a few occasions, so if true I doubt that one had her mounts chopped.
Wasn’t there supposidly 4 x F4’s ‘in-store’ for possible future use as high speed target work by BAe after they had chopped the 3 x Lightnings..???
Or was that another of those fancifull yearnings of the rumour mill… 😀
I did say, a few K & M models escaped the mounting chop, OFMC’s being one of them..
I don’t think the JUK’s suffered the same fate because the Waddington one was complete with engines last time I saw it, probabley gone now???…..
I think the “4 in store” is a myth, would that it were true..I think I have traced the fates of all the M’s, K’s and Juk’s.
there were a number of Tiger’s and Firebirds at Conninsby but most have now been chopped or moved, Leaming’s have gone bar one allocated to a museum, Leuchars still has a couple including Black Mike, a very nice K model and there are still a number of gate guards about plus the firedump residents and range targets if any of them still exist.
regards the BAC111’s… that is what I was told at the time, I did say I was sceptical..
😡 😡 😡
On a similar note are there any ex-RAF F4’s out there that could be put back in the sky and operated in a similar manner – ie a revenue earner. I recall the US placed certain constraints on the use of F4s after the RAF had used them… any ideas?
Constraints applied by US were…
1] had to be sold to another air arm
2] retained on MOD property
3] delivered to “Official” museums.. so Bruntingthorpe can’t have one.
4] scrapped….
However I do believe a couple have slipped the net but not sure, if so good luck to their new owners, and don’t tell the yanks, we lost one because someone couldn’t keep their mouth shut.
Am reliably informed by a friend at RAF Waddington, that his team personally cut the engine mountings out of all but 2 or 3 of the RAF’s F4 K’s and M’s that were till in one peice in the mid ’90’s…. also majority of the RR Speys were sold to China (know thats true cause I saw 93 of them in a hangar down south awaiting shipping some years ago) reputedly (minus burners) for their BAC111 fleet, ‘though that sounds a bit far fetched to me, even for the Chinese.
😡
I wish I could help out the lads at Brunty but the commute “Ottawa to Brunty” would be a challenge 😉
You mentioned that you had three different types of Avon engines on her…are they different Mk’s and any idea how she came to have this setup?
Yes… Ottawa is a bit far, but anyone else is most welcome..
Engine fit…..Two genuine 5xx series, One 3xx series, and one 5xx that is fabled as a test/development engine that was , I am given to believe, given to Boscombe to test and they stuck it in Canopus and there it stayed ’till we got it….. unless anyone knows different??
Thanks to 320psi and Appologies to the other groups on Bruntingthorpe, but I wasn’t totally sure I knew all the owners so I avoided the chance of error..
😮 😮 😮
.
When I was training back in my Air Force days I remember one of my instructors saying that the P3K Orion had four generators, one for each engine, and they were so powerful that one alone could supply enough power to electrify a town the size of Blenheim (which then had around 10,000 or so people.
This odd fact has stuck with me. I have often wondered if this has ever been put into practice. I doubt anyone can answer this, but, has an aircraft ever been used to power anything large like a town or hospital or something during a blackout or emergency?
I can only speak about Vulcans and Victors and the answer, without some form of conversion, would I think, be NO…. why?….. the output from the Vforce alternators is 200volts 400hertz 3phase……. household electrical systems is 240volts 50hertz single phase…… Industrial 3phase is 440volts
unless anyone knows different????
.
just out of interest, does the CAA take any interest in things like ground-running only aircraft? I’d presume not as they dont aviate, just wondered if they had any input to the ground runs/taxi runs??
Neil
Short answer is No!!
The CAA, I believe, look on ground running/fast taxi run aircraft as Jet Dragsters. 😮 😮
.
Yes they have done well to keep her in running condition..given that it has been almost eight since her last flight….
Anyone know who looks after all the live airframes at Brunty these days…they have quite a collection..
COMET CANOPUS
The only Comet to move under her own power anywhere in the world.
Many thanks for your kind words..
We do our best with limited time and resources…. Last open day we were concentrateing on servicability rather than prettyfication, but next open day we will try and spruce her up a bit.
Spotty M Driver….. As to the “rot” down the backend, unless you ‘ve found something we don’t know about, this is only surface corrosion which will be easily removed…. care to come and help….. everybody welcome.. no special skills required.
As regards flight…. as was said elsewhere, she will never fly again, due to..
1] Climatic deteriation because she is outside all the time…..
2] ATC Lasham reliquished all interest in the airframe a number of years ago…..
3] BAe have stated they will not give design support (However, they did save her and delivered her to us)….
4] She carries THREE different models of Avon engine…..
5] A Nimrod undercarriage….
6] All the other Boscombe mods…. therefore no way…
We never see these days, anyone from the return to flight project team….. Air Pagents was it????
The Cold War Collection (ex-BAH) Volunteers have direct responsibillity for Comet Canopus, Victor Teasin’ Tina, Buccaneer XX900, Swiss Hunter, Polish Iskra.
As I said we are always looking for new idio… sorry volunteers to come and help keep these old birds running, got any Sundays spare????
Canopus’s Crew 😮 😮
Just thought of something else…we are going to run (hopefully) No2 engine this Sunday morning… I’m checking the engine fire warning cct.
😡 😡 😡
But surely IF this project does collapse and make all the headlines for the wrong reasons the lottery and anyone else will look/think long and hard at any other aviation type project, especially a flying project. 😮
Success or (God forbid) failure of Vulcan project will not affect Lottery funding for any return to flight project of any aircraft, because the HLF has stated that they will not fund such a project, ever again, other revenue sources I can’t say.
