That’s all right, no relation (note the spelling, merely a cheap imitation! 😉 )
My Dad regales us occassionally of a story when he was waiting for the ferry at Picton, South Island in his youth. He and some mates went to a cafe style restaurant and he decided on a steak sandwich. He was halfway through eating it when he lifted the top bread and find a hive of maggots. In the same instance he glanced a copper passing the window so he dashed out and dragged him inside. The policeman shut the place down immediately. Apparently it was rancid in the kitchen.
I was eating fish and chips at the beach once at Mount Maunganui and halfway through the piece of snapper discovered the flesh was riddled with tape worms. I threw up by the car!
There is a Chinese takeawy in Hamilton I visited once that was so filthy and stank so much I was gagging, but I was damned hungry. The walls and floor were coated in grease, thick coats of the stuff. You could see directly into the kitchen and on the floor they had oened out cardboard boxes that provided them with cheap mats. It looked like they’d been down there collecting grease for months. Surprisingly the food wasn’t bad though. In the same block of shops is a bakery which was recommended to me so on another day I went there and bought a cream doughnut. It tasted yuck, mock cream and a bread bun (as in a filled roll bun, not a sweet doughnut mixture) and worse still halfway in I struck a piece of bloody gravel!!! Into the bin it went. The pie I’d also bought was worse, tasted like it’s been wrapped in the Chinese takeawy’s cardboard!
On another occasion I was standing by the Chinese burger bar in Cambridge here, waiting for an order. I’m glad I didn’t order burgers because the Chinese cook was stood there with a bowl of noodles near his chin, shovelling it into his mouth, and half it was falling out of his moth onto the hotplate and burgers. I stood there dumbfounded and watched as he put the burger patties into some poor buggers burgers with his spit and dribble and food all over! I was just a teen then and didn’t think to do anything. I never went back there till the place was sold on, and then it’s only for an ice crew now and then.
I don’t know how people can get licenses to run food establishments sometimes.
