Thanks Mark. Yes, that is the scheme I meant.

The photo in the book’s caption intimates it is over Italy in 1944. So I assume it is a photo of the original?

So, any ideas about the code? Why?

I agree it is a very interesting scheme and nice too. Compare those colours to the desert scheme of the Aussie P40 Setter posted recently, quite a contrast. There’s a lot of scope in the Med Theatre for interesting schemes (for warbirds owners and modellers alike)

Does Red Bull use their collection of aircraft for television adverts, magazine ads and billboard photos etc, overseas? All we see from Red Bull are really corny cartoon adverts. I just wondered if the planes are seen as a whole package for advertising or just flying billboards at the occasional airshow? They could make some cracking adverts ith the planes.

I cannot see any problem with a Red Bull scheme for the P38 – going by the photos Daz posted it isn’t in an authentic scheme now anyway, and advertising on the airframe won’t be much different from a Reno racing scheme will it?

Clearly at the time Bomber Command’s heavy bombers were barely capable of hitting the right country, never mind armoured columns that would be miles away from their reported positions by the time the bombers got there.

This quoted from Norman Franks’ book Forever Strong – The Story of 75 Squadron RNZAF 1916-1990:

“Two nights later a further three Wellingtons again went to the Ruhr, with three more attacking troop communications in Belgium. What was thought to be a blast furnace was successfully bombed by one of the Ruhr force, and a road convoybombed by the tatter three, even though all aircraft had problems with searchlights.”

Perhaps armoured columns were targets of opportunity? Were they sent out and told “look for German supply lines”?

Do you chaps realise that this month marks 20 years since that P51D’s first airshow performance in this country. It is twenty years since Sir Tim Wallis set the warbirds movement in NZ alight. Amazing.

I never realised Monty’s Messenger was yellow underneath. Why was this? Did he get it from Training Command? It’s a very colourful beast. I also wonder what the V signified on the bottom, is that a squadrom code?

Another anomaly is I note the Corsair in US colours still wears its famous RNZAF “Irate Donald Duck” logo that was worn on many RNZAF Corsairs. I believe it was the mascot of a Servicing Unit. The nose art is obviously left over from its old scheme, I wonder if the OFMC had intended the US colour scheme to be merely temporary and it was to be returned to its proper RNZAF scheme? I hope the RNZAF roundels do reappear soon, now that its home.

One of the most ingenous escapes I’ve read about was in Richard Pape’s book “Boldness Be My Friend”. He was RAF bomber crew member and was shot down. I haven’t read the book since i was a teen, but I recall he made many foiled escape attempts. In the end he fooled the Germans and got home thus:

Another POW got a disease, I think kidney disease or something. The Germans had picked it up in a routine urine test. Thy decided to get the Red Cross to repatriate this prisoner. Pape got an idea. He was due for a urine test and medical himself. He worked in the kitchens so he stole two corks and a short lenth of hose. He fashioned the larger cork using a pen knife, and once he’d put them together he had an ingenious container that he got this other prisoner to pee into. To the casual observer in the camp hospital when he had to do his urine test, it looked just like a willie! So he flopped this hose out instead of his real one, and squeezed out the sick prisoner’s urine! Of course it was tested and was positive for the disease. So they repatriated him back to Britain!!

That’s a true story I believe. Great book. I found it again the other day so must read it again some day.

I’d like to say that I really wish I had the opportunities to attend the museums, airshows and events that you guys in the UK can. I’d especially like to go to that Twinwood Glenn Miller event, it sounds great. And Legends too. Plus many others. But I simply cannot.

I think that those of you who do take part in the forum meets are very fortunate that you’ve managed to meet other people with a similar interest and you can share these events and visits together. Like-minded company makes such a thing so much better than taking uninterested family, etc.

Pretty much everyone who contributes to this board seem like very nice people. In all honesty this is the only public forum on the internet that I’ve thought this. Most forums have anonymous wierdoes who just like to slag each other off in the rudist possible ways. This forum is so different. It allows people to share their genuine interest, and it is a wonderful spin-off that they are sometimes able to meet, get to know each other and interact without the aid of the internet.

From my outsider’s point of view, I don’t think there is a clique at all. Every event I have seen coming up is made totally public, with open invitations to anyone who wants to come or can come. The fact that some are keener or more able than others to attend more often (some from long distances too) does not mean that they have set up an exclusive society. The other great thing is after the event they all share their photos and experience. Doesn’t smack of being an exclusive little society to me at all.

I for one am very, very much looking forward to meeting Steve Patterson and John Parker, and hopefully Chris Cattermole too (and maybe others?) very soon at our upcoming Pacific Rim Forum 2005. That’ll be a blast.

Keep arranging the meets for those who do appreciate it, and don’t worry about a few negative, perhaps jealous, comments from the minority.

They were indeed practicing over RAAF East Sale.

Maybe that is a regular move in their display, but I stand by my statement that it looked very dangerous.

From memory AvSpecs had facilities in both Rotorua and Ardmore for a while, but they were merged into one place at Ardmore a few years ago. So the wings may have been at Ardmore.

Interesting photos guys.

What exactly is the destiny of these aircraft? Are they ALL awaiting eventual scrapping? Or are some likely to go back into service? Or perhaps be sold to other Air Forces? I’m not entirely sure how it works.

There’s a lot of stuff there more modern than what our Air Force flies today.

And regarding the Pakistani F16’s you mention Flood, is that the ones that were bought by New Zealand for the RNZAF, and then given back by the incoming Government? I’ve often wondered what happened to them.
