yes, I have seen that one and have a copy. A wonderful film. Footage from it appears in all three of Jack Currie’s films.

Thanks to your tip Jim C, as well as The Watchtower I’ve had a lazy Sunday – but an enlightening one – watching Jack Currie’s other two documentaries, The Lancaster Legend, and The Ausburg Raid, on Youtube. All three are superb and I’d recommend them highly.

Got any more suggestions for good quality vintage RAF Bomber Command documentaries?

I just watched The Watchtower, what a superb documentary that was. Really good. And such a good presenter too.

Thanks for the link Dave, just finished watching. There were quite a few good documentaries around at that time as I recall, such as The Watchtower with Jack Currie.

That film is so poor quality they could sell the first bit to Discovery Channel to use in one of their many pointless UFO documentaries.

Was this the ex-BBMF Mk XIX Spitfire with the contra-rotating props?

The Hurricane replica at Omaka came from MOTAT off their pole and is a BofB film replica but it came to NZ before the 1980’s as far as I know. MOTAT replaced their one with a different replica that they brought into the country, I think mostly fibreglass and less wooden structure than the one at Omaka.

The one at Omaka is in Operation Torch RAF colours, wearing the star and yellow roundel ring, this year. The one at MOTAT wears Sir Keith Park’s colours.

Bruce, Avspecs did create a specially designed container, made from two 40 foot containers cut down, joined and shaped. i saw the guys there building it and lots of photos of it are on my forum. It went on the only ship that crosses the Pacific regularly that takes larger and irregular container sizes.

The Lincoln Sport I refurbished was still 1938 casien and although not flown often hasn’t fallen apart.

Whereabouts is this Lincoln Sport based Stan?

Well it has taken over six years for a reply to me initial post but boy has it been worth the wait. Thanks to all who have replied, especially to Snapper for that very fascinating letter.

I am pleased that this thread has helped me to understand the man, and no matter whether or not he may have embellished a little or twisted a fact or two, his book “Boldness Be My Friend” inspired me as a kid and helped to set me on a path that has now led me to have such a greater understanding and knowledge and personal connection with WWII and our veterans; and I thank Richard Pape for that.
