A very good point Jim. When I was made redundant from aviation the first time in 2001 (It happened to me twice that year) I investigated the possibility of opening just such a store at STN in collaboration with a very well known enthusiasts supplier based in Southern England, but I discovered two very big obstacles in my way, both supplied by the good ol’ BAA:
1. Ground footage rental within the terminal is expensive even for the “chains” already there, and the percentage “rake off” from your takings would make items unfairly expensive.
2. The general attitude of the BAA was one where I don’t believe that I was taken seriously and I don’t think that they really wanted a store of that kind “marring” their pristine LoCo shrine.
I investigated other possibilities nearby but none of the premises examined were really up to it so reluctantly I abandoned the idea.
A shining example of what can be achieved for the enthusiast when a local and enthusiastic entrepreneur and a progressive people friendly airport authority get together is the Airtrans shop in the terminal at EMA. I would highly recommend this store to anyone. It is well stocked, always busy with the travelling public as well as EMA employees and aircrew and is a credit to its owner Steve Gensler and the guys upstairs who run EMA, who seem to be very “pro-spotter”. This store was the model that I would dearly have loved to have brought to STN, now that I have resumed my career in aviation maybe someone else will have a go. In the meantime I shall continue to journey the long haul to EMA! p.s No I don’t have shares in Airtrans!
Aw shucks guys!! Now I’m not sure. Looking at it from directly underneath and at that alt it could have been either of these. Maybe it was the Israeli, if it had come from PIK I think that it would have been higher than it was when overhead me a few miles from STN. Thanks again folks.
If Ryanair went in there I guess it would be Gatwick South!!
Number 3 for me, followed by 1 then 2. Although they’d all look better on an A330!!
Great pics!..More anytime please.
I guess we can all get bored with our “local” But I do wish mine was LHR or MAN!
As did mine!! Over to you Ren.
Beautiful pic of the KLM.
Thanks Shamrock, but definately not an A340. Ren I think you may have solved it as the engine cowlings had the grey front end as per your pic, these really stood out due to high level of illumination to the underside of the aircraft against the pure blue sky. As we see quite a few KC135s going into MHZ over here I knew it wasn’t one of those, saw an ATA Tristar 500 going into there yesterday, and neither was it an AWACS….Cheers mate.
“It could be something to do with this one?”
“No good asking me”
Lovely pics! If you think thats boring you should try having STN as your local! Ooooh there goes another Ryanair!!!!
Like it!!!!!!!!
Mmmm…….Interesting times.
Love that SIA job Sandy. As things stand today would’nt it be entirely correct to say that Boeing has no DIRECT competitor to the A380? Purely an observation, I’m quite ready to be corrected here.
C’mon Sandy, how about a “stab” at AZ????
