Teddymax, wow an Egyptair F27, first time I’ve ever seen one. That LTN viewing area was one of the best that I remember visiting as a child. garyrussel, That Carvair site is great, thanks for the link.
I can’t argue with a single word you’ve posted. Unfortunately, like it or not, both him and his ‘airline’ will be around for many years to come, and that will be because a great many people fly with Ryanair, irrespective of what this man says or does. Shaving off the odd € here and there, will keep bums on seats. Most travellers don’t give a second thought for the welfare of those that are employed to enable them to to get those ‘cheap’ fares in the first place. It could rightly be argued, why should they, being as no one, well in this country at least, is forced to work anywhere at the end of a shotgun barrel, and none of us are forced to fly with this crowd. Before I’m accused of Ryanair bashing, all these ‘low cost airlines’ are IMO much the same. Even even so, I personally find this guys attitude crass and bawdy, but to his shareholders and passengers alike, he is a ‘God”
Mmm…don’t forget Concorde was joint Anglo-French and if we hadn’t been locked into a treaty to build it it would had been dumped….it cost both Governments a LOT of money
Oops, yes sorry about that, forgot that was French involvement. Apologies to any French viewers;)
Great link!….Bit cheeky that it’s already on Google books!…Didn’t know about the Dart DC-7 based Carvair development, but Douglas proposed a potential Tyne re-engining programme for the BOAC DC-7Cs as part of the sales ‘bait’. I think
I think that’s where I got confused ref Darts an Tynes.
Argonaut, I agree with you, times have certainly changed. Some would argue that our part in the Airbus product is something we should be proud of, and I am, but it’s really not comparable with the likes of Comets, Concords, Vulcans and Lightnings, and to think, we built them all on our own;) Now that’s something I’m really proud of
Argonaut, many thanks for the pic. ‘Super Carvair’ details here:
Scroll down to page 46 onwards. Picture of a concept design on 48. For Tynes, substitute RR Darts.
What a smashing collection of images. Back in ’75, I travelled SEN-OST-SEN. Outbound was on a Herald, in a very strange blue based livery, with the BAF titles in full on the engine nacelles, the return was a trusty Carvair. The British United, and Aer Lingus were my favourite liveries on the Carvair. Am I right in thinking that there was a proposal by ATEL at one time, to build a ‘Super Carvair’ based on the conversion of DC7/7Cs, with RR Tyne turboprops? If so, I bet that it would have been something to see.
It would be good to see those pics when you have the time. I worked Sterling flights at STN thru much of the 80s, Caravelles, 727s, and for a couple of summers, a DC8-63. A colleague and myself took a staff travel flight, on a Sterling Caravelle. Like you, we were taken round the Sterling facility at Kastrup, they were great people, as we’re their crews. We could see the Conair hangar, but sadly we did not have the time to visit them, we also handled their 720s at STN. Happy Days:)
Argonaut, like the 3 Great Danes. Flying Enterprise went on to become Conair. That Sterling livery looked good on all the types they operated…….especially the Caravelle.
Some sad pics, the content, not the standard:D A friend of my mother’s, used to be a C/A for Channel, mainly on Viscounts, and later on 1-11s. Some of those curtains are a disgrace;)
Thanks for posting those EC. Having trawled my old log books, I do have an entry for me ramping G-RUSH, and it was indeed a Chieftan.
Brilliant pics guys. That TAR Carvair looks as though its getting a gentle ‘kiss’ from a crosswind. Looking at the shots of the Vikings and Daks, it seems quaint to see the window curtains all smartly tied back. I’ve often wondered whose job it was to make sure that they all were, especially on the likes of the larger planes of the day, the DC family, Connies, Strats etc. Easier now I guess, just ensure all the plastic ‘blinds’ are up before boarding!
Well, I joined Servisair back at the end of ’81, and while I admit that I can’t be absolutely sure when we started to handle that airline, I’m certain that they were around prior to ’85. As Flightmech has said, the incident in question took place in ’84, and it was in my early career at Servisair, when I was ‘ramping’ their flights. I can remember that one of the Trislanders back then, was waring quite a garish green and yellow striped livery with ‘XP’ titles, it was repainted in the Kondair silver/blue livery some time later.
Always a shame to see any airline fail, especially when reckless and inept management decisions lead to hard working, dedicated staff losing their livelyhoods.
Yup, that was the happy ending ie: he got down alive and in one piece, that I alluded to in my earlier post. The landing was not very dignified so I’m told.
Look forward to that.
