Vee one, please keep these shots coming! It must be my age, but this thread has brought back so many great memories. As has been said, thanks Eh for starting this one, and to all the other members who have contributed, its great:)
Some very nice shots. Sorry, but the ‘717’ will always be the MD87 to me.;)
Indeed they were. Rngway in the late 60’s early 70’s it was common for the Air France versions to drop a chute on landing. Can’t remember if the Alitalia ones did.
Agreed, it is perhaps the most beautiful Jet Airliner ever made (Along with the VC10 and the Concorde of course). And the 707. And, the Trident. And, the Convair 990. Mustn’t forget the 747. OK, DC8.
In those days, as there was no CAD systems, the designs of those beautiful craft came direct from the minds of human designers, and not microchips. The results being self evident.
Great Carvair pictures Peter. I once flew on one of those beasts from OST to SEN in ’75, quite an experience. IMO, an aircraft often overlooked in the contribution that it made to the post war British airline history. It was in its time, a novel and practical idea from that great man Sir Freddie Laker.
A beautiful, beautiful aircraft……..but I am unashamedly biased:)
I have been lucky enough to have flown on Caravelles more than once. They were Transeuropa, STN-PMI-STN, Sterling STN-EBJ-STN and finally Transwede, STN-ARN-STN. I always liked the look of the Transeuropa colours, especially the dark area around the flight deck glazing. I have always thought that the F28 was a good looking follow on from the Caravelle, but that French beauty will always be the ‘aeronautical love’ of my life 😉
Oh yes please!
haha good video.
Yes, I can just imagine Airline officials in a meeting like that ‘what we’re looking for is our planes to be in a livery thats, er, basically, all white’
“What we’re looking for chaps, is something soothing and minimalist, what we’re not looking for is a design that would make us stand out and attract attention on a crowded apron or in the skies. We’ve seen your portfolio with your blockbusting Finnair design, and we’re damned impressed, so thats why we’ve come to you guys. We look forward to touching base with you real soon……remember now……lots ‘o white”;)
Medal material.
Indeed it was. Looked just as fine on their B720Bs as well. One Friday, a couple of us from the Servisair lair, scrounged a ride on a Maersk 737-200 to GEN and back. The STN-GEN sector was empty, with the return sector GEN-STN around two thirds full. These were charters operated that day by the airline for Opel cars. I think there were 3 rotations in all that day Luvvit!:D
I think I took this Aero Caribbean Britannia being serviced in the Monarch Hanger at Luton in 1983. Remember it?
I certainly do, and I can remember being at LTN on a night shift, covering some diverted mail flights from STN, the night that a Cubana example diverted in, en route from Prague to Shannon, then on to Havana. A major engine problem soon sorted out by the very capable guys at Monarch engineering. The Redcoat Brits looked damn fine too, as did their CL44. Alas, we’ll never see their like again.:(
Neil, I never realised that the Trident was operated in the Air China livery, looks pretty good. Still prefer the old CAAC myself:)
Finnair, see what you’ve started! :diablo:
You must have read my mind. It would appear these colour, or rather the lack of it, schemes are descending into a mire of minimalism. It seems that those so called ‘brand experts’ are charging a lot of ‘money for old rope’ as my Nan used to say. Crying shame.:(
Maersk wanted to serve London but decided to pick Southend rather the Luton or Stansted as the powers-that-be dictated the LGW/LHR were “off limits” for some reason. Believe it was the late 80s before they got permission to go to LGW.
At the time, those of us working at STN did expect to see Maersk at STN, as they already had a full charter operation there with 737-200s.
Once again some lovely and nostalgic pics. There’s another member here who’ll enjoy those Trident shots:) My favourite livery on the VC10, and it has to be a ‘Super’ is the ‘Speedbird’ colours, classy or what. My uncle used to work for BOAC at LHR back in the days of the DC7Cs, Britannias, Strats etc. It was thanks to him, that I caught the aviation ‘bug’, sadly he’s no longer here, but to him I say, “Thanks”.
Thanks for those great pics Sarah. Aviation has been, and always will be, a very big part of my life. Working in it was like being paid a good salary to go out to play every day, in fact, I think I would have paid my employer to employ me;) I forgot to mention in my work history in my previous post that I did 9 months for Monarch in ’83, based at LGW, it was great to have been in with the introduction into service of the black and yellow 757s, I think we, along with Air Europe both got our 757s into service before BA, but I could be wrong on that…was a long time ago. I did a year with Aeroflot at LHR in ’93. I often think back to those glorious days on the Queens Building, and I genuinely feel sorry for the younger generation of LHR photographers who were too late to experience that. BTW, I forgot to mention it, that TAP 707 at the top of the page looks great, I can still remember seeing their 727-100s at LHR…….oh here I go again….enough:)
