My Comment:
“Rules or Guidlines.
Come on Councillors – Honour the man now.
Remember that the only reason why you are now serving and you have your rules and/or guidlines is because of men like him keeping England (and the rest of us) safe from Nazi domination.
People have written so people can amend!”
Their Reply:
Mr McDonald, good morning, thankyou for your ‘e’ mail, attached is a message from Linda Butcher, Town Clerk on behalf of Crowborough Town Council
Crowborough Town Council acknowledges your e-mail and notes the comments contained. The attached document sets out the facts of the matter for your information.
Additionally, the Planning and Development committee has recommended to Council that something other than a road or development should be named after Wing Cmdr Doe.
STATEMENT OF FACT Re. STREET NAMING
1. Wealden District Council is the authority that undertakes street naming.
2. Crowborough Town Council is consulted regarding names suggested by developers and is invited to suggest names.
3. Currently there are no developments or streets in Crowborough without names.
4. Crowborough Town Council maintains a list of names for when a development or street requires naming.
5. A name is put forward to Wealden District Council and that Council makes the final decision.
POLICY : Internal Process for Crowborough Town Council
1. Anyone (or organisation) can suggest a name for consideration.
2. These names could be of people or anything relating directly to Crowborough, i.e. Lincoln and Welland Regiment, Montargis [twin town].
3. The person (organisation) submitting a name should include full details about the suggested name.
4. Each suggestion will be considered on merit and if approved, be added to the Council’s Approved List.
5. The Council will not include anyone on the Approved List who is still living.
6. When a development/road is identified, the Planning and Development committee will match the most appropriate name from the Approved List.
7. If considered appropriate by the Planning and Development Committee, the street name sign will include a plaque giving a brief resume of the person named.
8. The name will then be submitted to Wealden District Council.
Well they just received one from NZ
[QUOTE=Dave Homewood]What I want to know is, I have seen several photos of Sunderlands and Catalinas (non-amphibious types) on the edge of RNZAF Hobsonville’s grass runway. They were put there on retirement to await the scrappers in the 1960’s. But how did they get there is what I want to know. From my memory of living there for 7 months, I am sure they cannot have been towed up from the wet apron as that’s down a hill which has only one access – a narrow road with a tall bank on one side going upwards. QUOTE]
Dave,
There is also an access road on the eastern end of the apron (Harrier Point) on the city side of the hangar and this where they were winched up as it is rather a steep incline. This from an “old-dig” when I asked the same question.
Sunderland @ Wellington Airport 1959
The photo is reversed so I have taken the liberty of correcting it, hope that is OK.
The building in the background are (from left to right):
1. Wellington City Council Hangar – since demolised with an RNZAF Air Movements building in its place.
2. CAA Hangar
(both these were moved during reconstruction)
3. Wellington Aero Club clubrooms.
In front of the clubrooms you can see an original crash gate (5?) which was above the pedestrian/cycle underpass that replaced the original Coutts St that was cut off by the runway.
The aircraft from memory was NZ4113:M. There was a crystal-clear shot in one of the RNZAF flight-safety publications that showed the aircraft just after it had done the “touch & go” clearly showing the bilge water escaping. Wish I had half-hitched that magazine now….
The photo would have been taken from the Wexford Rd hill on the north-eastern end of the airport, where I was for the duration of that weekend.
And – Oh those F-101 Voodoos….For an 8 year old seeing them in action!
I used to have a copy of the Aeroplane annual, I think from 1955 showing amongst other jems a couple of pics of the Lanc on its last operational flight by the school of MR.
I hate to say it but that paint scheme seemd to make the Lancs look OLD…
Wish I still had that book..
Also Bookmarks in the Parkway Arcade at Takapuna in Auckland’s North Shore.
They can have a great selection of Aviation related titles, I should know having spent a dollar or two there.
If you want a good “private publication” read, I can recommend “GeTaWay” by Gordon Thompson Woodroofe, since deceased. Soft-covered with 320pp. He was the only Kiwi airman to escape from a PoW camp.
Copies are still available from his widow so drop me a line if you are interested in obtaining a copy and I will dig out her contact details.

The issue is sold out but you MAY be able to pick up a copy on the ‘net or 2nd hand bookstalls.
I will keep an eye out for you in NZ if you wish.
