Brain fade here but how about “The Converter”?
Converts fuel into noise..
The type escapes me but may have been a Harvard, A-4 or a Dart-engined transport (Andover, F-27 or Viscount in NZ) but could have also been another type entirely.
Others:
P-47 – Jug
B.747, B-52 – Aluminium Overcast
B.170 – Ug.
I’m wif Moggy: Bf….
I love seeing old aircraft being displayed to their best while limiting stress and strain on engines & airframes.
They may be a 60 year old design, often with modern materials, and be a hell of a lot more reliable than they were when they left the factory but the fact remains that most are rare birds and are deserving of careful treatment enabling them to remain airworthy for as long as possible.
Especially the Bf.109 of any model. I was horrified to read in another thread that someone thought the sound of the DB.601 was similar to the Merlin! Cough cough spit spit!!!
As for the Pitts – well they are just not designed to fly in a straight line are they? I still love watching their antics and my head is still spinning from a flight a couple of years ago…
Reversed pic was what I thought.
Nose gear door was a clue – also the factory-fitted radio aerial on the guard of the car and I was thinking of a FB Victor myself
B-170 in RNZAF Service: 40,000 rivets flying in close formation
MB339C: Sharpie (reference to the nose shape as opposed to the Bluntie that it replaced in 14 Sqn)
DC-3/C47: Gooney Bird (American)
There is nothing like a good dump & burn.
I saw my first one at Ohakea back in ’74, as a rookie firefighter.
God am I that old??
So how did you guys break the code>>>enigma???
Must say you had all cryptoanylists confused but us Kiwis saw thru you Cane Toads and realised your code was plain Ozlish
Paul,
…. I wonder if someone will have the gumption to rescue the B(I)8 from NZ? A display of three Canberras – to show their versatility in Cold War roles – would be quite acceptable…
No way buddy…it’s ours!!!
A couple of things I remember Battler doing is opting to use his Whirlwind for one final sortie to shoot up some staff car rather than using the Beaufighter (I think) that his unit had been re-equiped with.
Then while flying Beaus, being attacked by Fw.190’s and dropping to ground level – shock horror there dead ahead is power pylons! After a suspense-filled week the next Lion issue revealed that Battler manages to fly below the lines while the hapless enemy pilot hits them and crashes..
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh memories!
Being a Kiwi, for me it would be Colin Gray. Only one aircraft damaged by enemy fire (during Dunkirk) throught his wartime experiences as far as I can remember.
Al Deere (who must have used more than 9 Lives) was to expensive in aircraft and laundry. 😉
I find that the canopy is higher than on the original.
Me too.
Plus the nose wheel plumbing and doors.
Had read the same article and often wondered the truth behind the matter, due to the squared-ff wing-tips and fin.
[QUOTE=SadOleGit]Born 1954 me, and loved Air Ace Picture Libabry – remember “Battler Britton” – the artist Ian Kennedy’s work was exceptional/QUOTE]
1950 vintage myself.
LOVED Air Ace, oh yes… Every time I was given 1/6d off to the shop I went.
This was on top of Lion Magazine (c/w Battler Brittain) with the coloured front cover and those aircraft cut-aways. Funny, the one I remember is the Ju.86 with the dustbin gunners position (shudder). Lion came out in NZ every Monday for 6d.
What width was the ordnance carried in the Coastal Command role? Would it fit in the Stirlings infamous narrow split bomb bays?
Flood
Yeah – that’s what I wondered.
Hoping some Cracker-Stackers may help out here.
John, four ex RNZAF Avengers remain in NZ today
NZ2504, NZ2505, NZ2527 & NZ2539
There is talk of at least two groups wanting to purchase Avengers for the Warbirds scene too but I don’t know whether this will happen.
As far as I am aware, only one group – a certain organisation, that recently has had their toys taken away by Auntie Helen, has siezed on Oscar Duck’s idea and are attempting to obtain clandestine funds to import some TBF/TBM’s in Godzone.
Rumour also has it that the 4 existing examples will be impressed as INST Airframes. 😉
There is NO (traceable) paperwork that 1 x TBF = 1 x A-4 or 339C
