Entered!
Glad I hung on before buying my new charts, I had a feeling there would be a new release.
Typical though that where I live is covered by 5, 6 & 8, so I can see I will be back to doing what I used to do when Stationed at Shawbury:
That was covered by 4 maps, so I used to have to spend hours in the ops room sticking the 4 maps together, trimming them into a useable size and then going through the amendments for all 4 and updating them.
It would take 2-3 hours to make your map, before you even thought of drawing a track line on it!
It would probably fit in a 9000 though, I never did manage to fill up any of the 3 I had!
NickC, good luck with your endeavours and welcome to the forum!
I have no experience of either centres, but I would echo Moggy’s comments. years ago I was forced by circumstance to use a club with a cliquey atmosphere, over one that I knew to be inclusive, and that probably compounded my decision to give up flying.
Some other tips and questions:
Try and talk to some of the members on the QT to get a view of the club
What is availability like?
Does the hourly rate include all Landings?
Are the Instructors, professional trainers or Pre-ATPL hours builders?
What is the social scene and the attitude post-PPL? (fly-outs, barbeques, continuous improvement, etc)
What range of aircraft do they have available for progression? (Complex, Taildraggers, Twins, Aeros, etc)
I belong to Conington club, they have an Arrow and a Beech Duchess available for post-PPL progression, and actively encourage night and IMC ratings. We have just hosted the VAC Valentine Rally, and I have already been invited on a Fly out to Le Touquet (timing wrong unfortunately)
I anticipate that I will also join NSF at Sibson as well later on, as they have a grass field, a Cub, Tiger Moth and Pitts…..
I am not sure what Direction I want to go in yet…long distance touring in the Duchess, or lazy Summers evening lolling about in a Cub with the door open…hmm decisions, decisions:D  😉
Whichever, just go and commit Aviation, they can’t lock you up for it!
Could you imagine a Constellation with a single tail? Just wouldn’t look right IMHO.
Obviously Douglas experimented with the twin tail on the DC5, but went back to the single fin for the 6 and 7
I remain to be convinced that the rudders on the SR71 are in the ‘slipstream’ of the engines 😉
Moggy
Oh alright you got me there, it was obviously just force of habit by Kelly…:D
I have heard on a couple of documentaries on Kelly Johnson and his team at Lockheed, that they liked to have a rudder in the slipstream of each engine, where practical, to offset some of the effects of assymetric thrust. Some of the examples of this are:
Electra/Hudson/Ventura
P38
Constellation (4 was pushing it, so they stuck with 3)
Blackbird! (Remember the 1 Afterburner flypast at Mildenhall Air Fete with both Rudders on full deflection)
and there were probably others
There are some advertised for sale in the back of ‘Pilot’ Magazine.
Complete with gunsights, rocket rails and machine guns, apparently!
Sadly no Beaver on floats for this company due to certification problems. Instead it should be a Cessna Caravan.
I thought Caravans had certification issues in the UK? I heard that it was a Cessna 206 floatplane that they were using?
Some Great Photos there, very atmospheric.
We didn’t mind pausing our meetings for a minute every day at 11:00 in our Chertsey office as it went over, just reminded us how good we once were….
A Friend with a D50 told me that he views the D40 as a lower-spec camera than the D50 (hence the lower monicker) But I can’t recall what the 2 key features he mentioned that were lacking?
The Yak thing is a Nanchang CJ-6 if I remember correctly!
I think there is a share in this one advertised in Loop?
Certainly made a lovely noise as it joined overhead, and I think it looks less ungainly on it’s undercarriage than the Yak (has proper retracting main wheels as well) but was surprised that it has 280BHP against the Yak’s 360/400 does that make it a little easier to convert onto?
Not that I can afford the share at the moment, nor would get Senior Management Approval for such a dangerous looking machine (in her eyes)
RobAnt,
my friend has just upgraded from his 5100 to the 6500FD (£190 from eBay) and got it yesterday, he is raving about it as well!
If it is that good I might chop in my FZ5 for it, whilst the Panasonic takes a very nice picture, there is still too much shutter lag, and the Macro feature is not brilliant.
PS I always enjoy a good tug in the morning….:D
Also check that they are not Factory Re-conditioned, these are cameras that have been faulty, returned and fixed, but can’t be re=sold as new. eBay is awash with these, some are OK, some are not!
I have bought 2 irons, they were awful, but I have bought 2 Factory Reconditioned Dell Computers and they are great (and were half price)
I bought my Panasonic FZ5 second hand from eBay, and it is like new, secondhand Cameras and Hi-Fi seem to be what eBay was made for!
Damien watch out youve got comppetition. 😀
I love the photos that Kids take at this age, they don’t know the rules (not into sun, keep it straight) they just take photos of what they see. Most of the output is awful, but you do get these gems mixed in among them.
Thanks AW, I will show Rhys when I get home tonight.
The picture of the Robin, However, does not do justice to that Shade of Green….It is so awful I kinda like it…..:D
