Great photo’s – thanks for sharing them.
I’d love to see a few airworthy Scouts or Wasps. We had loads of them didn’t we? Surely it can’t be _that_ hard. 🙁
Roy.
Kennet has 2 Wasps, and sold their Scout to Nigeria.
There have been a few advertised for sale recently, they go for between £75-100k for an airworthy one.
The subject of the difficulty/costs of getting a Wessex into the air has been discussed before, but to summarise:
Good pictures by the way, whereabouts is the Heli museum?
It’s owned by Aces High actually. 😉
As you say, no plans to scrap it as it comes in handy for films.
It might not be long though before Dunsfold is ‘scrapped’ as the Rutland Group (the airfields present owners) plan to redevelop it into a new housing complex. 😡
Time to get writing I think.
Cheers
Paul
James May wrote about it in last month’s Top Gear Magazine, as well as complaints about his flying noise at White Waltham
Special guest pilot is Bruce Dickinson from Iron Maiden so we’re toying with either calling it a Taxi-Run To The Hills or 426, The Number Of The Beast 🙂 Any even more corny suggestions would be welcomed!
426 Acacia Avenue?
4 Quid is all she asks for, but everyone has their Vice 😀
Back when I first did my PPL, and I was short on cash, I would not fly for the first 11.5 months of the then 13 month period, and then do a check ride followed by 4 hours solo over 4 weeks, with 2 spare for bad weather, etc. It was the only way I could afford to do it, and I felt safer doing it that way.
Now I am getting my currency back, I intend to fly at least once or twice a month, and will take a ‘military’ attitude to preparation and checklists (ie use them!) and make sure that I practice at least one major emergency on each trip.
Apparently the Wokkas returning from the Falklands were all Banana shaped as they had been lifting containers of captured weapons on the centre-line SACRU (Semi-Automatic Cargo Release Unit) which has a weight limit of 10 tonnes.
It was discovered when the radios were removed from the racks, and the replacements wouldn’t fit…..
Any truth in the rumour of it merging with the new-found Russian Stirling supporters club? 😀
Are either going to make it to Legends?
Sorry…..had to ask 😉
Welcome Alan, watch out for flying Vulcans as well……
The RC world has seen a surgence of pusher-prop models, mainly with the improvement in electric performance, model jets can have a pusher prop providing thrust at the designed jet efflux point for more realistic flight characteristics, with the Battery placement addressing the rearward CofG issue. (I have an Electric Aero L39 with this config),
Trying to do RC glow pushers adds a layer of complexity regarding fuel tanks/flow and control (the clunks/feeds have to face the same way as a tractor installation in order to maintain consistent flow)
As for 1:1 scale aircraft, the Dornier DoX, Focke Wulfe thingy, Horton flying wing, Northrop flying wing, and Beech starship spring to mind
It makes me wish I had my Dad’s 1973 MGB Roadster with me. I could have driven that up to the show and really let my hair down (Which is virtually impossible. Those who know me will testify to that).
Pimms, anyone? 😉
My next door neighbour sometimes pops along with his 1947 MG TC (ex Tristan Farnham from TVs All Creatures Great & Small), it is the only time, apart from Little Gransden, when he drives it to park it in a field (normally too busy rallying his MGA in France)
Somehow the whicker picnic hamper seems to be in keeping with the atmosphere
I think Wessex boy means C-5s at Travis or maybe C-17s?? as all the Starlifters have been retired…..
Tim
I thought so too, so I was most surprised to see a stretched one (with bump/refuelling probe) in the Travis circuit. I think that there are just a few soldiering on, I have seen that there have been a few museum deliveries recently, I have also heard that the C5s have an issue with their verticle stabilisers and are being grounded…
Terrible News
back in ’87 my CFI died at Norwich practicing a spin and recovery demonstration below circuit height in preperation of the Norwich Airshow, the previous week he had practiced it at circuit height, with me in the aircraft…..
I did full spin and recoveries during training, and then practiced them on my own later on, from 5000′, to make sure I was comfortable with them (against club rules for studes…). I also asked for a demonstration next time I was in a chipmunk on AEF.
When I was on my Flying Scholarship at Norwich, there was a part-time instructor that owned a Slingsby Firefly and a 310. After some work was done, he felt that it was flying slow and wondered if the gear doors were hanging, so I was asked to video his 310 from a 2nd 310 (G-EGEE), whislt they did some comparative power/speed checks.
Lovely aircraft, felt huge inside after C150/172s, but seemed to take forever to do the holding point checks!
Kestral, I am in the same boat (last flew in ’89) I have discussed it with the CFI at Conington, and the only thing we have agreed in addition to the above is that I should re-take my Air-Law exam, as that will be the area of greatest change. (didn’t have procedures for post 9/11 fighter escort when I last took it)
Email the CAA about your medical, I did and got a helpful reply the next day (go the CAA website, search on medical and then click on contact us) As it is 21 years since my last medical I have to have the full Class 2.
I was due to start my assault on re-gaining my currency earlier this year, but idiotically I resigned from my job to start my own business, so am a little busy 😮 but aim to take my medical over the next couple of months, and to do an initial check ride to determine what my training programme is going to look like very soon.
It was joining this forum last year that helped me decide to step back up from Radio Control to 1:1 scale, although my wife is still more in favour of a boat….
Good Luck!
Come on forumites, tell us of your grease-pencil stories. But, do try and keep it clean. 🙂
The Met Officer at Shawbury getting so annoyed with student Pilots/Crewman calling him for an ‘actual’, he came down to the Squadron crewroom, drew a square on the window in Chinagraph, and wrote ‘Actual’ above it and then flounced back whence he came….
Taffy, a compelling account, many thanks and hats off to you!
There is one advertised in loop for £36k, slightly less time, effort and money than building one….
