Or PM the guys who uploaded the vids and they can probably just email the vids to ya or something….
O RLY ?!
You’re going to hell.
But I doubt, like you, that Brazil will suddenly splurge on lots of new fighters. No threat which would justify a big increase in spending, for a start. It’s only the reason for their parsimony I dispute.
I looked at Gripen International’s sales prospect document (from this month) and they anticipate a restart of the fighter competition after the presidential elections. Maybe it’s just wishful thinking or their contacts with Brazil gave them this indication.
The election is in October, with a possible run-off between two candidates
to follow.
Side note: Gripen also raised its overall export prospects (vision) over the next 10-year period to sell 200 new jets starting from today. The production line will also be open longer even as the South African order is filled, due to the order of 31 new C/D jets by the Swedish military. (using some parts from surplus A/B, but with new wings/avionics etc)
I think Rafale still have export opportunities and with experiences from the past, it does usually take a few 5-10 years to get any orders after jets in the native airforce has settled in. I don’t see much of a market in Europe or other western type nations but there’s a lot of countries out there who need upgrades, maybe not 100 jets but 10-20 a pop, countries that might not want/can deal with the US/UK/Sweden and have better ties to France. You know the ones.
π π π I absolutely love the western media . We sure know our stories. (What a newsworthy story this is – wait a few months and another story will suffice that the third one is in final assembly . ) π
Yea.. I understand an announcement of opening up a production line and a first roll-out but this… good lord it must be a slow news day.
Thanks again Jackonicko, great info.
Seems like such a small issue that should be easy to integrate somewhere without ‘losing’ any pylon at all. If they had only thought a little ahead π
Speaking of that, how does the F-22A do this ? Or is it purely a ‘GPS bomber’ ?
How good is Mirage 2000-5 against pak version of F-16? why not try Mirage 2000-5 or a Gripen. cause pak has got Agosta subs from french!! Isnt that a point to ponder?
I think both the PAF and IAF is considering the future better now that they have had past negative experiences with the US and other nations due to export regulations during war-time etc, also shared by China who faced sanctions after the Tiannamen incident.
That they all want to diversify as much as possible and aquire licensing rights and local production when possible. This also smoothens the economic impact of arms spending as the people can find work in the industry.
This document talk a bit about this US-India relationship…
Snippet:

http://www.ipcs.org/ipcs/IPCSPromotingSynergy.pdf
In Aug 1977 India ordered a first batch of 20 Viggen to be used as a deep strike aircraft. In July 1978 the US finally said they would not allow it.
(In 2004 the Swedish Export Arms regulations commitee said no to a Pakistani request to buy 60 JAS 39 Gripen)
Ya. I especeally like Euro thingy. Sure, they presented so great airframes, so superior to both Mig-29 and Sukhoi… And Euro avionic and radars are so much better than these of Mig-29 and Sukhoi… ya-ya.
oh sarcasm. Well,
There has been no recent flight of any new generation prototype jet in Russia.
All the Su-27/30 jets stem from the T-10 project which first flew in May 1977. Not to even mention the mig-29 family with radar images the size of a school bus.
USA, France, Sweden and the Eurofighter consortium have all in recent years rolled out real new generation jets.
Russia officially stated last month they plan to fly a first prototype using a current engine design by 2008. Operational introduction of this mystery jet can clearly not happen before 2018 at the soonest.
Sure it’s unpopular what I say among some people, but this is just the reality.
The current ones work fairly well and in some cases exceeed the performance of western old generation but can not seriously match what is now becoming operational in the US/Europe.
And sure, this mig is nice for airshows that I will say.
Russia need about 20 years of R&D to catch up to the US/Euro aviation industry.
Sorry but it’s a fact. The current sukhois stem out of 1970s design.
Well atleast the European leaders make a conserted effort to do so collectivly , look at the US the 2 leaderships never or rarely on the same side when it comes to export of defence equipment be it clearence for F-35 for UK and other partners or export of B52’s and F-16’s to pakistan .
That’s true.
Ok this news, it would seem that the Saudi Prince over the last year have been very busy in signing new defense deals with European (and also Pakistan) countries. The news doesn’t say he actually ordered anything so I suppose this is a MoU and way to positioning Saudi Arabia in a way that they can more rapidly end procurement processes.
It was a bit overshadowed in the news last year but 1 week before he went to the UK and signed a MoU on Eurofighters he spent some time in Sweden and got a MoU there on deeper defense contacts. Plus a full display of air surveillance products, air command, Gripen jet etc.
So it would seem he got Saudi Arabia set up now: USA, UK, France, Sweden.
What else could he ask for…
The targeting pod will NOT “go on one of the slots usually used by an AMRAAM or METEOR.”
Plans for an option to mount Litening on a stub pylon on station 9 (forward port MRAAM) for FCP on Block 10 (Tranche 2) have been cancelled. It was always going to be on the centreline for Austere A-G – which is for ALL UK Tranche 1 jets.
The Litening 3 pod has been chosen by the RAF and by all three remaining partner nations, and though other pods could theoretically be integrated onto the Eurofighter (“allowing some choice to potential customers”) this would of course be at a cost.
Thanks man. So centreline instead of the fueltank ? It will be interesting to see the first photos of one with a litening.
@ SteveO
You photos actually didn’t show any pods π Except a imaginary pod-like design on the computer designed pic.. which I believe also have bombs that block the landing gear and doors…
Heh Jacques Chirac have personally tried to sell Rafale in the past to other countries too… how many plane manufacturers can hope for that support from a leader?
Well in this business nothing is decided until the jets have been delivered, not even an order can mean it’s a done deal… so anything can happen π
As far as Im aware the the targeting pod will go on one of the slots usually used by an AMRAAM or METEOR.
The Litening pod was chosen by the RAF other models can be integrated onto the Eurofighter allowing some choice to potential customers.
But the Litening 3 probably won’t fit there unless they will make some kind of custom hack. Being designed for a 7 ” diameter missile, if the 16″ L3 would be put up against that area it would need a pylon in between (pylon on integrated pylon I dunno if that can work) Also it would have to come down a bit to not have its sensors blocked by the intakes. I’m a bit puzzled how they will do this.
Also it would seem that Flight Global got their info wrong:
With its 13 hardpoints, Typhoon can simultaneously carry four medium-range and two short-range air-to-air missiles, up to six laser-guided bombs and external fuel tanks, all without compromising the aircraftβs performance characteristics.
The typhoon tranche-2’s that the RAF was supposed to get were instead redirected to the Saudi Arabian Air Force following the conclusion of the deal with the same country.
Now will Israel and Rafale be willing to sell their Litening-3 pods to Saudi Arabia as well ??? Will the Saudis accept Israeli equipment if Israel do approve of the sale ???
Excellent question. I suppose they might buy the Litening pods from either Carl Zeiss Optronics UK (subsidiary of Geman parent company) who supply German and Swedish airforce with pods or Northrop Grumman in the US who acts as a distributor there.
I thought the EF typhoon had an integrated targetting system like the EOTS???
No… EF is solely a air to air jet before 2008. Litening is a step on the way to make it A2G capable with LGB.
Here’s the related news btw:

Farnborough: RAF selects Litening 3 laser designator pod for Eurofighter Typhoons
By Jon Lake in Farnborough
The Eurofighter programme took a major step forward yesterday with agreement to integrate the Litening 3 laser designator pod and Enhanced Paveway II dual mode GPS/laser-guided bomb on UK Royal Air Force’s Typhoons.
From my understanding Greece is to issue two purchase orders for new jets.
One (this one) to replace about 30-40 crashed or outdated jets. (imminent)
And one to add new air superiority fighters (decision 2008)
In the second one even JSF is to compete. Earlier used F-16 jets were under consideration for the first procurement.
What speaks against Eurofighter in the first procurement is the time table to delivery, and this speaks for the Gripen which Saab is being ‘donated’ 40 surplus jets from the Swe Airforce that can be sold and adapted to NATO with the same equipment as installed on Czech and Hungarian NATO Gripen’s.
OR they will forget used jets totally and then it’s a different story again. But again, from my understanding based on news from the many visits by Greek delegations to Sweden in the last 6 months, this order is for a imminent need to replace crashed and really old jets.
