I remember having a good look at that Twinpin when I was there a few years ago. It looked in good nick then but looks even better now so it’s good to know they’re looking after it.

Wasn’t there a ruddy great railway locomotive nearby as well?

    MarkG,

I’m told that there was once a large steam loco alongside the Twinpin. This has now gone.

However, just in front of the aircraft now is a diesel loco and carriage. They are just visible in this other view.

    Laurie.

    Hello all!

I have searched but not found out what is actually fitted to frame five in VP441.

Is it a complete Shackleton package or is it a mix of the original (?) Griffon 88 and a Shackleton CR propeller?

Is the engine itself a hybrid?

    Thanks for Your time,
    Christer

    Christer,

I asked Ezells 3 years ago what engine would be fitted to the completed airframe.

The answer was a Griffon 58 (ex-Shackleton of course) with an original blower. The prop, because it also came from a Shackleton and was oversize, would have to be cut down to 10 ft diameter to allow ground clearance.

As far as I am aware, there are no Griffon 88’s in existance. Anyone know any better?

    Mark,

Great! Many thanks for that. Just got back from a 3 day trip in the south of the country on my other project.

It will be a while before I see the June issue. May’s arrived in the post yesterday!

    Mark & Martin,

    Thanks for posting those.

It seems that some work was carried out on the airframe at Booker. The fuselage has been stripped of paint and the starboard camera port has been faired over. I wondered when that was done. Now have the answer.

I think your date is pretty accurate.

    Mark,

I don’t think video will work on this forum. Haven’t seen any in the past.

Probably you will need to upload to another site and post a link.

    I really want to see this!!:D 😀

    Regards,

    Laurie.

    Mark,

    Many thanks for that thought.

However, I have a subscription to the magazine. Just recently though its been taking upwards of 3 weeks from publication date to reach me.

Anything longer than that and withdrawal symptoms start setting in!!:D 😀 😀

    VP441 History.

FYI, I have just heard from the editor at Flypast. They will run a news item on the first flight that I supplied recently in the next issue to hit the newsstands.

The following month, July issue, they will run a feature article that I have supplied on the historical background of this marvellous aeroplane.

And here am I, still waiting for my copy of the May issue! As the saying goes, all good things come to those who wait!!! 😀

    Steve,

Like you, I’m starting to have the same feelings.

Let’s hope that we are both wrong. As you say, no easy answers to this.

    Lynn,

I can’t believe that it is 46 years since I first became acquainted with VP441.

The guys who find it even harder to believe are those who flew and maintained her when she was with No. 804 Naval Air Squadron in 1948. The photos have evoked a lot of memories for them.

They are over the moon to see this beautiful aircraft back in the air and are in the process of sending some Squadron momentoes to the new owner to show their appreciation for his allowing VP441 to wear her original colours.

    Albert,

Couldn’t agree more with you regarding appearances at Flying Legends, etc. I have already planted the seed on that one!

I would like to ask when did it leave the UK and made its way to Texas? I first saw it in San Marcos, Texas around 1973-74 w/John Stokes and later in San Antonio, Texas w/ Ed Messick.

    Lynn,

VP441 actually left Booker for the USA on April 11, 1975. I don’t have the exact date of arrival in the US, but would be happy to hear from anyone that does.

Just wonderful to see this and many thanks for posting those superb photos! Just very sad that this has happened in Texas, when the Fleet Air Arm Historic Flight should have restored it like this Why did they let it go from Culdrose?

    Albert,

To be fair, when VP441 was at Culdrose during the mid- to late-60’s, it did not belong to the Royal Navy. At that time, it was owned by the Historic Aircraft Preservation Society (HAPS).

HAPS had persuaded the Air Engineering Dept at Culdrose to restore the aerolane to a reasonable static condition for display purposes. They made quite a good job of it.

It is, however, a great pity that more interest was not shown towards the aircraft in the early-70’s, when it was still in the UK.
