FwooooaaaaaaaaarrrrRRRRRR!!!! 🙂
Isnt thatfrom a miles master or something? I remember that from a small group in the 80s I think had it and a replic version of one.
Spot on I would say old boy!
Hadn’t heard about any other raids on Lossie apart from the October 1940 He 111 raid. Perhaps over enthusiastic AA fire?
No, definitely German shells, the origins are not a mystery, just I can’t recall the full details of the specific raid or aircraft.
Saw that.
By the way, Lossiemouth lighthouse got shot up as well. Don’t think He 111s carried cannon though. 7.62mm machine guns?
I’m pretty sure these holes are of ‘cannon’ calibre. IIRC I’d be surprised if a 7.62 would penetrate the plate I saw.
Was there any Ju 88 raids on Lossie, they had cannons didn’t they?
US part number, not sure which airframes.
Is it a part of a turret fire control system?
Can you remember if the war-damaged doors are double skinned or single?
Just wondered if the spent/smashed He-111 rounds might still be inside the doors, if double skinned…
Al,
The holes where visible on the inside of the hanger where the shells had come right through leaving a classic tear.
Any idea what the gauge of the door plating is in this area? I seem to recall it was fairly heavy, which begs the question what sort of caliber weapon was responsible.
Just back from visiting my Father today in Lossie, he reminded me that as well as the bullet/cannon holes, one of the hangars also still had numerous painted gun sighting/calibaration marks on the insides of the doors, covering Spitfires, Seafires etc. I must check with him again tommorrow to see if it’s the same doors, as I am pretty sure I was also shown them a long time ago too.
Anyone recall how such marks would have been used? Were lights shone down the barrels with the tail propped up to set the convergence and elevation etc.?
Any idea which doors? I could make enquiries!
I’m reasonably sure it was the most northerly hangar of the group and the doors facing NE.
The station PR officer made a point of highlighting them to us on a visit, so they should be well known.
They should really chop out the local sections of steel from the doors.
One of those hangars which was used by the Sea King squadron, has cannon holes in the doors from a wartime german raider. I have seen them.
Wonder if anyone will cut it out of the door for the base museum?
Be a shame to lose it.
How much would a hangar that takes the shack cost then? :)125 feet wide 100 feet long and 25 feet high
Try looking at 2nd hand farm buildings, not as expensive as you might think.
Finding a location for it would be the hardest part I would expect.
Part of a wind tunnel test aerofoil? Is that a static port type widget on the underside?
Would be nice to see at the Duxford show. I’ve never heard a DB engine live before….! 🙁
You never heard Black 6????
Blimey, the sounds of a DB will set the hairs on the back of your neck to attention. It’s very very nice, distinctive and interspersed with the odd Merlin, even more thought provoking.
Many many thanks to Russ Snadden and his team once again for that all to brief window of opportunity.
Bizarre doesn’t cover it.
At one time during an ad break in “A ‘plane is born” (another good series by the way) they ran the promo saying it was on “tonight at 9” followed by a list of programmes on “later tonight” which did not include it!
Right hands, left hands and lack of familiarity come to mind.
I do hope the series is as good as the promo or else we are going to be very disapointed. I love that guy’s vocal version of a big radial starting up.
Rod
I’m in Scotland and watched all the 13 episodes in January in about foru days on the net.
I don’t own a TV and shun all the usual reality crap anyway, however this is one series that will grip you and leave you wanting the next series to start asap!
The plane was able to fly exceptionally low and so was able to avoid Nazi air defences.
😀
What again he couldn’t sell it last time.
Might be worth the Coventry boys putting in a ‘sensible’ offer then.
I found this small photo on my old computer and can’t remember the original source……does anybody recognise it or have a larger version?
A PR Spitfire with the large oil tank and lack of armoured canopy.
