As for the Spitfire F.21 -it has serious corrosion in the wings and is missing a number of parts including correct windscreen and rear view mirror. It’s similarily pleasing to the eye but unrestored to any great depth.

David, I take it that this one is kept indoors? How did it escape the gate guardian recovery all those years back?

If nothing else PA474’s current dilemma has served to ensure that a lot of old c0cks in the UK and beyond are currently receiving a lot more close inspection and attention that they might have had otherwise. 😀

    Mig-3 x 2 now flying.

The roll rate of the IL-16 in the old newsreel film was pretty spectacular:eek:

What about the Canadian Lancs, static and airworthy for a lone of one?

Kermit Weeks has a pile of bits incl the ex Strathallan one.

Even a lone of one until a replacement can be sourced would be better than nothing?

Given this is the RAF and not subject to the same CAA criteria as a private venture, what are the possibilities of substituting a modern replacement which is electrically operated as an iterim fix?

Went to the Ex-Mil event at Stafford today

Saw a composition/impregnated fibre/bakelite (call it what you will) seat from a later mark Spitfire (no signal cartridge rack along front) with the adjustable mounting frame and leather back cushion. Some damage to one side of the seat

    I’m confused now.

Isn’t that what’s this thread is about? There was no mention of the expensive bit/s.

    Baz

Isn’t that what the 1st poster quoted, it came with all the expensive bits too.

Facebook, we have considered it but can’t see what else it would offer, most people on the interweb know where to find us!

Over the coming weeks we will have more material for the “Blog” as well as exclusives for Friends via our new Members area 🙂

Is the full fleet going to be back in the air this year?

    Well done that man!!!

Last pic shows a round that didn’t quite make it through the 2nd layer, wonder if the round is still lurking within the door structure? (that’s if there is a floor to it as such)

Any idea if the patched holes are all the same calibre?

As several of the rounds have penetrated down to almost ground level, this would perhaps rule out an accidental own goal by local airfield defenses, especially if the negative depression required of the weapon was not available.

Is this one of the hangars coming down?

    Thanks again.

Some text (same as above post) and photos from ‘Steep Turn to the Stars’ is attached to the inside hangar wall beside the damage, attributing the holes to the Heinkel attack of the 26th October 1940, so the RAF obviously think it was done then…

Are we sure these 111’s didn’t have a cannon?

    http://www.pilotfriend.com/photo_albums/timeline/ww2/Heinkel%20He%20111.htm

The He 111H-2 which became available in the autumn of 1939 had Jumo 211A-3 engines and carried two additional MG 15 machine-guns, one in the nose and one in the ventral gondola, and the He 111H-3 introduced armour protection and armament comprising a 20-mm MG FP cannon and an MG 15 in the ventral gondola, two MG 15s in the nose, one dorsally mounted, and similar weapons in beam positions. The He 111H-4 introduced Jumo 211D-1 engines and was equipped with two external racks to carry a 3,968 lbs (1800 kg) bombload that could include two 1,686 lbs (765 kg) differed only by having increased fuel capacity.

Edit, ahh just noted post #38.

A 20mm cannon ought to be able to make a pretty big hole in 1/2″ plate, even two layers I’d wager.

    [QUOTE=Al;1572914]
StuartH’s theory that the station 20mm Hispano or 40mm Bofors AA was the culprit may not be too far from the truth! I wonder if anyone inside the hangar was hurt?

    /QUOTE]

    Interesting update, thanks.

The story of the origins of these holes is not a mystery or wasn’t a few years back and was explicitly attributed to a raiders fire and not ground fire.

The station liasson office at Lossie should be able to lay his hands on the facts, as you say a HE111 is unlikely to be the culprit, though a Ju88 at at least had a cannon.

You’re right Moggy, Sleap it is. I had an aunt Fanny who lived near there, in Cockshutt. Honestly.

Is that Fanny Grey by any chance?
