For all those of you who have not visited yet, I strongly recommend a visit. A different museum in deed, focusing sensitively on the human aspects that are often missing or disconnected in the more high profile museums. Some excellent displays of recovered airframes, crash recoveries and major assemblies as well as some quite rare engines. The display cabinets of personal effects and histories of those involved and touched, will keep your attention for some time. I’ll certainly visit again when next in the area. A warm welcome and someone on hand to explain and guide, all very nice. You won’t be dissapointed.

    I remember the Spit!

That was fairly recently, well for an old timer like me! Thinking more along the lines of an exhibit that was there through the 70s and up until 96?

    Very impressive indeed thanks.

Anyone remember that there was a similar very faithful metal model in Hendon years ago (not sure if it still is) of the naked fuselage and center section (IIRC)

One of our guys is an extremely keen radio modeller and is in the process of constructing a very large full scale R/C Beufighter.

    😮 Full Scale. 1:1?

Is he looking for a pair of Hercules too?

Joking aside, a certain very friendly ‘Beaufighter’ from Duxford quite often frequents this forum, perhaps he may be able to offer some assistance?

Yes I might have been able to meet Douglas Bader as he popped out of the Stork Hotel

Good, keep the tin triangle on the ground and get enthusiasts money directed towards a variety of more sensible projects rather than one huge vanity project

    Utter twaddle….

Vulcan enthusiasts directed their contributions towards a Vulcan. Why would Vulcan enthusiasts direct their contributions elsewhere? They got exactly what they wanted. Hip hip HOOOORAY!!

The projects business case was to fly a Vulcan for all to see again. It has ticked all those boxes and has been a glorious success in that regard, clearly much to the continued annoyance of the DOOMSTERS. :diablo:

I wonder how many Spitfires (etc) would be flying today without Spitfire enthusiasts, whether voyeurs or owners, directing their contributions towards Spitfires?

Stuart, I’m going to ask Tim to do that. But if anyone else has a chance to check for me, please. There are some disadvantages living in Argentina!

    Hi Mike,

Is the seat and armour common to the Lincoln?

As Peter Verney pointed out, it did go into widespread production on the 100 series Merlin, and it did not increase the power output.
Griffons also used a mixture of carburettor / injection carb / injection pump.

    Pete

Hi Pete, I recall (getting older now….) a RR engineer on a programme long ago, possible Robby Coltranes trains planes and automobiles featuring black 6, who on being asked about the DB601’s multi-point fuel injection efficiency vs the single point on the later Merlins, stated that as it was injected into the eye of the supercharger (Merlin), the increased charge density resulting, was much more efficient than when directed at the inlet, evolving much more power and efficiency as a result?

    Any ideas?

The vast quantities of highly radioactive materials continuing to be emitted and poured into the Pacific Ocean from Fukishima, certainly lend a little welcome perspective on this particular side show.

Yes, the forward bottle handle is where you would expect it to be (if it had been activated).

So. I would hope people will stop speculating…..

    Thanks Tony.

Noting that the picture appears to have been taken once back on her legs again in the hangar, would manually lowering the legs have required to have used this system, or would gravity have been sufficient once on the jacks or crane?

Can any of the experts confirm if the emergency blow down bottle handle has been placed in the actuated position? Handle position appears to be as per placard.

Repcobrab, in future can you make use of the search function as this topic has been discussed at length in the past

Hi Peter, can you imagine walking into a pub, where everyone refuses to engage you in conversation until you have read four manuals of FAQ’s on the shelf first?

Not everyone can be arsed to use, or even understands how to use the somewhat clunky search facilites of typical forums. They are not infallible and it can take a looooooong time to get to the jist of the point you are looking for.

Sometimes a little human contact is nice in life, even if just stating the obvious.

I would suggest a brief factual answer followed by a friendly suggestion to perform a search would be more encouraging if a response is made? If you don’t know, then don’t bother.

With the price of fitting out reenactors like myself in flying gear extremely expensive either for original or replicated WW2 flight gear , firstly you NEED to find money.

Hint….. in 15years of flight gear collecting and i also run a company selling replicated flightgear, i can tell you yes rich collectors will pay but will a heritage flight in a country slashing its defence budget really listen to a wish list and demands and go out and spend money when it cant?

WW2style and type of flightgear is not possibly deemed safe for operational use in 2011. OHS plays into it.

Wearing it around on display maybe less dangerous but you then need to find safe storage for the gear….

Just checking but with the RAF and MOD cutting budgets just to keep head above water or clouds…. were do you propose they find such money for the heritage flightgear?

Mae West LPU can fetch $1600 US
    C helmets size 3/4 $450 +
    E and H oxygen masks $ 300-1200+

Times that basic equipment by x crws and your looking at a fair expense.

As much as i applaud the ideas, i think the RAF has to defend its operational budget firstly.

You missed the point, I’m taking about a similar one off to P7350 photo opp.

I’m sure a representative collection of flightgear could be assembled for such an event if a few kind souls lent it to them. I’d equally be suprised if the MOD hasn’t still got some NOS hidden in a corner somewhere too!!
