An issue with Vulcans seems to be the steel exhaust jetpipes which corrode and then weaken the surrounding structures particularly badly for some reason – worse than on a Victor for instance – I think it must be the specification of the steel used.
The Newark example has one pipe nearly eaten away and despite the best efforts of all concerned will be an ongoing source of concern until/if it gets housed under cover.
Its a few years since my last visit to Newark Air Museum but last time I was their the Vulcan seemed in really good condition considering it is outside at all times. Anyway I will be going for a day out their next Thursday and will post a load of photos in a new thread and I wont even have to get them developed now I have a digital camera.
There was a clear possibility of flying a Concorde on a limited ferry permit if it wasnt carrying passengers.
That is what I was saying earlier the requirements for a ferry permit are very different to the requirement’s for a full permit to fly.
Before it had its wings cut off it was structurally sound and so it was suitable for a ferry flight permit.
Thats how the Sea Vixen got from Swansea to Bournemouth back in 2000 as the type had not been given a permit to fly at the time.
I can’t believe we’re going down this path again. This point has already been raised in the past. There simply was no alternative to transporting G-BOAA because it could not fly. It did not receive the modifications after the Paris crash (such as Kevlar lining to the fuel tanks) and therefore was not airworthy. G-BOAA could not have been flown to East Fortune or anywhere else. End of story. Alternative transportation therefore had to be found and, sadly, this meant cutting the wings off.
Ok so G-BOAA did not get the mods that other Concord’s got but it was certainly kept in an airworthy condition so would it have been possible to apply for a one off ferry flight permit ?
That is one Concord that will definately never fly again as to add insult to injury they CUT the wings off to move her!!!! Looks really rough job – no wonder it is taking so long to put her back together.
Would it not have been easiyer to fly the Concord to East Fortune if nothing else it would save on the costs of putting the thing back together.
straying a bit from subject but… is it true that when vulcan xh558 finishes its new flying career it`s going to duxford. and if so what will happen to the static example already there.
I dread to think what will happen to XJ824 but in any case Brunty or Elvington would be the best 2 places for XH558 not Duxford.
Yes the last D.16 flew to Boscombe down and I have been told it should end up in their museum given time.
Thanks 2 you both for the clarification.
Peter
The intake computers are still classified equipment and were removed by the British Government.
Not sure what else was removed but I know some chemical’s were drained from the aircraft after their last flights.
Unfortunately the people behind this petition have sent very rude e-mails and letters to staff at Airbus and British Airways.
When their was a suggestion that BA wanted 1 example most likely the Filton one to remain in static running condition the idiots went and sent yet more e-mails saying it was not enough and so BA had the Filton example “decommissioned” to try and draw a line under it.
So then what is the youngest Bucc that still exsists ?
Would it be one of the 3 flyer’s at Tunder City ?
Talking of Sea Vixen’s this nose section at the Midland Air Museum looks nice.
They are also restoring a complete example at present.
Damien your new avatar is stunning, as are all your photos keep up the good work 🙂
Exactly, do we here cries of unauthenticity when an ex RAF Chipmunk appears in a civil livery or when the Belfasts were painted in Heavylift colours. No, no we didnt
Yeah and what about the Utterly Butterly’s lets face it their not exactly an authentic representation of the stermens that flew with the US military are they.
But they are class and they do a job and do it well.
Anyway lets see what you all say when the Yellow Sea Hawk fly’s in a couple of years time.
Or if HHA set up their sponsored Hunter display team 🙂
Flying or not, Its outrageous
Well thats your opinion and your entitled to it however I think what would be outrageous if because of a risk of upsetting some people they had refused to accept the sponsorship and then grounded the only flying Sea Vixen due to it costing to much to operate.
XL577 looks amazing and I cant wait to see it flying in fact I might go down to Kemble this Saturday if its gonna be flying.
Hi scott
How are you getting on with your Lightning F3 ?
Have you got the new wings on yet ?
