On the subject of the armament used on British WW2 night bombers would .50’s have made much difference/improvement to their ability to defend themselves?

On a visit to Durnbach i was interested to see that there was at least one American buried there, how commonplace was it for USAAF crew to fly with the RAF post America’s entry in the war?

Could it be Catalina’s with Halifax and or Sunderlands in the 2 nd photo?
