What’s ‘Underworld at War’?
I’ve just read the BBC Peoples War account and it sounds made-up to me; of course I’ve no way of knowing, but what was there to stop people ‘contributing’ anything (true or not) to that BBC project (when it was running)?
Details of the programme here;
and apparently a book here;

To be the devil’s advocate is it likely that a prominant member of the British House of Lords would have lent his name to this if it was purely a fairytale?
damn sad news, another great man has left us.
may he rest in peace.
Hell of a find…must be worth a bit of a look to see what else is down there…where are me wellies?
Have to say that having visited a hell of a lot of war graves and cemetries the work that has been done, and continues to be done by the commision is
2nd to none. there are very few cases where you will find a negleted headstone .
given the technology that is available now i wonder what are the practicalities/problems of investigating the unknowns now? apart from Finance of course…
cant have Mp’s doing without their duck houses after all ! 😡
wouldnt fancy trying that one…after all they wouldnt bite the hand that feeds,but one that appeared out of nowhere holding a rolled up Daily mirror……:eek:
I wonder what would happen if there was a more pro-active attitude to identifying the missing ?

What a terrible tragedy even more so given the event they were on their way to commemorate.
My thoughts and prayers are with the families, friends and colleagues of the deceased.
may he rest in peace.
fantastic photos, fantastic looking aircraft, many thanks for giving us a chance to view !
To be the ” devil’s advocate” here i wonder how dependable is the information given for the date of death?
What were the circumstances around the finding of the pilots remains? Perhaps he was killed a few days previously and his remains not discovered untill the 4th ? or could it be that he was on night operations and killed the evening or night of the 3rd ?
dont get me wrong i find the whole issue of the identification of those who fell and remain unknown very frustrating.I often wonder why more effort is not being put in to trying to i.d them???
I know….finances , finances….doesnt make it right though does it?
Couple of thoughts on various postings above;
With regards to the rules for the US armed forces I was with a 101st Airborne vet while he was visiting the scene of one of his toughest battles where he had lost many friends, he mentioned that he didnt know what had been buried for two of them as there was little or nothing left after a direct hit from an artillery round…
I have also visited many Commonwealth aircrew graves in Europe and there are unfortunately quite a few where you have up to 7 headstones tight against each other as i presume that the remains could not be identified seperately.
Cant say that i approve of the sale of such items unless they are definately to the benefit of the veteran or their family.
Missed the programme on the mystery around the death of Major Mannock last week, is it going to be re-shown some time?
Yep, its a Helldiver and they have found out which one;
hopefully a few more families will get to know what happened to their loved ones.
and she is on the move !
