Nice evocative pics. Dave. In RAF, I did do some odd first line jobs on Argosy’s at FCMPC Valley in Mid -late 1960’s. they would bring in visiting squadrons gear for the weeks annual Fighter Camp missile firing on Aberporth Range, ( Lightnings, etc. ) Known by all as “The Whistling Tit”, a name that suited admirably. And suddenly, like many other types we knew and loved, all gone.

However, a forumite friend on holiday in New Zealand, South Island 2 weeks ago, took these pics. of the remains of what looks like a Safe Air Cargo Argosy that crashed at Woodbourne airfield several years ago and was dragged across to the boundary and into a chaps garden and used as a store. Apparently, the chap now wants rid of it. make a good C/pit section if nothing else. I don’t know its number and wonder if it could be an ex 215 Sqdn. aircraft.——- someone out in forum land must know.

N.Z preservationists ????? Shame if it gets scrapped.

    Found These–All yours.

    Hi Lancman,
had a search through my Small boxes of AGS and found these:-

4 Symmonds nuts, ( 4 BA ) plus some others that are period, Pm me details and I’ll get them over to you.

Notice that there is a Symmonds nut inside that Trapnut, So look for these Folks ,that should yield more.

    ————————————-
Hope these help, While we are here and after reading Grobling About’s account, maybe folks might like to know of my experience:-

I actually bumped into Donald Campbel twice out in Adelaide in 1964, whilst serving in RAF on 4 JSTU ( Blue Steel Trials ). First time was when Donald and whole crew made a visit to us at Edinburgh Field and was given the VIP treatment, I think this was before he did the Record runs in Bluebird on Lake Eyre. The party were shown all around the Hanger and our set-Up and then a presentation was made to Donald of a Flying Suit and a Mk 1 Bone dome, Complete with oxygen mask and Dark Visor. as was used by our pilots at the time. ( This has to be the one he used on his runs and later in UK in the Aquatic Bluebird you guys are making such a great job of restoring ) We were all lined up in the hanger and stood at ease for this as The Civillian Bosses, test Pilots as well as RAF ones were all there. Speeches were made by both sides and it was a historic moment,( more so now.)

A group of My Mates ( Airmen ) at the time went all the way up to Visit The Campbell Team during the record runs, staying there nearly a week, ( If my memory serves me correctly )They asked me to go with them, but I declined as too busy with other interests–:D ( Well I was young then.) They had a great time up there ,helping out where they could and apparently everyone got on well together. I got to see their Slide show afterwards and can still remember the happy looks on everyones faces and our guys getting stuck in to help.

I bumped into Donald later in 1964, after the runs, where he did a triumphant parade, driving BlueBird through the main centre streets of Adelaide as an appreciation of Australia’s help.

Bluebird ran great at just over walking speed right up the main drag, but could not turn the left corner at end to go up side street. With engine still running a load of Police and Aussie Army pushed Bluebird back and he tried again, still no Joy, but then Donald shut the engine down as it was overheating, climbed out and sat on top of BlueBird waiting for her to cool off. This was my chance !! 😀 I dived under the ropes holding crowd back, went right across to Bluebird and shouted “Donald”, very loudly, everyone looked round including Donald, whereupon, I took a photo of him. I then shouted “Thanks Donald” and he waved and said ” OK Welcome”. WOW! Even then I felt really elated,—– I’d spoken to the great man. I ducked back under the barrier and eventually, BlueBird was pushed away to an overnight stay in a local Adelaide vehicle repair garage and that was the last I saw of her and Donald. This has lived with me for over 4 decades now as a unique and very happy event.#

Imagine if I tried to do that today, phew!!! I’d have been locked down on floor by protection people and roughed up, ( If I was lucky )

When Donald was killed in other BlueBird, that gutted me, as it shocked so many other folks too and I knew this was a passing of an Era,I’d been priviliged to have a small part in.

    Phew!!!! Can’t answer that one.

If you run your mind set over all actions, operations, theatres, individual efforts of RAF in WW2, to pick an icon, It’s mind boggling. ranging from Europe right out to Far East and beyond, there were thousands of them.

From Winston down to lower ranks, across to folks who came into WW2 from the Dominions, the whole RAF thing was a built upon a complex pyramid of huge personal “Doing their bit for King and country”.efforts.

Everyone pulled together and are all to be admired, my list of Icons would be bigger than this computer could handle and would stuff up the Web Site, so no vote from me on this one.

    Great Meet. at Newark today.

No wonder I couldn’t find Brucie today, (:D Happy Birthday ).

By the time I got into the AeroJumble after Horse trading outside in Car Park, most attendees were walking away. But after conferring with Air Ministry and Frank Miller, money and books and parts changed hands.( Every one wins–:D:D )

Yes ! that Walrus mainwheel was a surprise to see, looked in good condition too.

Got a lift down with Anon and Terry P. who both enjoyed themselves.

A good short, sharp, intense time and away seemed to be order of the day today. Brilliant.!!!! 🙂

Great to see old friends again.

There’s a big Black Aircraft going over.——-

“There’s a big Black Aircraft going over us, low and slow and lots of engines “
So shouts the wife to me 50 mins. ago.

Stumping down the hallway as fast as i could, ” get out of the way Dog”,
I got out back to see Lancaster PA-474 winging her way over us and past the edge of Mold, heading in direction of RAF Valley at about 1500 ft. With a couple of light Twins in high pursuit.

Marvellous, told all the neighbours, “Only one flying this side of pond” to all the chorus ‘s of “Ooh!! Whats that”.

    Made my day that did.

    Ahhhh !!—Yes- The “Schmittfire”.

Those of us who are desk bound Flight Simmers, can actually Fly this Machine in FS-2002 FS-2004 and CFS3 ” Battle for Europe”. as an Add-On by Heavenly Hangers.Com and it is a free download.

I’ve flown it myself and in on-line CFS3 dogfights and it is a very punchy, fast, lethal piece of Kit, because these folks have put together a”What If” Aeroplane and for CFS3 only it’s Armament is:-

    2x20mm Hispano’s Mk2’s

    4×303 Brownings

    2x13mm MG 131 machine Guns

    1x MG 151 Gun. :D:D:D

The mind boggles, as to how it flys with all that weight in, not to mention ammo, etc, but we are talking “What If” — but the engine power is all there.

The longer Nose and bigger engine means you need to keep busy trimming out everything a lot more than in a normal Spitfire, but it’s OK, landing is very tricky though, but the fire power is “awsome”. The Engine sound is great too and this aircraft is painted up to look really good in German WW2 Colours and markings. I’d also say that this company seem to have got all the characteristics right,as it is a delight to blast around the sky in and what other way would anyone ever get to sample what could have been.

Known as “The Schmittfire”, give it a go folks, you won’t be disappointed. Go to Google, put in Heavenly Hangers .Com and head into their Web Site, In there, go to freeware Archive at bottom of Page and you should hit the Schmittfire Download straight away. Every time I try the link, I’m directed to another Web Site, so this route works fine.

Newark C/pit Fest is what helps lighten us up.

    LOL-PP,
😀 It’s all been said, you can see that. Folks in this Pastime feel under pressure with regulations and as we are gradually inched away from our enjoyment by a pathetic government and ruthless Euro Nanny State Policies, folks frustrations come out over minor things. Nobodys fault really, Just the time and place we live in.

You will enjoy an in-depth look around Newark, in one form or another, but I recommend you visit C/pit Fest next year, especially the Saturday and stay late Saturday Night and meet up with everyone,– Ken Ellis and Fly-Past really put them selves out too,( he threw free beers at me and everyone else at this years Sat. night session,– Great!! ,brilliant !! not to mention the superb Ox/Cow roast they put on.) Museum staff were right there with us Cockpiteers all having a great time as well. Nothing better than Discussing painting “Lusty Lindy” once a few beers have been downed, it all comes right—lol.

So Newark is very alive and well and there is no sign of that stopping–:D:D

    Long may it continue,

Pity You Missed C/pit Fest. PP.

QUOTE=piston power!;1434761]Went to duxford for the weekend had a fantastic 3 days there camping nearby and on the tuesday had to come home up the A1 back to leeds.

Thought id call in at Newark for a rest and a look round, i paid the expensive £6.75 entrance fee and what did i find there but “scrap”!

    ———————————————————-

    Hi PP.

Don’t be so Harsh in your criticism of Newark Air Museum. It’s a pity you didn’t go to this years C/pit Fest, they truly organised a superb event and while doing this each year they are struggling to stay afloat and re-furbish the Aircraft.

Read Twin Otters Thread on what is carried out in this respect, considering all the modern Eurocrap restraints we all have to live under, they deserve medals for keeping the spirit alive. Newark Museum are working hard to save what they have and I think If you Canvassed all Visitors and “Cockpiteers” to the “Fest”, you’d be surprised at the high level of approval and support for what they do.

It’s a pity also you didn’t talk to some of the Museum Staff and Volunteers, very helpful indeed——– open up a bit more to folks PP, you are missing the fun. ( And maybe –the point of it all ). Gracias!! Amigo. :D:D

That Broken Gnat is XP532 -Ex-4 FTS. Valley.

A friend of mine used to break up aircraft and just showed me his photo album so I’ve scanned a few to post on the forum for anyone who may be interested. First up is a Folland Gnat. No serial number unfortunately but I guess you air detectives will come up trumps!
    Ian

    ———————————————————————-

Yes– It’s XP532 allright. What a sad sight, is there anything left of her now ?

Have a look at these Pics. of her and other Gnats doing a big Formation farewell to Anglesey and North Wales in the Summer of 1978.

I was a SNCO Airframes on these at the time at Valley and these pics. taken by a kind person who was probably the Station photographer, were listed at Valley for copies purchase by RAF personnel. The Gnats vanished forever after this as the Hawks were already arriving big time.

    Enjoy folks.
