Mig 31BM, pay attention to this and the previous report.

    OMG, this again!

    http://www.flightglobal.com/news/articles/new-radar-could-boost-rafale39s-export-prospects-318499/

Meanwhile, the Rafale’s ability to shoot down an enemy aircraft using only passive detection was demonstrated for the first time in October, says Chaltiel. Two aircraft flew “several miles apart”, the first using electronic support measures to monitor the target and communicate its track via Link 16 datalink to the second Rafale.

The [B]second aircraft also passively tracked the target using its infrared search and track system

and was able to achieve a lock-on by sending “a few pulses” from its laser rangefinder.[/QUOTE]
    Such a shame that OSF doesn’t offer…

Ever heard about phase shift measurements?

    Everyone’s heard of interferometry.

Is that it? This sentence does not say anything about Captor-E already having these capabilities. It is consistent with the claims from six years ago that these features shall be added later within the upgrade path of the E. How does that put this radar “a generation ahead” of RBE2-AA is beyond me..

Actually it does when taken in the correct context that the Captor-E hasn’t yet been added. The Captor-E is, “providing it a spiralled programme with passive, active and cyberwarfare RF capabilities.”

    in the meanwhile…

    http://www.air-cosmos.com/2014/09/29/25687-futur-radar-multirole-pour-le-rafale

A brand new rafale radar is in the works for its mid life upgrade (2025-2030) with distributed antennas under its skin which will be in charge of detection, EW and datalikns with enhanced LPI and range. And this will also be implemented on the future stealthy combat drone.

Hey lukos, don’t you think your radar is already old fashioned compared to this 😀 ?

Seems like the rafale is always on the next step and others play catch up.

“Launch of studies.” Doesn’t seem too close. Hell, I could make a similar statement and put a similar date on the arrival into service of the Taranis and DEWs. Given the shape, I’d say a conformal array is likely there too. Hell, let’s get all excited about the BAE Replica out being tested on a plinth too.

There is quite alot that’s being said by “sources”. One only needs to think about such a claim and its implications. This one is definitely a mere.

There are obviously some flight conditions where stabilising the aircraft will take precedence, for obvious reasons, but it’s potentially possible heading into a BVR encounter in stable flight. Heh, don’t know.

I’m a bit surprised noone really took notice of this:

Swapping the Stormshadows with fuel tanks and this looks like a solid loadout. Pretty much what the Tornadoes carried in Libya times 2 plus Meteors. Now the question is: just a mockup or really in development ?

Seems to all be included in this new update. Of course the CFTs will be needed to make full use of the Storm Shadow. Interestingly the Storm Shadow MLU is due to introduce a 2-way datalink and anti-ship capability too. Very useful upgrades, concentrate on the upgrades and the bids will win themselves, shame that wasn’t the philosophy from the start.

I have never claimed the RBE2-AA had changed back-end.

Pffft, sure you did, that’s what you now argued about forever and a day.

Still doesn’t say a thing about Captor-E having any more capabilities than RBE2-AA. Both have their upgrade path defined and they are technologically on the same level.

It says it has RF cyberwarfare and both active and passive detection/tracking capabilities, which is more than can be said for RBE2-AA. Aside from that, it has 50% more modules, which itself is good for a 36% increase in detection and targeting range.

I read very good. And another dozen of people here read the same. The only fool reading something else is yourself.

    Go figure.

And? How exactly is that related to our topic?

Your comment wasn’t exactly related either, just something that put you in bad company, e.g. Saddam Hussein.

Of course, they surely spend their time testing new hardware in the least challenging missions possible, just to please you.

Not every test pushes the absolute limit in terms of simulating the greatest imaginable enemy threat. Some training scenarios in the last decade have had fighters mimicking 3rd generation fighter enemies. So in that particular case, you get left with a situation where a mechanically scanned radar, a PESA, an AESA, or even an IRST system ticks the box.

Who told you that I was Rafale man?

It’s plain to see. The immediate belief in the Rafale’s whole electronic stealth BS over in the F-35 thread. I see people willing to believe any Rafale hocus-pocus claim ever made, like the recent BS about the AESA RBE2 having a >100% increase in range over the PESA, putting it on par with an APG-77 based on RBE2 PESA range claims. Yeah, that’s right, the RBE2-AA is apparently 8 times more efficient than an APG-77 relative to its size. Pffft.

The BROACH has two charges a primary shaped charge that penetrates and then a secondary one that goes off. However a BLU-116 is a delayed action charge inside with a heavy metal penetrator, stated to be capable of penetrating 12ft of reinforced concrete or >100ft of earth.

also and ESM sensor alone cannot lock a moving air target ( cant measures range, speed and aspects angle)

It can but it relies on the target being active and usually isn’t accurate enough for BVR targeting, except on stationary ground targets, where range can be readily calculated.

Saab won last time, even though both the Rafale and Typhoon beat them on the air policing scorecard, therefore cost is their main driver, so I don’t see anything changing, the other competitors are simply more than they want to pay. S. Korea did the exact same thing to get more leverage with LM.

    would, should, probably…
Some basic topics are clearly out of reach for you two, yet you still feel the need to argue. So childish !

Do you have details on penetration capabilities for both warhead types, BROACH and BLU-116? Or are you just claiming to know something, when actually you don’t… again?

Regarding the topic, Gripen already won. How credible is the buyer if they restart the entire process every time?

Inviting other participants is simply about giving Switzerland more bartering leverage with Saab, but apart from that it’s a done deal.

If the AESA version of IRBIS-E has a similar improvement in performance, it will out-range most naval radars.

Putting a mathematical slant on this, a 100% improvement in range seems unlikely. Even a 50% increase would require 5 times the transmission power or the ability to discriminate signals one fifth of that previous from noise, at a 100% improvement, those requirements change to 16 times and 1/16th respectively. Is there a source to back that up?

My mistake. Wrong article. See here – Serious Squall

139km for detection of 3m^2 target, 111km for tracking. Does a PESA->AESA upgrade increase outright range or just practical range in an EW environment? I would imagine that the power and detection abilities are similar but the frequency agility gives LPI and jamming immunity.

The figures for the PESA have been discussed before – Rampant Rafale.

A 50% increase would put it at 160km or so. Some sources say the range has been increased by as much 100% (I assume that refers to tracking range). Basically, 150-180km seems to be a reasonable bracket to put it in.

Of course if you’ve heard different, do share. 🙂

The only figure mentioned simply states over 55km for a Mirage 2000.

The formation and tail chase evaluation was initiated by locking up the Mirage 2000 chase aircraft on the RBE2 at over 55km (30nm) and identifying him visually using the FSO TV presented on the right lateral head-down display.

Interesting, it quotes 15t (33,000lb) for the loaded weight.

With a basic empty weight of 10.3t, an internal fuel capacity of 4.7t and a maximum take-off weight of 24.5t, the Rafale can lift 140% of additional load, above its own empty weight, into combat.
