Sounds like the CAA or EASA have finally issued a directive to install ACAS on a/c such as the J31/32.
Certainly wouldn’t be surprised if it took a couple of weeks to incorporate the mod, especially if it wasn’t planned – taking account of spares and manpower availability.
lmao. 😀
What is the probability of surviving a landing/ditching of a commerical airliner on water?
I always thought the chances were very low, however, with technology and development of safer aircraft these days, has the possibility of survival increased?
Because there have been very few airliners having to intentionally ditch onto water, no-one really knows. I have seen figures quoting a survival rate of upto 60%.
Suffice to say, there have been a number of successful ditchings, the DC9 and 767 incidents mentioned previously and not forgetting the succesful ditching of a 737 into a river, due to both engines flaming out, in Asia only a couple of years ago. In the 737 incident everyone survived the inital ditching, but unfortunately one cabin attendant drowned in the river during the evacuation.
This site – http://www.geocities.com/khlim777_my/asditchingissues.htm#Can has some interesting information.
I read an article in another well-known GA magazine.
It is apparently possible to get a gizmo for FS2004 which consists of a sensor for the top of your monitor and a little marker you can fix to a headband, baseball cap, or just glue to your forehead if that takes your fancy.
Moving your head then pans the view out of the cockpit in synch. Turn your head left to look left, turn your head right to look right.
Simple.
Can’t be bothered myself, but if you are a really keen simmer it might be worth investigating?
Moggy
That little ‘gizmo’ works in a number of Fltsims, racing sims etc. Must admit I was dubious when it first came out, but bit the bullet last year and bought one. Takes a couple of mins to get used to it at first, but makes a dramatic difference to any fltsim experience, be it bumbling along in a C172 in FS2004 or in the middle of a mass dogfight in Lock-On.
Its one of the very few fltsim products where the hype has been quite justified. Certainly a lot cheaper than a wrap around visual system…. 😉
The TV news is saying they were an hour into the flight, I take it this means they were conducting a survey at the time ? You can drive between Cumbernauld and the crash site in less than an hour ?
The flight was described as a routine flight between Cumbernauld and Aberdeen…

I believe they were carrying out a pipeline survey, which are carried out on a very regular basis. In the ‘old’ days the crews used to stop off at Longside for a coffee, chat and some fuel. I used to in awe of these guys – one hell of a job thats for sure.
Sadly found out tonight that the pilot was an ex-colleague of my father’s from many moons ago. A superb bloke according to the ‘war’ stories I’ve heard tonight.
RIP gentleman.
G-JAJK is owned by KEEN LEASING (IOM) LTD and G-UMMI is owned by HAVERFORDWEST AIR CHARTER SERVICES are these all part of the same leasing company.
Just wondering and don’t want to start a slanging match or anything as i’m confused as to why they would use two different charter companies.
Might be as simple as lack of crew/aircraft availability with a single operator.
The small yellow items are where the engineers can attach their harnesses, while working on the wing. I understand several aircraft types have similar harness attachment points on their wings.
Does anyone know if these flights operated under BM or Lufthansa flight numbers?
When the 146’s were operating the LH contract, they operated with LH flight numbers. With bmi schedules, they operated with bmi flight numbers.
A225HVY,
Some serious amount of cargo there. Pity I flew back up to ABZ today, so won’t get to see it departing.
Darren
The past few days I’ve been working out of the EMA area and noticed that the cargo door has been open, everytime I’ve been passed the airport. Does anyone know why?
One heck of a beast – pity I didn’t take my camera with me this week.
Nice picture Andy.
I don’t know about that regional, but certainly bmi mainline has a seperate CEO
Wrong…..
There is one CEO for the entire bmi group, but each business unit (bmi, bmibaby and bmi regional) have their own MD (baby and regional) or Chief Operating Officer (bmi).

Nice pics. Have you tried stitching the 2nd & 3rd Canberra pics together ?
Haven’t thought of doing that. May have a try tonight.
Merlin,
The rain was on the Friday.
Damien – I did keep snapping away, despite the rain, as I need all the practise I can get. Surprised my dinky little FZ10 didn’t pack up with the soaking it got, but it kept going.
Skyraider3D – Thanks for the comment on the Red’s pic and suggestion on the purple edges. Got a load of photos with that nasty purple edges – serves me right for using a Raynox convertor. Was trying to find ways to get rid of that.
Damien – thanks for the comment on the Canberra pic.
I did wonder why the ‘pros’ kept their camera’s in their bags for most of the two days, when normally they’d be out shooting pics like there was no tomorrow. Took a while for me to realise that the conditions were less than ideal, especially for ‘action’ pictures.
Anyway I’m still learning this photography lark, so need all the practise I can get.
