Btw, nice long articles about Gripen NG in latest issue of Air&Cosmos.I was interested by the IR band of Skyward G.

There is still no final agreement on how much of the development and production that will take place in Brazil. But according to plan, 80 percent of production and 40 percent of the development will take place in Brazil, according to Amorim.

This is a point that make me dubious : on one hand, Gripen E is advertised as a risk-less mature technology nearly completed, on the other hand, a big share of the dev is proposed to Brazil and Switzerland…

Some interesting news in the 2 latest Air & Cosmos issues :
An export order will allow the use of new engineering technologies such us “carbon filament addition” for the canards.
Second aero campaign (separation tests) for meteor next month. First powered shoot scheduled in jan 2015.

in fact there are more or less not anymore (i think only one) underground airbase in switzeland, and they already operate F/A-18.
Point is they have loads of problems to get spare parts…

Yes, i think that is the alternative, but then work share will be little.
The yanks were politely advised by Swizz not to participate, as it was going to be Euro either way,
in fact that is a quality to tell it straight away

Well Swiss are complaining about spare parts for there FA/18

The fact remains, France has to date produced only a handful of AESA radars, none of which are competitive with the latest US designs.

    .
i know (and i use it sometimes ) the fact that on a forum it is funny to exaggerate, any clue about what you are saying apart from personal opinion? PS Thalès is producing ground/sea AESA for a bunch of time now (including in cooperation with Raytheon btw.)

and if the RBE-2 was always designed to be upgraded to an AESA design, why doesn’t it include the features the more modern US radars do? Why is it -just- a radar while the US has moved on to radars that are so much more?

Because jamming etc. Are dedicated to spectra antennae (remember, the ones GaN made flying this year, if not already done)? Btw there are some nice functions like very low level automatic followground.

Really, France launched development of a “stop gap” radar in 1989 with the intention of replacing its antenna ~25 years later?

A radar since the beginning aimed to evolve to an AESA? Yes.

And we are to believe this, while you take everything we say (with northrop grumman links) about the Apg-81 having removable assemblies and being easy to upgrade with a BUCKET of sale? Hypocrisy ?

Partly , yes (hypocrisy). Aimed to what goal in your opinion?

Spud – Yes, Rover appeared after SDD started.

However, it is now essential (that is, it has been mandatory for CAS in some AORs) for the primary mission of the third largest customer, and has been so since 2008-10. If not added outside the Block process it will not now be available until 2022, seven years after that customer’s alleged IOC and 14 years after its value was recognized.

Clearly, a highly flexible and adaptable system.

. That was my point, i would really love to know if this due to the rigidity of the system or of the program management. And personally i’m really pissed with that rover missing capability (you know why). One of the defects of F-35 i’d sincerely love to see corrected quickly, even if i’m not found of the program.

How is this the F-35, or Northrop Grumman/Lockheed Martin’s fault? Or how does this even remotely relate to the fact that northrop grumman had design goals in mind when they designed the APg-81, and ended up meeting those design goals?

See above. And keep in mind we are on a forum, some sentences are as much made to people react(and think) than anything else. Call it trolling if you wish, but sometimes some US citizens (def not all) need to be trolled (kindly, i have no aggro to any of you)

I would suspect that by 2020 Northrop would have capacity to shift Apg-81 T-R module production over to GaN

In the end that is my question, is APG-81 software architecture able to accept that without extensive change? Aswell as eg cheek arrays. RBE2 can.

In the end non quoted biggest RBE2 issue : not really fully interleaved (incomming on indian version, but not yet uin place). That is a big issue! On the other hand it has qualities : wide angle for a fixed antenna, good range, excellent discrimination etc.

So not having something that was not required or requested negates the ability to be modular?

Try doing a little research on something before coming up with a one-liner.

Fact is it should have been required. But considering program advancement rate, i guess a ROVER2 will be fielded befor Block 3F FOC :). And i dont need to do any research about Rover, i have some knowledge about it. Ask any FAC/JTAC/TACP if it should have been required. The loss of capability is huge for CAS.

The bottom line? The RBE-2 is an upgrade to an existing radar improving range and reliability but is much closer to the The APG-63(V)2 than clean slate designs such as the APG-77, APG-79 and APG-81, which feature a much more complete set of features.

Absolutely not, RBE2 was always designed with AESA front end in mind so AESA is not an upgrade, but a planned evolution. In fact PESA was a stop gap.

sry, but i use a bucket of salt as far as i hear modular and F-35 in a single sentence, see ROVER…

I see Rafale, Eurofighter and Gripen expected ranges to include GaA sets, with GaN coming into EW kits in the future..The same is happening in the US, Tactical fire control radars are using the latest GaA chips while the more expensive and important radars, EW kits such as the AMDR, Future GATOR, Next Generation Jammer are all using the latest GaN Chipsets.

Well, one of the best for buck RBE2AA is a cloud architecture allowing seemingless introduction of future moduels, cheek anteannas etc.

This discussion reminds me of what Thales person said some years ago:

The three best (AESA) radar companies in the world are:

Raytheon and NG; followed by Thales in 3rd position.

I remember Thales CEO saying th opposite.

Whatever, interesting debate, with ppl sending links and data…

BIT, we use to argue, maybe more or less because we are on a forum πŸ™‚
Numbers do not mean higher end (neither the opposite)
NGJ is to be added to planes that do not have an inner equivalent… Like two eurocanards.
More seriously, i tend to velieve more in spectra (and may be Gripen NG EW, we will see) evolutions than NGJ, because since the beginning those where sensed to be fully integrated in the aircraft warfare system. (which has also limitations i emphasized recently in an article about DDM-NG).

    We will see…
