They just published a 3 series article in favour of F35 also. I think if someone writes a nice piece about F18 ASH (or Typhoon), they will publish it also.

A Rafale loaded down with fuel tanks can perhaps out-range an F-35 on internal fuel. Of course the F-35 will receive external tanks as well but we like to ignore inconvenient facts around here.

The Rafale can go faster while totally clean. Care to post some data on how fast it can go while carrying a useful load? [crickets chirping]

Mach 1.6 with two “subsonic” 2*2000L fuel tanks….
Supercruise at Mach 1.4 with 6 AAM missiles (on internal fuel, but thats still much further than a F35 will do on afteburner).Oh and btw F35 is so draggy that its 30% more fuel with tanks only give it 8% more range… It can fly MUCH farther than F35 (1450 Kms range with 6×250 kgs bombs and pod and aams)

HMD was always an option for export, simply french forces didnt want it? Btw tell me, how your hmd will help pilots look back?

It can shoot A2G ammunitions at 90° angle, 6 in a single salvo.

It is not stealthy (although very discreet) true, still it flew unmolested over a S300… Using intelligent active jamming.

F35 WILL need external pod due to the absolute failure of not integrating rover capability. Useless in CAS without POD.
Rafale can sustain 5.5 g turn while heavily loaded with AAMs, two Scalp missiles and 3 2000xL tanks…. How much can do F35 remind me?

Superior in maneuvering? By what measure exactly? Your own expert opinion? The F-35 is a 9-G aircraft, and it has far superior high AoA performance to the Rafale… but we like to ignore inconvenient facts around here don’t we?

Rafale has been fighting duing trials (and before high AoA tests) at 15 Kts during a dogfight. During tests max AoA reached was 100°…(reference in an old Air Fan i cnat find plz help). The fact that FCS limits to 29° is a calculation of manoeuvrability vs lost energy. Rafale, as shown in a recent video , is still manoeuvrant at 30° AoA.
Cleared for 11g in war setting.

For refs wait for next week ottawa citizen

It is transported upside down because that is the way it is mounted to the pole for RCS testing. A crane would hoist the model to its perch atop the pole. The pole is seen at 3:04. The “bean can” atop the pole is a hydraulic rotator which incrementally rotates the model while RCS measurements are taken. The pole also tilts in increments to approximate the look up angles a SAM radar would have of a flying airplane. The radar R/Ts used to conduct the RCS test would be located a few hundred meters off camera to the right. When testing is complete, the testers will have a 3D RCS scan which can be compared to their analytical predictions.

BAE dont have a full scale anaechoic chamber???

The idea of the UK designing its own manned fast jet is appealing but the main problem will be the French not the US in my opinion.

We can’t do it ourselves any more because of the cost, unless we come up with a novel way of funding it, say like spreading the R&D over 2 decades from 1994-2014 perhaps….. 😉

Lets just say we decide with the French that we can produce a UCAV together, there is no way they are going to buy a mainly BAE designed manned jet even if we let them take the lead in avionics and engines. I would suggest they will quite happily update the Rafale to keep Dassault “busy” in the future even if it means the design isn’t as exciting or close to cutting edge.

So where does the UK go after Typhoon (and crazy though it seems that has to be planned for now)? Only a mad fool would share the development with more than one other partner and lets face it what we have seen of nEUROn and Rafale developments, I’m not sure Europe is in the same place as BAE and the rest of the UK LO team….

WTH french are doing in this thread??? And what do you mean about Rafale and nEUROn?

    Official document….

Multifunction Advanced Data Link (MADL) and Cooperative Engagement Capability – Data Distribution System (CEC-DDS) use directional antennas to provide low probability of detection and a high degree of resistance against jamming respectively; however, they are limited in terms of interoperability, configurability, scalability and latency.

I have seen some of the statistics on fighter performances on the F-22A but, one thing I do know is, I saw the first program on the F-22A on the Discovery Network and that program was shown once!! (Damn, I didn’t tape it!) It had a gun camera segment of a F-22 on a Su-27’s six o’clock high position and the Su-27 was maneuvering violently. One could see great deflections of the Su-27’s rudders, stabilators and, ailerons…. yet the F-22A was able to keep the “pipper” on the middle of the Su-27’s fuselage, in what seemed like a leisurely manner! (Now, I have no information on specifics -altitude, speed, etc.) It came on again about six months later and the gun camera footage had been replaced with an animation of the encounter. The “pipper” was all over the place and every few seconds the piper was on the middle fuselage of the Su-27 and the rest of the time spent with the piper was off the Su-27 completely or, on the wings. What was initially shown on the gun camera was very impressive.

Well, we’ve seen that also about a Rafale chasing a F22, but it was a REAL hud video 😉

It is only 33% larger than Rafale

    . Really?

LOL, another dismissive comment from someone who can’t tell the difference between a production array and a simple mockup.

Here are several shots of this same array on aircraft.

The USMC was the prime driver for early CAS in the F-35 and they knew and would rather have the F-35B at IOC than to wait years for Rover. Besides, ROVER was not even around when the F-35 started development. The only thing funny is how the blogosphere is all up in a tither that is does not have ROVER at IOC yet the services have no problem with it.

Services have no problem with it, how do you know? Any idea how a jtac works nowadays? Of what is a 9 line etc? I do, intimately. This is a HUGE problem. F35 wouldn’t be used without another plane possessing a rover link (or without a supplementary pod with rover capabilities) in Afghanistan green zones for ex.

As you can see from my post above, the APG-81 has 1626 modules. Show me a HiRes shot of an uncovered Gripen AESA and I’ll count those for you .

Lol another counting of modules from internet photos, be serious….

    2. What is an A2A “enhanced” IRST? How is it embedded (so is the F-35’s) a second benefit?

An IRST that can see over the plane and not only below?

. The APG-81 has at least 50% more T&R modules yet they are in the same “class”

    Really?

[QUOTE]5. Notice the lack of mentioning the F-35’s voice control (plus satcom, AESA radar datalinks, cooperative EW, MADL supports 25 terminals, etc, etc) that is lacking on Gripen?[QUOTE]

Among these what is lacking on Gripen NG?

    Define UAI please.

ok on the last point. (and only that one)

And they forgot the hilarious lacking rover. Can’t stop laughing since i learned that ;)))

Almost certainly a damned-sight more than an armchair journalist or some “guy” sent to a European conference. Also, I highly doubt the LM engineering team is so obsessed with Gripen as you seem to be.

Having seen a bit of how it works on Rafale, i can tell you that either they are liars or incompetent. OMfg some euro planes are even ablt ot fuse vectorial data sent from jtacs! F35 will certainly be a capable SEAD/AI plane with good self defense capabilities, but too slow for interceptor, too lightly armed for air superirity and unable to perform CAS until Rover is added (which is a bare minimum for modern CAS).

$1.2 billion over 30 years (approx) is $40 mil/yr. Relative to the $60 billion a year budget, its hardly unaffordable. And that the money will be more than recouped through the F-35 program workshare (which will likely shrink if F-35 orders don’t come through from the MoD).

For how many hours of its 6000 hour life will a fighter-bomber engage in combat at all? That doesn’t mean the aircraft’s capability ought to be downgraded. In this case, the F-35 is the safer bet for the next three decades, covering air defence, air superiority, interception in addition to the roles that it will be unsurpassed at – SEAD/DEAD, EW and deep strike. Plus being bankrolled primarily by the US military over a huge build order, its upgrade/support will probably be a lot cheaper too.

Well considering Afghanistan, Lybia etc… Who knows? covering air superirity is irony considering recent Gen Hostage comments?

Btw, they have been doing CAS for DECADES with Rover so that is not a showstopper for CAS

    Post of the month!

A JTAC will simply dismiss your help if you don’t have Rover capability, and ask help from other (capable) plane. No way in modern environment/ROE he’ll give you a 9 Line in these conditions. So, F35 will be implemented in USMC without Rover capability? I didn’t know that and i’m sure they will enjoy. Poor guys…

That score was based on classified information.
