$34B = Biggest Procurement In History As Lockheed, DoD Handshake Deal for 478 F-35s:

The deal for hundreds of new F-35s will drive the cost per airplane below $80 million for the first time.

-WASHINGTON: Pentagon acquisition czar Ellen Lord’s statement says it: “This is a historic milestone for the F-35 Enterprise, and marks the largest procurement in the history of the Department. The $34B agreement for F-35 Low Rate Initial Production Lots 12-14 will see the delivery of 478 F-35 aircraft, 157 for Lot 12, in support of our U.S. Military services, our Partner Nations, and our Foreign Military Sales customers.”

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, the biggest conventional weapons program in history has just set the record for a single deal in, well, probably, any country at any time. For perspective, the entire Australian defense budget for 2019 came in at about $27.52 billion US.

Here are some of the more important details from today’s announcement. Top of the list is the fact that the flyaway price of the F-35A will drop below $80 million one year earlier than planned in Low Rate of Initial Production (LRIP) Lot 13. Lord said in the statement that the Pentagon will reap an estimated 8.8 percent in savings from Lot 11 to Lot 12 for F-35A’s, and an average of 15 percent reduction “across all variants from Lot 11 to Lot 14.”

Under $80 million for the most advanced fighter to ever take the sky… Goodbye rafale, gripen and typhoon market.

    Predictions aren’t realities are they?

No. Why would some someone carry-on with large fins when efficient carriage inside a WB dictates to minimize them? Fins are draggy, bulky and add complexity to your logistics. The less the better when you can rid of them. Is the Mica a super alpha missile? No. Is the Mica a super long range missile that use glide boost better than others? No.

Nope, but mica NG will be dual boost (and a “smart” dual boost, MBDA dixit)

Well,, mica is already by far superior to AIM9 so why not modernize it to maintain its advance? And as by all evidence you have only very partial information about mica ng, i did expect such a comment. FCAS is a multi level program including A330 MRTT and Rafale btw. (and mica NG). And Mica NG will be proressively introduced into forces, with Rafale F4 able to use all its capabilities.

Long and well reasoned article, not sure I agree with some arguments presented or his conclusion, but worth reading.

    Agree.

If yu want a margin or error, good luck with calculating it on so many parts. The only other way would be to weigh exactly all until youget statistically significant data. However, OPIT is not claiming anything new to airmen

Gripen is a good plane. However, if they are canadian built (five eyes) everything they do will be known by US. It is a political choice.

While my current semi-retired status means that my limited knowledge of stealth and counterstealth technologies is no longer as up-to-date as it once was, I would hesitate to claim that “The only thing we know about F-22, F-35 and Su-57 Stealth property, is blatant disinformation.. otherwise known as Marketing ploy” or to dismiss the recent postings in this thread as “nonsense”.

But I would be so bold as to dismiss claimed figures for average RCS as being of little or no practical value, given that one major method of creating a low-observable air vehicle is to not to return reflected radar energy in the direction of the radar that sent it, but to send it in other directions.

    Will you be at PAS19?

i do and will write an article. Do not be disappointed with range, it is quite a clueless notion. However, the longest shot (in perfect condition) done with a MICA in Taiwan was 72 Kms. That said, expect a tripled NEZ for Mica NG due to smart dual boost. please wait a few days for more details. Briefly new captors, more propellant and cheaper both to buy and use.
And do not worry, in A2A RDY2 is quite a potent radar 😉
