BAE and SAAB both offer very advantageous financial packages for the Typhoon and Gripen from their respective government, as well as very good industrial benefits. The F-35 is doubtless the most capable of the bunch, so they have to beat it in something else than just performance.

At least, the process seems intelligent (miçssions to be fielded in RFI instead of number of plaes) and very transparent. Let’s hope it will stay so.

Because Gilmore expressed this concern to Congress in the fall based on reports from the spring of ’16? You don’t suppose that there has been some improvement in software stability in the past six months? Reports from RF suggest there has-

“We flew these jets hard. We flew a ton of missions in Red Flag during those four weeks. I would strongly disagree (with the proposition) that the jets are not ready. We are ready to take these jets on the road whenever we’re asked to,”
““All our mission systems were up every time,” Watkins said, noting that he would often fly his F-16 with one or more of its mission systems down and just have to find work-arounds. “For the F-35 at this Red Flag, every mission system was up every time.”

No because of text of linked article .

Davis says that four jet fusion is still a challenge owing to a shadowing issue that has affected the programme. The phenomenon causes one contact as sensed by multiple F-35s to appear as multiple aircraft.

“We don’t see this as much as we did a year ago,” says Davis. Pilots have learned to stick with formations of four in which the aircraft are fused as two pairs, not as a four-ship. The phenomenon can also be removed by “switching certain sensors on and off.”

µOnce again, this is not vs the plane
, but program management. Holding its breath could be a nice change.

    From the same source:

Sadly it happens also during ground rolling at airbase. You can see this on video. Nothing that a change of catapult settings will do. Even if it will stand there as a minor problem, root analysis should dictate a modification.

Problem is will they take a little time to fix those probs instead of continuing to build on faulty foudations?

I find it telling that even our resident fanboys have given up on calling everyone with first hand experience with the F-35 a liar at this point.

If this report had come out only a year ago we would have had a gaggle of them slapping their keyboards and insisting that everyone involved in the recent exercises must have been bought off by LM.

So basically, fusion is still failing and pilots take it in charge? Hope block 3F R6 will fix it… And we already knew that Marines were strong supports, understandable comparing to what they were flying with…

Airbus just sold its electronic warfare branch

Airbus completes divestment of its Defence Electronics unit to KKR
Amsterdam, 28 February 2017 – Airbus (stock exchange symbol: AIR) has finalised the sale of its
Germany-based Defence Electronics business to KKR, a leading global investment firm, following
the receipt of regulatory and other approvals, including from the German government.
The France-based portion of the business will be transferred to KKR once the carve-out of the
French entity in Elancourt, near Paris, is completed. The closing of this part of the transaction is
subject to regulatory approval from the French government
KKR acquires the business for an enterprise value of approximately € 1.1 billion. Airbus has agreed
to maintain a 25.1% minority stake for a limited number of years post-closing until the full
separation of the sites. This measure will facilitate a smooth transition for employees and business
    stakeholders.
The Defence Electronics activity, which will be renamed Hensoldt, is a global provider of missioncritical
sensors, integrated systems and services for premium defence and security applications.
Headquartered in Ottobrunn, Germany, it has around 4,000 employees worldwide, with annual
revenues of around € 1 billion. etc.

is there any good article that gives the history of the Super Etendard in the various navies it served? The one I’d read a long time ago was this one, which is fairly detailed

It seems like a good, simple aircraft, and being uncomplicated meant it served the role it was designed for, well enough. Not being handicapped like the Sea Harrier, to take off unassisted, and being able to land using arresting cables meant that the payload range deficiencies may not have been as great on this airplane.

    Do you read french? http://air-defense.net/journal/book/la-saga-du-super-etendard

Ok I googled this guy and I didn’t find much useful information.

    Who is he?
I am asuming he is english?
    Whats he doing in France?
Neither France (CATOBAR) or UK (STOVL) are/will utilize STOBAR. China, India and Russia do.
So why is this english (?) guy Peter Ricketts talking about China/India/Russia’s choice of naval fixed-wing operations, while answering a British (?) parliament committee while in France?

    \Dan

He was first advisorfor national security to government in uk from 2010 to 2013 then ambassador in France. As UK ambassador he participated to the livre blanc de la défense there. And sorry i wrote too fast i meant STOVL. it was a purely financial choice dictated by the cost of installing and maintaining catapults.

Shouldn’t it be software only to fix that ?

No idea. Will ask Jean Dupont.
