    DB605 – open heart

the whole thing – the block is aluminium casting, the forged crankshaft weighs about 100 kg (about 220 Lb), 160mm stroke. Oilsupply about 36 litres, dry sump lubrication with three oilpumps. 1.475HP with 1,42ATA manifold pressure (max power) without MW50. The socalled “Volldruckhoehe”, that means the engine is having the similar maximum power with charger (one stage supercharger) as on the gound without charger was reached in 5700meter (18700 ft).

a close look at the piston rods … left and right you can see the bolts were the parts (first picture last post) are attached to

propeller geardrive as already shown …. you can see the “teeth” of the gearwheel are not really “smooth”. They are having unmachined “sharp edges”. Looking at the postwar licence , the teeth are having smooth edges, wonderful craftmanship. The Swedish had enough time and muse after the war to produce the perfect DB605. The engine turns about 2.800 rpm, the prop about 1.600rpm

and the gearbox, seen from front – propeller side – you can see the hollow output shaft. Thats the “place” the MK108 fired through

Dont know the word … its the part to hold the crankshaft in position

In the close up you can see, its not really ultrafine work … its wartime production

    http://www.meiermotors.com/images/pictures/Messerschmitt_Bf109/Messerschmitt_Bf109_Black8/Bf109G-6_Jahr_2015/Bf109_G-6_Hangar_10_Januar_2015/Bf109_Black8_DB605_2015-01-276c.jpg

a deep look inside the powerhouse. Engineblock with crankshaft and all those things. You can also see nonperfect work. In later engines, post war licence, all those parts are polished and you wont see any burr or tiny holes in the metal (really hard to explain)

    DB605 – open heart

Lets begin with the heads and the valves ….. please I am banker and not a engineer. I know all the stories about, but not the technique inside. I know, the DB600er series, and so the 605 is having 4valves per cylinder, fuelinjection, its upside down, its heavy metal, its powerful, bigger then a Merlin, same size than a Griffon and Iin my eyes its a piece of art. As AVI wrote, its a late wartime production, buildt up under unbelievable bad conditions. In fact, in the shop is also a swedish licence build DB605. Comparing those engines, you can see the differences and the are destinctly.

    valves and such things

In looking at the camshaft, does the cam lobe open the exhaust valve, continue rotating, then the intake valve? And, is there 1 rocker arm with 2 rollers that opens both valves? Can’t quite see it. If I’ve got this correct, I can see big advantages, such as lack of complexity, spindle shafts, weight, etc.. Especially compared to the Merlin.

It’s also interesting to see the similarities, but not surprising.

    More pictures, please ! Tom.

Well Tom, more pictures …. no problem, I think I took one million pictures …. its definite aviation-porn and while takink photogrpahs I ruined completly my cravat, cause I came right from the office….. but its best fresh oil from a DB605 ! Man, thats a signature to keep. My wife was not amused …. I really dont understand that. Lipstik on the shirt ruins the mood, best oikl on the cravat ruins the mood …. I am really baffled. Live´s pretty hard ….

well, as you know Mike Nixon is in teh house, and he also took a look at the DB605 of Messerschmitt-project No2. That Mercedes Benz engine is mounted in the “Black 8” belonging to the Hangar 10 collection. Whilest testruns the team was not completely satisfied with the results. So the DB605 was dismantled from the airframe and the Team together with Mike pulled the heads&banks … timer for fantastic insights , well say a glimpse into the open heart

and the fuelinjection system. As you might know, the DB605 is not equipped wth a carburator, the secrets is direct fuelinjection. Complicated ? Yes complicated but ore efficient and more powerful

Mike Nixon / Vintage V12´s enginepartner of MeierMotors in the shop – time for some updates I think

Mike Nixon “is in da house” to help the team installing the Mercedes Benz DB605 restored in his shop to the Fighter Factory Bf109G. What a man, an engine magician. What a knowledge and really a fine guy. Its really a big pleasure to meet Mike and see him working on those engines. Wonderfull experience.

North American P-51D (CA-18) “Flying Dutchman” – new arrival in the shop

look at that 😉 its a new arrival at MeierMotors. The beautiful North American P-51D Mustang “Flying Dutchman” (Commonwealth Aircraft CA-18) arrived at her new base at EDTG Bremgarten Airfield . The fighter is resgistered as N51AB. She´s in a pretty good shape and MeierMotors will do some minor restoration work on her to get her in best shape for the coming season.

Now there are based 4 Mustang in South Germany, a nice gathering I think.

What I was trying to say Peter, is that when the Germans spoke about the 109 they said the one hundred and nine, rather than the one oh nine. Günther Rall springs to mind, he always said the one hundred and nine. But thanks for the additional info, I didn’t know that.

right you are, in Germany we say one-hundred-nine , no one says one-o-nine 😉 we dont say one-nine-o either, its the onehundredninty

    Hi All,
Anybody ever watch Robby Coltraine in his Planes and Automobiles documentary featuring the Supercharger episode, it has a small segment featuring the Spitfire/Merlin and Me109/DB aircraft and the engines, fast forward to 12:16 in the video link. There was a this chap ‘Siegfreid Knoll’ who actively sought the DB engines restoring them etc. what ever happened to him as far as I can recall I have never seen any more about him. Mathias I just wondered if you know about this chap in the video below. Another cracking set of pictures Matthias. :applause:

    Geoff.

Hi Geoff pretty cool video, thanks for sharing …. in fact I love those green Bentley Monsters. Well, die Black6 is fine too 😉

Sigi Knoll is one of the best, handling with those DB605 engines. He is the man who takes care to the DB605 engines of the Messerschmitt-Stiftung (Red7, D-FMBB, Black2) and he was the man who learned those engeneers what an old engine can do. Nobody at that time was able to “understand” the DB605, Sigi did. Without Sigi Knoll, you wont see any real Messerschmitt with DB engine in the air. He was the cutting edge to bring the one-o-nine back into the air. Really one of the big men in the warbird-community.

As you might know, Siggi Knoll was the “father” of the “Red 7” , he was the initiator 1997 to bring that tatterted Buchon to airworthy condition, converted to a Messerschmitt Bf109 G-2. It was on of his lifelime dreams to posess and of course fly a one-o-nine. He made his dream true and flew the Red7 2005 ….. and crashed her while landing. He came to slow and made a typical “greenhorn mistake” and gave too much power. You should not do that with a DB605. Groundloop aircraft nearly dead, pilot okay. End of the lifedream. Yes at the one side tragic, at the other side, a one-o-nine should only be touched by a really perfect pilot who knows how to handle suche a rattlesnake. A one-o-nine is not a plane for beginners and Sigi payed the bill but stayed alive. This one-o-nine was merciful to his pilot…… at that time. The aircraft was not (!) insured and so a once more restoration was impossible. The community association MAC launched a charity appeal to collected money to bring the Red7 back to air and to avert a forced sale to the Messerschmitt Stiftung or other investors. At the end of the day, the charity story failed and the remains were sold to the Messerschmitt-Stiftung (foundation) and they restored the fighter back to flyable conditions. Here and there a shadowy story, nobody knew how much money was donated, nobody knew at which price the remains were sold. The donaters were absolute not amused as MAC unfolded that the “Red7” is sold to Manching. There are/were a lot of rumors but no further details.
