If the UK does have to embark in large scale offensive operations far from its shores then its safe to say that it will be in a coalition operation
So, you are sure there will never be another falklands?
Considering that you live in the neighbourhood, why not simply send them an email and ask them. When it is something innocent they might just be preapred to tell you
Why did the RAF feel the need to issue a statement saying ‘it was a “light-hearted moment” and insisted the crew had not endangered the aircraft.’?
Surely they hadn’t received a complaint from a member of the public who thought holding a piece of paper was dangerous? 😮
because you can be damned sure that one or another miserable bean counting djerk is waiting for just such opportunity to attack the the pilots, the rest of the crew, the groundcrew, the complete RAF and if at all posible, the entire army.
In Air &Cosmos there is an article about the Dubai meeting and that shows an F 22 pick-up by a Rafale OSF. While it is not big deal because all the 6 encouters between the two were WVR, in the article there is a short note (on the lower left). If my French still works, it said that “the planes of the new tranche (59 in total) will be equiped with a new system OSF-IT that abandon the IR channel for a new, improved TV channel”.
Now, why would the French drop the IR channel, if it would worked? Maybe because they realised that it would be better to concentrate on (midranged) TV system? In these conditions, the fact that F 35 IRST is based on a MW system (+TV and laser) instead a LW system would make more sense?
A particular effect can usually be achieved with different technologies. The supporters/investors of a particular technology are cpnstantly improving “their thingy” and are in the lead (hence selected to be put in a machine) until another technology takes over the lead.
This is the case in almost all technology driven areas from motorcycle racing to airplane design
Rafale is the best fighter, the French made the best Eurocanard, it is not only the most beautiful, but also the best in combat agility.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder ;-)))
The funny thing is that the Europeans seem to have, by coincidence and disagrement, developed quite a nice range of fighter planes.
Typhoon: Air superiority
Gripen: F-16 type air space defence
Rafale: Navy, long distance, deep strike
Or would all the political disagreements be nothing more than a smoke curtain to hide a systematic improvement of the military technology?
Would an AIRFIGHT company take a similar position in the military market as AIRBUS is taking currently in the civil market?
Articles have appeared in the media stating that 10 NH-90 Helicopters are to be ordered to support British Special Operation forces at a cost of £100 Million. I have to ask why? Putting the Chinook HC3 debacle aside couldn’t existing platforms be modified for the role, or couldn’t a number of the Chinooks on order be purchased for the role?
It is also stated that the SAS actually wanted the Special Operations variant of the UH-60 which they believe is a more reliable and proven platform.
Germany has put its order for NH-90 on hold because its armed forces claim that it is quite useless and dangerous to be used in any operational circumstances worth that name…
and then UK special forces would use it??? I don’t believe it!
I agree. The poster is misinformed. Even the most basic understanding of projectile ballistics and the components of the lead angle solution would keep one from suggesting such a thing.
For a given range, the considerable differences in muzzle velocity of these two rounds makes it difficult to use one as a firing reference for the other…simply put, when the two projectiles get to the target’s range, they are quite far apart due to the significant difference in gravity drop…one gunsight isn’t going to be able to display a firing solution for both guns at the same time.
waw, this is high level!
Keep it coming please!!!
How is burst length programmed into the GAU-8? I always thought I was in control of burst length.
I dont know how it is with airplanes but…
i have been operating a GEPARD anti aircraft tank back in the 80’s. The thing was equiped with a radar aiming device and there the burst length was programmed determined by the tank based on weather, wind, distance and speed of the target…
I only could push the pedal to start the shooting, the system decided what to do with my order.
If i remember well then minimum burst length was 4 bullets (2 from every barrel), the max burst length was 20
No nation is more dangerous than when the US is actually hurt!
Really, then why did they react the way they reacted to the twin towers?
They even asked “permission” from the UN before retaliating and then they chose to attack first an oponent that had nothing to do with the Twin towerzs in the first place.
Or was the twin towers not bad enough????
All this issue boils down to is that, west has suddenly realised that they can not bomb with impunity any country they choose to.
Already the military option is not looking so feasible, in terms of stopping Iran going nuclear. Its a matter of time only.
The unchallenged global dominance the west took for granted is slipping away fast, hence the window of oppurtunity is shrinking. The only solution would be to agree to a painful compromise.
It is a bit annoying when you have been playing ‘my stick is bigger than yours’ and realise that your stick is not that big anymore.
I estimate that in a not so distant future, the EU, the US and Canada will form a new economical and strategic alliance with fixed exchange rates between their currencies and a slow coordination of their economical and foreign policies. A process similar to the one currently still on-going inside the european Union.
Is this sufficient reason for the occupation and destruction of a country like Iraq.
Of course NOT
Even when flying over Saudi Arabia, you are still talking about a 3000 km trip (one direction). That could be 4 hours to get there, 4 hours to get back home and then a maintenance/rearming/refeuling period.
You are talking about the whole Israeli air force, not a few planes. Leaving the Israeli airspace undefended for 8 hours at least with neighbours like Syria (who will know about it at least 4 hours before your planes are back). That does not seem to be a good plan.
On top of this, Iran also has fighters and pilots, maybe not good enough against the israelis but indeed qualified to destroy the tankers needed to refeul those fighters… and then what? Land in Saudi Arabia with probably a large part of the population choosing the Iranian side against their political leaders??? That does not sound very good either.
But suppose it is succesful, all nuclear facilities are destroyed and all planes happily make it back home. would there not be any nuclear fall-out?? or are we comfortable with images of dying children within dozens of miles around the reactors (ever heard about tsjernobil?).
What about the morning after and the nationalistic outbreak in Iran (and the rest of the arab world). Iran openly and massively supporting the taliban, invading its neighbour Iraq, joining forces with the anti semitic radical forces in Pakistan, stirring up the **** in Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan and Armenia… helping kurdistan to create difficulties in Turkeye (a NATO country)…
NATO demonstrates for 9 years now that it can’t beat a heap of taliban renegades hiding in a country the size of TEXAS (650 000 square kilometers), do you really want to enlarge the war zone with another 1.6 million square kilometers (Iran).
Attacking Iran’s nuclear facilities, it would be stupid but then it would not be the first stupid decision
That, and it’s better shielded from ground FOD during takeoff/landing.
Really, it would seem to make a lot of sense to build high-altitude drones this way.
Drones seem still made by engineers having the “normal” plane as an example.
Predator and global hawk have both a bump where the cockpit used to be. It may well be that this is the most efficient place to put some equipment but I expect that these bumps are there because “the cockpit used to be there and a flying thing just must have a bump there”
I wonder where we end up when drones will be designed starting from a blank canvas. I guess that cockpit like bumps will be gone, as well as vertical tails
Are you saying CAS is obsolete?
Nothing is ever totally outdated, it changes shape.
soldiers are still carrying body armor, use knives, are trained in close combat…
The machine gun in fighters was declared outdated 50 years ago, missiles would do everything…
as long as soldiers operate in a hostile environment they will need and deserve all the protection they can get
I think the DOD is hoping it is obsolete.. not to say it will be when the F-35 comes to the front.
Do people think that the US DOD will need to start thinking of a A-10 replacement for the 2035 time frame to reduce risk?
I think that UAV lovers would get a very nasty surprise if their precious UAV would get confronted with an enemy with something as outdated as WO II flak.
