That eBay Gnat

For those who may be interested, just a few pic’s of XM692’s nearly complete interior repaint in grey. Although the first 6 ‘short nose’ pre-production Gnats were black inside, no period photo’s have come to light and so to ‘blend’ in with all the standard grey painted parts, a tin of grey it is……..:D

Hi All,

Some pictures of the trial fit of the restored centre console.

Just needs fitting of one placard, fabrication of one new rpm knob, painting of fixing heads and new build of a trim drum/handle.

With the exceptions of compass, BA screw fixings and two knobs everything else is original.

Main panel and zigsaw of cockpit main frame are on the bench awaiting work.

Anson Centre Console

Hi All,

Long time since my last update, my L4H cub is slowly coming along. Unfortunatly website support is down at the moment, and I’m too busy working the cub to do anything about it!

Nearly all the bits I possess have been overhauled and I’m only on the look-out for the last few pieces. I’ve managed to collect together most of the wartime items I require to make things stock (including headsets, maps etc).

The panel pictured shows nearly all my instruments, all now overhauled and servicable. To complete I need to fit the Lunkenheimer primer pump (seen at bottom of picture – and can’t be done til the fuel tank is fitted so that the primer clears it). Find a Cabin heat knob (looks exactly like a carb heat knob for a cub), find someone to make me a “solo from rear seat only” placard,and find or make an airpath style Compass card holder.

Then a final spray in shade 41 olive drab (currently zinc chromate finish) and she’ll be all ready to fit.

Shortly assembly of the fuselage will begin so hopefully finances permitting (and of course the day job) work should be fairly quick from now on. So some piccies and the most major items on the wanted hitlist:

Boot Cowl
140 MPH ASI
RCA AVR-20 Receiver
Throttle connect rod
Throttle cable
Carb heat cable
Cabin heat cable and knob
Lunkenheimer fuel shut off valve
Fuel on/off well and cable
A65 Engine mount
Rudder
Control stick link rod
Control stick lower stubs
A7 Ignition switch

To set the record straight though. This seat is being made by a friend of mine who is a metalwizard for KLM. He has forgotten more about metalforming
than I will ever learn:p
I am still learning the easy bits, but getting there.

Progress on G-BXEE (Bixee)

The Enstrom 280C Shark G-BXEE that I have been working on is now almost complete (except for the engine!), and will be on static display at the East Fortune airshow at the end of July.

It now has working NAV/COMM, landing lights, nav lights, and a full set of instruments.

The main rotors are wooden dummies and the tail rotors have been straightened from right-angle bends and repainted.

It is a bit easier to work on compared to the Harrier T2!

Jetstream cockpit

Very impressive work. I know a little about the Jetstream.

My head of engineering at university was Mr Martyn Pressnell. He taught me aerostructres design, but in a former life he was one of the designers at Handley Page and worked on the Jetstream design. The University of Hertfordshire, as it was eventually called, had one of the prototype test airframes, that Mr. Pressnell had personally aquired from HP for £1, I believe. Upon recently visiting the site, it appears to have gone now. Does anyone know what became of it? It was just an airframe, with no systems, trim, controls, or seats fitted.

Jetstream Cockpit

Heres the Jetstream cockpit I refurbished at Dumfries Aviation Museum. It was an empty shell, I reskinned the inside, the seats are original. Every thing else, including the instruments is home made.

Hornet canopy

Sadly no canopy has turned up yet. However, I will make one. It’s just another item on the list! 🙂

Regarding the windscreen assembly. The ‘A’ frame part of it consists of 4 pieces of welded steel. I have the drawing, and its only a case of finishing it. This is next on the list. A company has quoted me to make the laminated glass (all 3 pieces). There are also 3 horrendous aluminium castings that sit on top of the fuselage woodwork. I too have the drawings for these, but they will cause me the greatest headache, as they are not simple sand castings. They will need some thought.

Anyway, thanks for your interest. It’s a pleasure to share my hobby with others.
