As there are several music threads on the go….I see that nice young Matt Bellamy has been given the ‘Guitarist of the Decade’ award by Total Guitar magazine. A worthy winner IMHO, having seen Muse both at Wembley and the O2; got me thinking of the other decades and my own purely personal choices;
1930’s – Robert Johnson
1940’s – Les Paul
1950’s – Jimmy Rogers
1960’s – Who else but the legendary Mr. Hendrix
1970’s – I’m going to bend the rules here and select two; Jimmy Page and I could never leave out the sublime Rory Gallagher
1980’s – Stevie Ray Vaughan
1990’s – Joe Satriani
It’s all a bit bluesy, but then where did it all come from anyway? Let’s hear your choices, fellow musos….

well I would actually pick him as my 80’s favorite as Im not that fond of 80’s music aside few rare expections (thougth I think 2112 is the best thing Rush made IMO and that was in the 70s?)
Brian May migth be another one, simply due my love of Queen music I had in the end of the 80’s (beeing 5 years old or so:D)

Many thanks. I will check these in detail and try to get to one of the gigs. I am so pleased he is “back on the road”. Did you see the TV programme on BBC4? It was a real delight.:)

David Gilmour – my sister once hatched a plan to marry him, simply for the guitar playing and the airy-plane collection.
There are more technically perfect players out there, but no-one with the natural ability to cram emotion into a couple of bent notes as he.. actually, I hate him! 😉
For the more folkily-inclined – Bert Jansch? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RqjUWJtH88c
Makes one guitar sound like several playing off against each other. Hell of a trick to pull off.

Couple more names to throw into the mix…first of all Brendan McCormack, regarded by John Williams as one of the great under-appreciated British guitarists, and also John Lennon’s favourite guitarist. Lovely fella who could do the business in anything from hard rock to classical and had time for anybody:

and then Percy Jones…second only to Jack Bruce when it comes to a fretless bass.

He is due to be playing here in the UK in 2010. I had the pleasure of meeting Peter on a number of occasions in my youth.
