P.C. ?

As a Defence Civil Servant I had to attend scores of compulsory diversity, equality, and health and safety courses, which must have cost the taxpayer many millions of pounds. These courses were invariably hosted by pathetic pen-pushing PC (sorry for the alliteration!) humourless twats, types extremely skilled at avoiding actual productive work.
Over the same decade there were no compulsory work-related courses to actually improve my professional scientific knowledge or managerial skills, which to me summed up the Labour government’s approach to the workplace.
One thing is for sure – in a national emergency, like during a war for instance, all that nonsense would simply disappear…

I think PC although it was/is well intended has become more of a stick to hit people with rather than something sensible, Which is so sad.

We are now at stage where everyone is too worried to upset anybody, Even to the point that putting up Christmas lights or showing the Union Flag or English flag is taken as non PC.

I tend to argree with Tornado64 that is middle class people who create so much fuss on whats not PC and in effect I feel the whole thing as lost touch with the real world.

Its correct that nobody should feel prejusticed against, And racism,Sexism,sectarianism etc should not be tolerated in the modern world.
But things such as freedom of speech and national identity should not be crushed in the rush not to offend.

Unfortunately you can not please everybody all the time, LIke wise its difficult to offend everybody at once, So the PC balancing act goes on.

I tend to think if something I do is going to effect a minority of people not point doing it, Much better to upset the majority of people that way you have really arrived 😀

Although to be fair your example isn’t a great one. You quote a couple of examples from one news channel and don’t watch the other channel.

I agree with John, we have become a Nation of whimps Her Majes Armed Forces are NOT, I would hasten to add, they show stirling service, whilst the rest of us discuss the merits of being Politicaly Correct,and cowering to all the Edicts thrown at us. Can you imagine a squaddie, who has shot a Taliban in the leg and lying on the ground.

Don’t hear the P.C. Brigade shouting to our Polititions, “Get our lads out of there”.

Fine, but many aren’t.
A local radio station has two guys do a humor-based newscast where they take the Micky out of everyone and everything. They frequent have an AP news service report (i.e. not made up and not from a tabloid) about the latest UK laws which show how PC-centric the UK has become. The invariably begin the story with comments along the line of “Here we go again from the UK..” The reports do make the UK look more than a bit mad.
All in good humour mind you. 😀

Here there is a left-wing cable network (MSNBC) and a right-wing cable network (Fox).
The lack of civility is very appearant on MSNBC…one commentator called a conservative female attorney/journalist a “slut” (which got that commentator suspended for a week) while another commentator called a felmae Congresswoman a “Mashed up bag of meat with lipstaick” which did not get that commentator suspended. Another regulary calls allc onservatives “ba*tards”. If you disagree with the current president you’re routinely called a racist by his supporters.
Hardly polite or civil.

Although I don’t watch it, I understand little or none of that kind of talk occurs on the conservative station. Manners atre not handed out along political lines. At least not in the US.

Your story has nothing to do with political correctness. It has to do with health and safety.

well i am a firm believer it is middle class council office and school workers with little if anything to fill thier days ( well not of any importance anyway )

my eyes have realy been oppened again recently ( as if needed )

to how petty british society is about trivial unimportant matters , yet wouldn’t utter a word if someone was getting thier head kicked in in front of them

the general british public have generaly turned into a spineless pathetic nation

can’t say too much but a job needed doing drasticly at work kept getting told ” contractors are paid to do it !!” due dates came and went and it was becoming an issue

push came to shove i went and got the tools and started it , now everyones s**tting it because of health and safetey yet they didn’t give it a thaught about it being an eyesore and dangerous

usualy i find political correctness is thaught up by those who have little to do with it

femminists …. usualy big butch dykes ( about the least femminine thing you can think of

anti fox hunting …. students from citys ..pre protesting the closest they came to the countryside was the centre of thier towns roundabout

etc ..etc..

Basically PC is being polite and non-offensive to others. Is there anything wrong with that? Yes, it could be argued that it has been taken too far but many of the “political correctness gone mad” stories turn out to be urban myths, the Winterval example being one, the Baa Baa White Sheep story being another. There are many more.

If people insist on making the connection of PC and lefties then I can make the connection of right wing and rudeness.

Yes Pete, I know there ar two sets of rules that seem to strangely run paralell to each other in many areas. I agree re the Courts, the Judges, excuse the pun, are a Law unto themselves, I, and this is true, was in the Old Bailey once, awaiting to give evidence, when it was noticed the recorder had dropped off to sleep, the Judge, whilst aware of this fact allowed the trial to carry on. Needless to say, an appeal was lodged and granted. Most judges are into their late 60s or mid 70s, and are totaly out of touch with real life, and what happens in life, real dinosaures, who should have a shelf life to enable them to make sane, and rational decisions whilst still able.
