Two points…

1) This forum is a self-selecting sample and can hardly be held up as a statisically valid cross-section of the UK newspaper-reading public.

2) Who read the muck? Well, it was regularly shifting in excess of 2.5 million copies a week at a time of declining newspaper circulation so clearly quite a lot of people were reading it.

Or looking at the pictures, at least. 😉

It’s just the same as a lot of reality TV – popular low key sensationalistic garbage researched by anti social, unorthodox and often illegal/borderline criminal means.:(

In don’t disagree but to be honest I am far more exercised by the shenanigans in Brussels and their potential affect on us and on our future relationship with the EU, by the energy situation, and by our domestic economic and fiscal situation than I am by the duplicity and immorality of a few disreputable journalists.

Even more depressing is the fact that all of this will probably go quiet for a period and then resume in different ways again.

One of the aspects of all of this which intrigues me is that many of those baying for his blood are the very readers who cannot get enough of the stories published in his “rags”.

I see that as irony heaped upon irony, and some kind of natural justice.
The very kind of hysteria that this media group has engineered and whiped up could be the downfall of some of its group and people.
Did people fall for those huge ‘justice’ campaigns that the NoTW staged, the very ones that they are now being accused of hacking into the victims phones.
Did people seriously think that Murdoch and all those editors and private detectives main wishes were with the grieving families, and not for the huge profits gained from selling these rags?

Jay. re thread 58, why did you feel you had to mention you were a slightly darker shade than pale. We don’t mind what colour you are on this forum. The only requirement is, to have a discussion, and a passionate sence of humour. If I thought you were playing the race card, I would strangle you.;)

I have from my childhood days schooled with, dined with, enjoyed sport and travelled all over the globe with many cultures (long before bl..dy political correctness frowned on Alf Garnet, It Ain’t Half Hot Mum, Monty Python, Noddy & Big Ears, etc – most of my favourites in fact) so I have absolutely no problem amongst friends in e.g. rowing/rugby clubs being told something like “Come on you bl.ck b.st.rd drink up, you’re behind with the rounds” to which I ‘d retort quite regularly “Okay so you w.ite b.gg.rs have hollow legs not my fault”.
That’s me never ashamed of my appearance but sometimes especially up in Scotland it is still something that one as a “brownie” becomes quickly aware of, of being like a ‘specimen in a zoo or glass cage’ ( gawped at ) – with the silent but unsaid expression in their minds “What’s he doing here, another b.oody immigrant” .
To be honest I preferred the pre political correct days e.g. when I first came as a schoolboy to London and would try to get ‘digs’, and some windows would say “No blacks or browns”. Yet others would not have a sign and my English accent does not betray that I may not be white when telephoning to enquire. They would say “Yes sure come round and have a look”. I’d get there and sometimes without even letting me in the door they’d say “Oh sorry it’s gone”.
This went on a few times and I asked a “white” work colleague to help me. I telephoned, he went to the door, and of course they’d show him round, blah de blah “When would you like to move in…..”.
I run round a few seconds later and although my friend had said he wasn’t interested I usually would not get past the door, “It’s gone”.

Each person in their hearts carries all kinds of likes, dislikes, prejudices and legislation does not change this in any form. In fact democracy permits each individual to have preferences including prejudices, what democracy has to draw the line on is when prejudice comes in the way of working relationships (hence essential screening of new recruit against team/s’ composition) or social behaviour (ie victimising, insulting or violence based on race, religion, colour.etc). Likewise most sensible humans are discerning about a choice of partner or who they marry and may exclude some races – that is choice rather than prejudice.

Political correctness has legally suppressed (to often negative consequences) supposed racial prejudice but inside the hearts and minds of racially biased people the hatred has simply magnified. They have no way of expressing their feelings without risking the heavy hand of the law. So instead you have serious “back stabbing” especially in workplaces making the minorities working life almost a living hell.

I do best working in small teams where I am just one of the boys in a team of boys and girls.:cool:

Yet if an aggressor/terrrorist for undemocratic or any reason wants to physically or psychologically harm anyone of any colour that is in my care or vicinity who is being an innocent democratic citizen, then I’d be happy to be the one to press the button/trigger (if carrying that professional authority) to silence such a threat.:mad: Consequences dealt with later in court (military or civil).:rolleyes:

I doubt whether an arch-exponent of market forces like Murdoch Senior (who is a “born-again” Christian, apparently) would permit his media companies to mass-produce the salacious lowest common-denominator tripe that they do unless there was a large enough customer base for it.

In agree that his nationality is irrelevant. I think the Americans will take more interest if and when the allegations are seen to be jmore than that – just allegations.

None of that matters, what Murdoch does ensure runs through his whole empire from the top to the bottom is the drive at all costs, and got by any means, to get salacious stories. It’s the ‘I don’t give a damn about anyones feelings’ attitude which rubs off.

I agree with GA, JBs point about Murdoch being foreign dosen’t make any difference at all to this story or our feelings, in fact given the revelations of allegations of his dirty work in the US (9/11 victims hackings) I’m surprised that there isn’t more of an issue over there.
All the people arrested or held for questioning so far over here have been British citizens anyway.

That’s a good point however I am not sure that it is convincing for two reasons. Firstly I doubt that the amounts of money were large given the multi-billion figures being dealt with on a monthly basis and secondly, as he pointed out, NOTW represented 1% of News Corporation’s business employing 53,000 people globally.

I can appreciate Murdoch may not have known how the reporters were gleaning their information via hacking and phone taps, as President, Chairman or CEO of a large international multi faceted organisation he can’t have his eyes everywhere and would be relying on his Lieutenants to do his bidding for him and to return the goods.

He wouldn’t even be actually signing the majority of cheques, this would be delegated to various bods below him, each with various levels of signing authorisation for procurement purposes, however he should be in receipt of monthly accounts and yearly accounts and should have been asking what large payments were being made and why. Therefore ignorance of the corrupt practices being undertaken by his staff should not be a defence line.

Apart from the hackneyed old Internet debating trick of demanding proof of a negative, I honestly don’t know what you’re chunnering on about here .
