Scrapyard Photos; Any More?

Hi all,

I have spent some time today in the archive of this forum and enjoyed the many threads about scrapyards in the sixties, seventies and eighties. And the photo’s posted (by Mark 12 and 682al, to name but a view) showing Spitfire, Typhoon and Lancaster remains are extremely interesting. Also the photo’s posted by Cestrian were very intriguing.

Any more where that came from?

Cheers

Cees

Those Ballioll seats look familiar, are they the same as Hurricane’s?

Cheers

Cees

Hi Cees

No, these seats are an AGS part that is used in the Prentice, Provost, early Vampires, Hornet, Ballioll, and Firefly to name a few.

They have the same construction using a compressed paper in resin, but are to a different design as to those found in the Hurricane and Spitfire.

G-ADBL

Hi Mark,
I just looked it up. I saw the Scimitar at Coley’s on the 6th August 1958. There was also a Tiger Moth (G-AIHO), 22 Hunters and 74 Harvards.

Hi Mark,
Great photos.
My memory isn’t that good but it looks like the Scimitar photographed at Coley’s. Is that right? Was it 1958 or later?

‘G-ADBL (A W Scimitar)’ what a shame for an unusual type to end up in, any pics?

When I first stumbled on this in 1958 I thought it was a Lysander!

Scrapyards

Mark
Wow- You’re right. Nearly 50 years ago! I think I was a bit hasty suggesting that the Harvard in the background was KF388. I think it was more likely to have been KF343 (P-Q) but it’s still only a guess.
Pagen01- Sorry no pics. Only wish I had. I think I took a piece of it for a souvenir but it’s long gone I’m afraid.

Mark,
Thanks very much for posting that photo. I think I can identify the two fuselages as I made a note of the codes as well as the serial numbers. I think the one in the foreground is Harvard KF435 (G-N) and the one in the background is Harvard (O-J) KF388.
I went there on the 20th March 1960 and these were the other wrecks that I noted at the time. I think they were all Harvards.
FT346 (G-), FX394 (U-E), KF405, KF639 (615 Squadron), KF665 (P-), FX279, KF197 (R-W), FT346 (W-G), KF497, EZ259 (Royal Navy), FS837 (O-), FS881 (X-), KF966 (R-R), KF911 (R-), FX355 (N-J), FX379 (R-), FX366, FX437 (B-), FX442 (SD-B 501 Squadron), KF310, KF322 (Q-), KF343 (P-Q), KF487 (N-T), KF290 (E-M0, KF503, KF990, FX225, and FX258 (F-).
Do you have any more info on the Sandhurst Garage by any chance? IN my diary I have written Sandhurst (D & I) Garage. If you have any more photos I’d love to see them.
In the meantime I’m attaching photos of the fabric from EZ259

Ian,

That is the only shot I have.

I have got a little note that KF405 was derelict at Blackbushe on 25 Feb 1957

…wow that is coming up 50 years ago to the day.

Coley’s Scrapyard

The photograph of G-ALWE was taken on the 1st September 1958 at Coley’s. These were the other wrecks which were there that day:
G-ADBL (A W Scimitar), G-AIHO (Tiger Moth), G-ANCA (Brittania- not sure if I’ve read the registration correctly on this one), 643 (K Z 9 of the Danish Air Force), WW636 (Hunter), RH748 ( P9-E Brigand), RD388 (Beaufighter). I think the following were probably all Harvards: FT310, KF182, FX297, FT145, FE948.
If anybody has any other photos taken at Coley’s in Hanworth/Hounslow I would be very pleased to see them.

G-ALWE

I thought you might like to see a newspaper cutting which relates to the cause of the crash.

Looking back through this thread it makes you sit and wonder what could have been if some of these rarer types had been saved instead of scrapped?

Ah, the benefit of hindsight!

Crash of G-ALWE

G-ALWE crashed 14 March 1957 on the approach to Ringway. It was 5 years old with almost 7000 hours. 20 killed plus 2 killed on ground. Probable cause: broken flap.

From 1956 to 1960 I was quite an avid spotter. Unfortunately I didn’t have a camera that worked but here is a photo one of my friends took of me standing on the remains of Viscount G-ALWE at Coley’s Scrapyard in Hanworth/Hounslow…………Ian

By strange coincidence at a car boot/antique fair a week ago I saw on one stand two large tinplate toys/models (about 14-15″ span). One was of a DC-6 in KLM marks – just like AA’s G-APSA a couple of miles from where I was stood – the other of Viscount G-ALWE (the next in series to ‘LWF at Duxford).
Regrettably the stand was being looked after by a “youth” who had no idea how much they were for sale for 🙁
If G-ALWE was in a scrapyard between 1956 & 1960 it had a very short life – what happened to it?

I also used to go to the Sandhurst Garage in Sandhurst near Camberley who also dealt in scrapped aircraft during that period. They had many Harvards there and I still have a record of the serial numbers. I guess I may have got the name wrong but has anybody any more info on this scrapyard?
Ian

Ian,

Here is a shot from Sandhurst c1958.

Cheers! I don’t have access to our archives at the minute!……

Odd to think that Me109 thinks NEAM is a scrapyard…. some things never change.

The Balliol has no identifying marks other than the fact that it is a T2. All of them belong to the same (very) private owner of Swift WK198. It is heavilly corroded and moving it is not something we will risk doing at this stage without absolute authority of the owner.

Your Balliol is WN516

Firefly

The biggest firefly section is the cockpit of WD889 – engine firewall, pilots compartment and up to the front of the rear crew compartment. The tail of the firefly is of unknown number – obviously VT…

Here are some pictures I took at NEAM earlier this year

Not sure on the identity of the Balliol, shame its outside!

The tail is off a Firefly and the cockpit was indoors and I didn’t have access to it for pics.
