Sea Furies, Sea Hawks etc in colour at Lasham

I promised months ago to post some shots from my visits to scrapyards over the years. Sorry for the delay but due to a bereavement my attention hasn’t been on aviation of late.
Anyway, here goes. I’ll start with 10 colour shots taken in the late sixties and 1970 at Lasham, Staravia yard. This was adjacent to the airfield. Airframes were moved between Staravia yards on occasions and some (the Sea Fury two-seater for example) was once at Church Crookham.
I do have the identities of most of the material but due to volumes it’s not really viable to post that level of detail. The hulks were mostly dumped in rows by type and at various times these included: Sea Furies, Sea Hawks, Sea Venoms, Sabres (RCAF), Hunters, Meterors, Vampire, Canberra, S51, DC-3 etc.! If you want to know more or see more shots then let me know!
Meanwhile over on the airfield Dan-Air were scrapping a variety of airliners including DC-3, Ambassadors, B170 etc. (I have shots of those hulks as well if you want I’ll post those separately). I’ve found my negs of other yards (Failsworth near Manchester etc) but those will have to wait for another day! Those were the days – enjoy!

Is Nigel Spur’s yard in North Scarle, Lincs, still extant and trading ???? :confused:

I went to Skylines yard when it closed and remember well the wings in crates sat at their root ends and they were Chipmunk

Sadly not, I can barely recall the episode at all after all these years.

I will correct my earlier statement, though, by saying the visit was in 1970, not 1968 since I remember every evening being spent in a pub and I was boozing legally!

Probably also explains why I cannot recall the visit to Skylines…

Here’s a quicky that I’ve been meaning to post for a while.

This was taken by me on a trip around the south of England with a couple of other N.A.P.S. members in about 1968.

For the life of me I cannot recall where it was and there aren’t many clues in the photo but I have a feeling it was Skylines at Camberley.

But don’t quote me…

Yep, that looks like Skylines, at least when I was there in about ’76-’78 a T-6/Harvard looking like that was in there (also up against the fence), during my (uninvited) visit there was barely space to move as the yard was packed with Venom/Vampire parts as well, my Dad at one time worked in an office overlooking the yard & said wings standing upright against the fence looked like Hornet wings (he worked on Hornets in the RAF). IIRC the T-6/Harvard has/is beeing restored & W&R said the other parts were moved to Hays when Skylines was sold, any further info on the parts ? especialy the wings ?

Manston Fire Dump 1980

I know there was a fire dump thread in January but I thought they were related – scrap being the link.
Manston was a regular haunt in the school holidays of my youth but without a camera I had to wait. These are more recent (I must be getting old!) being 1980.

By the way anyone ever walked the width of Manston’s runway? It is wide and I got blown over by the blast of an HS125. Oh to be young and stupid again.

What happened regarding the lake windermere(?) sunderland/s rumour from a few years ago(late 1980`s?),was there any truth in it?
I only ask as i never saw any follow up in flypast.

Blackburn B2, G-ACBH

Shot this in August 1975 at Dixon’s Scrapyard, Ramsden Heath, Essex. It had been there since 1947.

I heard someone was restoring it but does anybody know who or where?

Any clue to what happened to the fuselage and wingsections that had suddenly dissapeared?

Thanks for the replies concerning the Tempests. My best(?) guess is that they are MW404 and MW758.

But when Ian Wilkinson was back early yesterday morning to see if he could get any further information on the Tempests, the fuselages and wings have been removed!! See attached photos for what remains, very little. Let us hope they have gone for restoration or storage and not scrapping!!

If the Tempests are scrapped, God forbid, they could have given one each to me and DaveR…..

It is a known shot of upwards of eight Spitfires XVI’s in a pile at Henry Bath and Son’s scrap yard in 1956.

I have a copy of the shot but it is Phil Butler copyright.
