Babe/Babe: Pig in the City

The first film is a children’s classic, an amazing blending of live-action and animatronic animal stars. It is, of course, based on Dick King-Smith’s novel The Sheep-Pig, and is a wonderfully-told story of acceptance and triumph in the face of adversity. It was a massive hit – and I seem to recall it snatching some honours away from some other, high-profile films at the 1995 Oscars. Oh, and for us heavy horse fans there’s a Clydesdale in a starring role!

The second film sees our porcine hero go to the big city in order to help save his beloved owner’s farm, but along the way save some new animal friends from being made homeless. Not as big a hit as the original, partly because it has a much darker tone than the first (a bulldog nearly drowning, for instance). It doesn’t sit as well in my stomach as the first – the storyline and the comic action sequences make it a bigger-budget knock-off of the first.

Still, a decent, sugar-coated evening’s entertainment, anyway!

Cloverfield.
Even thought the reviews were not good,and the filminmg was Blair Witch style(the worst film ever),I thought it was good,excitement was good ,actor’s were belevable and I thought the monster was excellent , you did not see that much of it ,but what you did was good and the little baby one’s excellent.
The ending was left wide open for another one , will look forward to it

My mum was channel-surfing, so we ended up watching it, although something tells me she wasn’t all that keen on the innard-splattering goodness that was on-screen!

Jaws III

The third instalment of the man-eating rubber shark series sees a mammoth, 35ft Great White Shark get stuck in the then-new SeaWorld park in Florida, and create havoc for all inside.

Noteworthy as being one of the few big-budget attempts at a 3-D feature, the film suffers from lacklustre performances and some slightly dodgy effects, most notably towards the end. Despite that, though, Jaws 3 was a success at the time. It’s a reasonable film despite the flaws. What’s annoying is that, in hindsight, some brilliant footage had been shot by the effects team, but creative differences saw most of their footage rejected!

What amazes me is that a shark that size seems totally incapable of chowing down on waterskiers and bumper-boaters that fall, almost literally, into its mouth!! How it got that big when it can’t even catch a few ungainly bathers is anyone’s guess! :rolleyes:

Point Break

Top notch 90s action, helmed by one of the few female directors to actually make a half-decent action flick, Kathryn Bigelow. Pure adrenalin junkie-type stuff, with surfing and skydiving shots galore.

A cult classic, and fantastic fun to boot!

Jaws 2

Slowly making my way through the Jaws boxed set, so naturally the 1978 sequel was next on the list….

Four years after the first Great White Shark Bruced his way through the population of Amity Island, another turns up to spoil the fun of the Long Island summer dinks.

Roy Scheider is back on form as Chief Brody, even more paranoid than before about the threat to the tourists. However, what made the original film so brilliant (the main cast, the non-working shark, John William’s thrilling score) isn’t as prevalent as before. Director Jeannot Szwarc (with whom I share my birthday, strangely enough!) chose to show more of the shark, and this is fine to a point, but one or two errors slip through, making the shark (known as “Brucette”) more fake than its predecessor – notably the scene where the shark is attacking the sailing party mid-way through the film, and the camera is pointed right down the mechanical monster’s throat, revealing the pneumatic innards!

Having said that, Jaws 2 is a worthy follow-up. Flawed, yes, and it was never going to be as big as the first film by a long way (although it was, I believe, 1978’s highest-grossing movie), but it’s still a half-decent thriller/horror.

I watched Atonement the other night, it’s been sitting around on the shelves for a bit, I think it will stay there.
Beautifully filmed, but so slow to start, and so many stupid errors.
My missus usually has a go at me for whingeing at errors, but some of them were so crass, we were trying to find hidden meanings, a read up on IMDB afterwards put paid to that.
When our hero was lying in the bath in 1935 and a Lancaster flew over, she was beside herself, then key dates were all wrong, ridiculously so in the case of the sinking of the Lancastria, Balham tube station was not flooded up to the roof, of the 600 people down there, 65 were killed mainly by falling debris.
The BEF was a regular army, not filled with conscripts or rehabillitated prisoners.
The best one was the black soldier with the London accent in the BEF, what was that all about, political correctness no doubt, I know that many West Indians came over and bravely served with the RAF, as aircrew as well, but surely not in the BEF in 1939-40.
Anyway, apart from that, my mates live near Redcar which was used as the beach scene for Dunkirk, apparently, there are still signs up in French on the seafront and a memorial has been erected to the making of the film there, hope they aren’t embarresed.

Lucas should just move on, man! In fact, he should put some of his considerable earning power into that Tuskegee film he’s been banging on about recently, or some other worthy project that doesn’t involve conflict in a galaxy far, far away… :rolleyes:

Sorry for the “edit” Daz,but I to am getting a little bit miffed over this.The latest news is that all films are gonna be “re-worked” into 3D for full cinema release (would that be 6 or 9 films?).I doubt that the original 3 are up to the quality required for 3D transfer,but I wouldn’t bet that a Special Collectors Edition DVD release isn’t on the agenda,just to milk the cow that little bit more.

The Forbidden Kingdom.
As expected,this is Kung Fu for the television generation.It’s all wire-work and no substance,the set-pieces are SO staged it’s untrue.The pathetic fight at the end,in the US of A,is laughable.
A message for Tony Jaa………”Stop hiding in that jungle and come out and finish Ong Bak 2,just to show these turnips how it’s done in reality.”
