26% from a standing start is pretty respectable. However, it is noticeable that Labour also sank pretty low in a seat they should be targeting, and one which they held relatively recently. Interesting times.

In percentage terms it reflects their showing in the EU elections so hardly a standing start. But it’s probably fair to suggest that although only half the electorate voted every UKIP supporter will have voted so the abstainees are likely to be Tories who believed the result was a foregone conclusion and Labour who knew they hadn’t a hope along with Libs likewise. 10,000 votes is not going to make much difference and Newark was nice and close to the EU election whereas there is a lot of time to lose momentum before next May.

Maybe the good people of Newark just want an EU referendum and are intelligent enough to know the only way they’ll get one?

There should be a recount.

I was just wondering , because doesn’t a party need a certain number of seats to win the majority?

In the event of a very fractured result split between many small parties it is not unknown for there to be a minority government seeking support from others on a bill by bill basis.

This generally results in a pretty moribund government. You can take your own view on whether this is a good or bad thing.

The question is so utterly unlikely but playing along with your game, unless you are suggesting that each of the other candidates received exactly the same votes in which case the election would be rerun, then a majority of one would suffice. And unless the votes were divisible by 6 one of the candidates would have a majority.

Haha I’m totally aware it’d never happen, I was just wondering , because doesn’t a party need a certain number of seats to win the majority? Which is why the torys asked the Lib Dems to form a coalition to make up the seats because there was a hung parliament at the last election?

A Europe united in peace as a democratic group of independent nations? Yes. But not as a group of independent nations owing some sort of allegiance to a bunch of unelected autocrats in Brussels. Absolutely not.

Sadly, I can’t help but think that despite the sacrifices of many lives, we have been dominated by an undemocratic regime from the continent.

Perhaps instead of trying to force the peoples of Europe together, we should celebrate our differences? They make us all unique.

Interesting and i have no idea. I doubt it would happen but it does make for an interesting thought 🙂 I wonder if there is something written ,maybe the Queen qwould have to step in.

Unfortunately or fortunately in 5 years time not alot would’ve changed.Still be 2 main parties lying,fiddling and screwing us all.

What would happen in a circumstance where both Labour and Conservative receive 0 votes, and votes are split almost evenly among 6 or so other parties? There would be no majority so what would happen, assuming no coalitions were proposed?

Thank you for this interesting question. Few know the location of this famed temple dedicated, in part at least, to Mammon. The answer to your interesting question would, normally, be Newark. But, as I’m sure you know things are seldom that easy.

The origins and location of Newark racecourse are obscured by the passage of time and the distortion of legend. Not so much a case of “all will be revealed” as “nothing will be revealed”. In your case as “a seeker after truth” , would you prefer Newark railway station?
